Question of the day

Tuesday, Jun 11, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From a press release…

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick today announced the wager they have made on the outcome of the series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins for professional hockey’s top prize. Under the terms of the wager, the governor of the losing team’s state will volunteer at the food bank of the winning governor’s choice. If the Blackhawks win, Governor Patrick will volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. If the Bruins win, Governor Quinn will volunteer at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

“Governor Patrick is skating on thin ice by betting against the mighty Chicago Blackhawks,” Governor Quinn said. “But the Greater Chicago Food Depository can always use extra help, so after he works a shift there, I’m happy to take Governor Patrick to the United Center to see the Stanley Cup return home.”

“I look forward to seeing the Bruins circle the ice with the Stanley Cup above their heads,” said Governor Patrick. “And I’m delighted to join with Governor Quinn to use the excitement of the playoffs to draw attention to the important issue of food insecurity.”

Even though Illinois Governor Quinn recently honored his friend and Illinois native, Governor Patrick, by naming a Chicago street in his honor, the two men are on opposite sides of the street when it comes to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Chicago Blackhawks have won four Stanley Cup championships, the most recent in 2010. The Boston Bruins have won the Cup six times, most recently in 2011.

* Instead of a question today, let’s just make this a Chicago Blackhawks open thread.

hope Cong. Quigley’s injury does not keep him from getting to a game, or a bar with lots of tvs!

    Bruins in 6.

  6. - Howardtheduck - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:00 pm:

It seems to me that Quinn welched on his last sports bet, sort of like him representing the working families and then changing to a Chicago Civic Club advocate. I don’t bet with welchers and I don’t vote for them either.

===It seems to me that Quinn welched on his last sports bet===

    He paid up.

  8. - David P. Graf - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:07 pm:

Is anyone else bothered by how long the playoffs last in hockey? If they did the same thing in baseball, the world series would start in December. There’s no reason why you couldn’t go with a best of three series in the preliminary rounds and then a best of five series in the finals. The playoffs shouldn’t seem to last as long as the season itself.

  9. - Stones - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:08 pm:

Blackhawks in 6 games. They’ll finish what they started this season.

  10. - siriusly - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:11 pm:

The hockey playoffs don’t last long enough!

Like the Governor, I will go in to this feeling overconfident.

  11. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:12 pm:

I look forward to attending Game 2.

Must defend home ice. and score a power play goal or three.

  12. - Rahm's Middle Finger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:21 pm:

Hawks in 5 games. They look real tough right now.

  13. - RE Porter - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:25 pm:

Governor Patrick, you should know, Governor Quinn has been tardy paying up in the past.

@rrw - I don’t know about those pp goals. I almost wish the hawks could decline them at this point.

Hawks in 6. PQ gets booed at Hawks parade end again.

  16. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:31 pm:

The Hawks are very good but what Boston did to Pittsburgh was unbelievably impressive. The Bruin’s defense is going to create nightmares for the Hawks’ sluggish post-season offense. The Hawks have what, two power play goals during the playoffs? That’s not going to cut it against Boston.

Despite that, I’m all in for the Hawks. It’s going to be very maudlin watching the repeated tributes to the victims of the Marathon bombing, and Boston will get some sympathy nationally. The Hawks need to tune it out, concentrate on their game: puck possession and being aggressive in front of the net.

    Hawks in 7.

  17. - shore - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:32 pm:

deval has a lot of chicago ties and I think grew up in the city. Quinn named a street after him last weekend and I think they are BFF.

The franchise has come a long way over the last 6 years. It’s funny John McDonough spent decades trying to get chicagoans interested in a losing cubs team then he shows up with the blackhawks and presto he’s got a franchise that’s an instant hit.

“Is anyone else bothered by how long the playoffs last in hockey?”

The delayed start to the season really hosed the schedule.

  21. - Cincinnatus - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:39 pm:

    Hawks in 5.

