Rauner hit, responds

Tuesday, Jun 18, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Republican candidates have begun throwing brickbats at the rich guy

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), who’s not officially in the race yet but will be this summer, says Rauner isn’t really a Republican.

“Bruce Rauner, while running in a Republican primary, has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to (former Chicago) Mayor (Richard M.) Daley, Democrat members of Congress including Jan Schakowsky and Bill Foster, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democrat governors nationwide,” he said.

And

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford, also running for governor, criticized Rauner for making his campaign announcement via a video on his website, Rutherford making the point that he meets the public and the press face-to-face.

* Rauner responded

He added that criticism over campaign contributions to top Democrats must be viewed with a grain of salt. He gave money to four Democrats, two of whom are particularly notable.

“I’ve worked with Rahm Emanuel and Rich Daley because they control the public schools in Chicago and they are powerful allies who you need to work with if you hope to transform the schools,” Rauner said. “It’s the same technique the teachers’ union uses on both parties to block reform. I’m using it back on them.”

Numerous other contributions have been made in his household, but he claimed those come from his wife. He called her a staunch Democrat.

Saying Rauner is contributing to candidates when it’s actually his wife is gonna backfire badly if this keeps up. Just sayin’.

And

Rauner was criticized by fellow candidate Dan Rutherford as the state treasurer faced the media and citizens in a 13-city tour for his own announcement. Rauner decided to announce his campaign via video in order to reach more supporters.

“We’re trying to maximize my exposure as much as possible,” he said. “Launching a video that could be spread throughout the state digitally was hugely powerful. When we launched our two-minute video, we thought we would get 2-3,000 views that first day. We got 40,000.”

And

[Rauner] said the accusations by State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) over his connection to fraudster Stuart Levine is non-existent.

“He’s bringing up some guy named Levine who I’ve never had any interaction with and didn’t even know he was there,” Rauner said. “Somehow my old investment firm is involved in corruption and has something to do with him? It’s pure bologna.”

The connection is indirect: a company that was owned by Rauner’s firm once hired Levine as a consultant, so Rauner did not “employ” Levine.

Dillard has reported raising about $36K this month. Rutherford’s June A-1 reports total about $37K Rauner’s June A-1 reports show $135,500 in contributions.

“Dillard has reported raising about $36K this month. Rutherford’s June A-1 reports total about $37K Rauner’s June A-1 reports show $135,500 in contributions.”

Why is Dillard even pretending to be a candidate? Surely a guy with his connections can do better than $36k. He’s either lazy or just not very good at the political game. Either way, clearly not a strong candidate for governor.

Dillard is criticizing Rauner over campaign contributions to Democrats? What a hypocrite. Didn’t Dillard cut a campaign AD supporting OBAMA?!

  5. - soccermom - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 1:49 pm:

Why is Dillard saying such stupid things? Nobody cares about six degrees of separation from Stuart Levine. Here’s some homework for his staff: Walk down any street in Naperville — let’s make it the river walk — and ask the first 30 people you see if they know who Stuart Levine is. Please report back when you have completed this task. Thanks!

  6. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 1:54 pm:

Given how mediocre Rauner’s rollout has been, you really have to wonder if he’s paying A-Team prices.

    Here’s some free advice:

If Kirk Dillard criticizes you for playing footsie with Democrats, you bring up Dillard’s TV spot for Obama.

    How tough was that?

In case you didn’t know, Obama is not the most popular fella among GOP primary voters.

  7. - JOC - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 1:54 pm:

Is Dillard serious? These accusations from a guy who did a campaign ad for Obama?

Also, I’d bet Kirk Dillard was a lot closer to Bill Cellini than Rauner ever was to Levine… he was Jim Edgar’s chief of staff, if you didn’t know already.

  8. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 1:57 pm:

Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner will find out pretty quick, wishing away, and now focusing on his WIFE … will only lead to what the Payton Prep Clouter did for his denied Daughter.

    “My wife made those donations.”

“Really, so you are bringing in your family for cover. Then how do you explain Clouting your Daughter into Payton Prep, after she was denied and after you ‘moved’ to Chicago to gain residency?”

“I don’t want to bring in family to this campaign.”

“Is your Wife family? You dragged her in.”

    Well, I guess we’re done.”

Yes, Payton Prep Clouter, Bruce Rauner, keep blaming your wife, ignoring the Daughter, and you will be done, but if - AA - gets this contract done, the only people better off are all the consultants, and for ALL of us, we thank you!

The commenters here have come up with more ammo against Rauner than his actual opponents. Rauner is just brushing this weak stuff away like lint off his $5,000 suit.

    - wordslinger -, Make sure you get to - AA - all your 1099 info so once the billing begins…

    - 47th Ward -,

Maybe if the Commenters here charged the right prices, Rauner would take some of this stuff seriously.

I do think its cute that Rauner’s Crew tried to marginalize all these negatives. Heck, I already forgot Rauner Clouted his denied Daughter tthrough Arne Duncan, a Democrat appointee… totally went out of my head.

I think that in one case, he’s probably being excrutiatingly and misleadingly polite…before throwing a really hard punch, which could be foreshadowing of another “parallel” to what I think his overall campaign message might become–and the target is playing right into hands.