  22. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:39 pm:

I rooted for Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit and Toronto through the play-offs (and Boston as a fail-safe.) The Chicago-Detroit series was Epic (I mean, who couldn’t see Game 7 going into OT?) (But then the Boston-Toronto series was equally epic, especially for Cubs fans.) I think Chicago has the better team, but Boston has been sharp-sharp-sharp. Good looks and razzle-dazzle isn’t going to win it for the Hawks, but that said, Hawks in 7, with at least two games going into OT.

  23. - Joe M - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:39 pm:

Hopefully the sports bars will keep at least one TV set tune into the Cardinals game when the Blackhawks are playing. A couple of years ago at a Springfield downtown sports bar during the hockey playoffs, they had all of their 25 TVs tuned to the Blackhawks game. It took several complaints to the manager before he grumbled and reluctantly switched one set to the Cardinals game. Then at least 7-8 other folks also started watching the Cardinals game.

  24. - BIG R. Ph - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:40 pm:

Good luck to the Hawks from the Chicago Cubs of hockey. Your St. Louis Blues.

We’ll get ‘em next year. (So we have been saying since 1967)

  25. - Roamin' Numeral - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:48 pm:

Seabrook wins it for the Hawks in a Game 7 OT thriller.

  26. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:55 pm:

Joe m.- I think a game in the finals of the NHL involving one of the two “local” teams trumps game 71 of a 162 game regular season MLB game. Just sayin’…

  27. - Chavez-respecting Obamist - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:58 pm:

You know what I don’t like? People who use a slur against the Welsh. Because that’s what to welch or welsh on a bety is.

  28. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:02 pm:

Chavez respecting Obamist- I agree- I thought it was stupid that Cullerton’s legal analyst used the term “welching” in the title of his report about the pension system a couple of years ago (my wife has Welch on her mothers side btw)

  29. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:02 pm:

Hey, Chavez, nobody likes a whiner. That’s a slur against folks from the whine region on the Rhine - amongst the pines, in case you didn’t know. (snark)

I am of Welsh descent and I don’t care.

This is an area gov Quinn may have an edge when I think of him, I think ‘hockey puck’

  32. - I don't want to live in Teabagistan - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:21 pm:

Nobody should make a bet with Dupage Dan. /s

  33. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:30 pm:

This should be an epic battle, two original six teams who I believe never met in the finals. The play that may have topped Kane’s overtime goal against the Kings to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals was Seabrook’s goal in game seven overtime to beat the Red Wings.

I can’t make a prediction, but I won’t be surprised if this goes to game seven.

  34. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:31 pm:

If Quinn likes to bet so much, why not work to get another casino! Good luck Hawks, but hoops is on.

  35. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:32 pm:

Anyone else see a similarity in appearance between Pat Quinn and Gordie Howe?

  36. - Esquire - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:32 pm:

Wouldn’t it be great if Governor Patrick was a real plunger and could gamble on assuming a percentage of the Illinois debt?

    Check this out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqmyekdW2tk

Two of “the Original Six” the Boston Bruins versus the Chicago Blackhawks at the old Boston Garden (from the 1973 film “The Friends of Eddie Coyle”).

Look at some of the players from 1973, in addition to Bobby Orr, Tony Esposito and the late Keith Magnuson of the Blackhawks are in the seen. Magnuson gets clobbered near the net. So many players of that era did not wear helmets!

  37. - flea - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:39 pm:

I knew very little @ hockey, until they paraded the trophy and showcased it at the Illinois State Fair. Been going to ISF for 47 yrs. and never saw folks so excited about an exhibit. Good Luck!

  38. - Dirty Red - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:41 pm:

“That Guvnah Quinn is gunna look mighty retahded,” Gov. Patrick said in response.

Any day you get to dictate a Boston accent on this blog is a good day.

  39. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:43 pm:

Hey, Teabagistan - I have NEVER welshed on a bet. Ever.