OTOH, I believe Rs do, and will care, about the contributions.

  17. - JP - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 2:16 pm:

Rauner *did* get 40K views on his announcement video, but if you look at the analytics (click the little stats icon below the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gG-XN9C-3LA ) and you’ll see that they had almost ZERO views before they paid for promoting the video/buying views as pre-rolls, etc.(First view from ad in the timeline.) How many of those 40K views were bought? Guessing A LOT of them.

  27. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 2:35 pm:

AA, maybe. Levine was a pretty popular fella in GOP circles for a long time. He wrote some powerful checks, early and often.

He wrote to some Democrats, too, of course. The hustlers are great supporters of the two-party system.

“Business is about people and your reputation is built on how you treat people” - Bruce Rauner, Kellogg School quote.

“He synthesized his message in a Nov. 1 Tribune op-ed, indicating “a powerful closed-loop system” with “unions and politicians on the inside, and taxpayers and schoolchildren on the outside.”

    Bruce Rauner, Op-Ed, Chicago Tribune

So, we are “worried” about schoolchildren, like the ones his New Trier school attending Daughter jumped over … and it matters how we TREAT people, even the …’little people’, we clout over?

    - AA -, that is like $175, $200 ala Carte, charging by the sentence, not the total words when we do the “self oppo research” portion.

The big question is who can get enough “free” media to move the Stuart Levine narrative? The fact of the matter is, spending what little money these others have, the impact of targeting weakness needs the biggest return, unless you can have that ongoing narrative propel itslef into a daily dialog.

Time is a plus right now, money is the minus… of the two, time will start dropping, and money needs to rise… other than that…

I get where hitting Dillard on the Obama ad would be satisfying for Rauner, but Dillard won’t be the only one to bring it up. He’s going to have to come up with a response.

Although, highlighting his close relationship with Rahm and Daley wouldn’t be my suggestion.

  48. - Century Club - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 3:21 pm:

My voter file says Rauner pulled a Democratic primary ballot in 2006 (can that be right?). Maybe Edwin Eisendrath promised to bust the teachers union, too?

  49. - siriusly - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 3:23 pm:

Maybe the contributions of his wife aren’t fair game, but I hardly think it wil backfire on Dillard. Put those contributions into the mix with his Payton Prep story, the multiple households where he and Mrs. Rauner are each registered to vote different places and you’ve got a whole lot of little stories that paint a picture of a man who cannot relate to the average GOP primary voter at all.

Little stuff, yes, but in totality I think enough to really wound him in the primary.

  50. - siriusly - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 3:24 pm:

    That is what is confusing me most;

Did Rauner do any Oppo on anyone but Schock? During all this listening, not one of that Brain Trust thought it might be useful to get ready with a pivot on attacks to Dillard, Rutherford, or Brady’s weakness to those same failings, or something stronger to change the discussion.

Major fails by Rauner’s Crew on Candidate Preporation, unless you count, “Well, I guess we’re done” as a …pivot?

He will just run on that agenda, which he thinks will be good for Illinois, and if he doesn’t win he will just go back to his life and I don’t think it will be the end of the world for him.

    Rich @ 3:38, 100% agreed!

    - Biased Observer -,

===mayber rauner just genuinely doesn’t care about what all the insiders criticizing him think?===

Rauner is worried waht the voters will think if this saturates, otherwise, if Rauner didn’t care, Rauner wouldn’t delflect by saying, “well, I guess we’re done.” Rauner is going to have to come up with something better, because maybe not in ads, but in a debate, a “character” question will be raised, and if Rauner looks smug, and “don’t give a darn” or even worse, unresponsive … it could sink him with that being his last image to some voters.

===I don’t think he cares about all this typical insider game.===

“Clouters” care, otherwise, they wouldn’t use Clout, they would accept that their Daughter didn’t make it.

===Politics as an afterthought…a civic coda if you will.===

Unless you spent you whole business life, and with his Daughter, your personal life, gaming the system, working off Clout and inside dealings, marrying that with donations to Democrats as you run as a Republican.

Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is not “Mr. Smith”. His entire persona and life choices run against that thought process …

Let me understand this. Rauner claims on his TV ads that he “can’t be bought”, yet he states he donates money to Democrats as he needs powerful allies to get anything done in the public schools. So he supports buying people off?!?

So he blatantly acknowledges that the purpose of the contributions was to buy access and influence with powerful politicians? This from a guy running as an outsider? Now we know how come his name showed up so often on JC Brizard’s meeting calendar - he bought his way in. And all along I thought it was just Rahm and Brizard’s affinity for charter schools.

Not much seems to change in Illinois, shore–except for “efficacy” of previously-proven models and “approaches,” which is really why some of us even bother paying close attention any more.

  68. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 4:28 pm:

I agree that Rauner’s wife is allowed to have her own political views, contributions, etc. My only question (and I honestly don’t know much about her), is whether she has a source of income. If she has a job and an income of her own then I think her contributions are hers only and shouldn’t be imputed to him. If, however, she doesn’t work and the money is all “his” then I think it’s a little fair to impute the contributions to him.