  40. - Deep South - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:46 pm:

Its 90 degrees in the Deep South today. Hard to get excited about ice hockey, especially when the Cardinals are threatening to run away with the Central Division crown, the pennant and the World Series. However, I remember the last time the Hawks were in the finals…it was very exciting. I look forward to this series.

  41. - Slick Willy - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 3:41 pm:

*** Anyone else see a similarity in appearance between Pat Quinn and Gordie Howe? ***

Who in their right mind would make such a disparaging comment about Mr. Hockey? He hears about this and you may be spittin’ chicklets…

  42. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 6:23 pm:

Hawks in 7. The Stanley Cup is the most awesome trophy in sports. what a blast when they won it the last time, days and weeks of parties. Kaner is coming on. Toewser just will not take any more of the rough stuff. playoff beards are off the charts weird looking on those two stars! what a finish to the series with LA, the two of them combining to get it past Quick. joyful.

  43. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 6:32 pm:

    Hawks in six.

Like 47, I’m impressed by what the Bruins did against the Penguins, but I think Pittsburgh was gassed and Rask was playing out his tukkus; he didn’t do that all year.

This is a better Hawks team than 2010.

They’re all healthy, Crawford is the goods, there’s a different star every night, and Patrick Kane is no longer the drunky Buffalo high school kid, but he’s still the fastest man on ice in the world.

What’s the over/under on the ludicrous crowd estimate for the Victory Rally in Daley Plaza? Last time, it was four million: one of out four every man/woman/child in the state of Illinois, lol.

  44. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 6:32 pm:

One out of three, excuse me.

  45. - danlinn - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 7:07 pm:

Boston in 5, they’re a much stronger team that plays of good rough game of hockey. The Hawks are run n gun team that hasn’t been very productive in the postseason but has prevailed due to solid goaltending. I’m glad to see an original six showdown and will root for Chicago but don’t think they’ll be bringing the cup home.

Best thing to happen to the Blackhawks was the passing of Bill Wirtz.

  46. - Etown - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 7:31 pm:

    GO HAWKS

  47. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 7:39 pm:

–The Hawks are run n gun team that hasn’t been very productive in the postseason but has prevailed due to solid goaltending.–

Huh? Tell that to the universally-acknowledged best goalie on the planet — who the Hawks sent to the pine in the second period of Game 2 and dropped four on in the closer.

LA. Seriously, a hockey team? They don’t even have a pro football team, now that USC is facing prosecution for crimes against humanity under the RICO Act, Geneva Convention, League of Nations and the Torah.

Did they all learn the game skating on the frozen pond behind the barn in January — in Bel Air?

Do they play beach volleyball in Edmonton?

Bring on Beantown, and park your car in Harvard Yard for some wicked chowder. Original Six, baby!

How cool was it to close out the Wings with three straight, anyway?

  48. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 8:02 pm:

Boston’s lookin’ AWfully good–having one 9 out of their last 10 Playoff games, 5 in a row, and their Goalie allowing only 2 goals against the Penguins, up till then the NHL’s #1-Ranked Offensive Team! The Hawks broke my heart in 1971 in a 7 game series, again in 1973 in a sixer. I’ll vigorously root for this NEW version with 9 guys left from the team who won in 2010, and will pick them out of loyalty in 7 hard-fought games–but reFUSE to be shocked or heart-broken again if they go down to a smokin’ hot Bruins club in 6 or 7 either…!

  49. - just sayin' - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:08 pm:

So actually their wager is over a photo-op.

How about a donation of FOOD to the winner’s food bank of choice?!?

  50. - danlinn - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 11:41 am:

—-Huh? Tell that to the universally-acknowledged best goalie on the planet — who the Hawks sent to the pine in the second period of Game 2 and dropped four on in the closer.—–

Quick fizzled this postseason, Hawks powerplay has been lacking and minus Bickell probably wouldn’t have made it past the Wings.