  69. - Will Caskey - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 4:29 pm:

Learned long ago not to game out the other side’s primaries. Have fun with that, R brethren.

  70. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 4:52 pm:

I take back everything I’ve said regarding “nothing seems to change in Illinois.” I’m sure Mrs. Rauner will be glad to hear that she has your approval, Anon 4:28, regarding the right to have her own political views.

  71. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 5:22 pm:

Shore and Rich are exactly right. None of this stuff is going to mean much as long as they are throwing nickels and he is throwing hundreds. If Dillard keeps up his breakneck pace of fundraising ($36k/month), he’ll have a whopping $324,000 to spend on the entire campaign. As I said above, that’s just not a serious candidacy for governor.

  72. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 5:26 pm:

And…the fun has just beGUN on THIS one (hasn’t it)!!! And all this for a what–3rd, 4th place finish in the end, maybe? Ya just do hate to see folks who HAVE millions just THROW millions out the Window, don’t ya? (Kind of reminds me of a certain PENsion crisis somewhere, too, doesn’t it–Go Illinois–whoo! Cmon all you “Special Sessioneer Lawmakers! PLEASE DO what you were eLECTed for–and FInally come together–now that it’s the only thing on your platter you have to deal with cleaning up–impress us, and PASS SOME decent Pension Reform Law for the good of ALL of our beloved Illinois, WILL ya…(PRETty please, with whip cream and a cherry on top)?!!!

  73. - rumor mill - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 5:29 pm:

Money will certainly be an issue and rumor is that there may be a few 527’s set up that would be a benefit to a non billionaire.

  74. - Steve - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 5:49 pm:

All of this if funny stuff. The Republican party will not be a real party in Illinois until they separate themselves from their senior partners. Why vote for a Republican , in Illinois, when he’s just really a Democrat? Until Republicans offer a choice not an echo: what’s their purpose????

  75. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:03 pm:

and what choice would you suggest? brady not conservative enough for u? profft? give me a break.

  76. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:03 pm:

–The Republican party will not be a real party in Illinois until they separate themselves from their senior partners.–

Who are the “senior partners?” Who are the “real” Republicans?

  77. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:13 pm:

–Dillard has reported raising about $36K this month. Rutherford’s June A-1 reports total about $37K Rauner’s June A-1 reports show $135,500 in contributions.–

Rauner must have received a “Good Housekeeping” Seal of Approval somewhere because his reports show a lot of “homemakers” dropping $5,300 on him. Dude knows how to bundle.

Why are Brady and Dillard so late to the party raising money? They never really stopped running from four years ago.

Brady had $44K at the end of March, Dillard $34K.

    Rutherford had $740K.

  78. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:19 pm:

    - Steve -,

I have no clue where you are going with that… Can you educate us on the “real” or “fake” Republicans… do we get to use “RINO”?

    Usually you have to close about 3 big clients to get to senior partner. Lets have a contest to see who are senoir partners are;

As you all know, when looking for senior partenrs in the GOP, the first prize to senior partner is a Cadillac Eldorado. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you’re a RINO.

  79. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:28 pm:

===Why are Brady and Dillard so late to the party raising money?===

    Agreed, why?

You both knew you were going to run, Dillard might have gotten sideswiped by Rauner, hitting all the CEOs and such, and Brady, what is confusing is the idea of the emails and the posturing, what, you can;t throw a funder of substance to show credibility?

Maybe being one of 19 in the Senate GOP has caught up to the two Senators? How many times can you be seen as irrelevent to the legislative process before they think each individual Senator is irrelevent?

The Senate GOP is a monlithic group, speaking in one voice, and at times, a voice counter to conventional wisdom, political acumen, and always deferring to the “right”. There has to be a smidge of the Irrelevence of the Caucus in the mix, with another pinch of laziness?

  80. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:40 pm:

Great point WIlly. If you can’t influence the process, what is the point of giving money to influence the process. Afterall, we all know why most political money is given by lobbyists and corporations in this state.

  81. - Steve - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:51 pm:

    Oswego Wily:

Real Republicans don’t contribute money to Jan Schakowsky. You know who spends some of her free time with socialist organizations.
    http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/04/who_are_the_socialists_in_amer.html

  82. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 6:53 pm:

    - Steve -,

Ok, so who are the Senior Partners?

BTW, if you are referring to Rauner, just say it.

  83. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 7:00 pm:

@FakeBruceRauner - “Afterall, we all know why most political money is given by lobbyists and corporations in this state.” Couldn’t say it better myself #TheOutsidersInsidersInsidersOutsider

  84. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 7:06 pm:

Steve, you see Bernie Sanders and you see the boogie man, lol?

Would it make you feel better to know that’s he’s from Vermont, which has the loosest gun laws in the country?

Would it make you feel worse to know that he’s from Vermont, the first state to enact gay marriage on their own?

A socialist, eh? Like Tony Blair and Shimon Peres?

God knows you wouldn’t want to have public ownership of any means of production, like, a water supply or power utility.

Or parking meters. Highways. Bridges. Transit systems. Airports. Hospitals. Universities.

They should all be private, for-profit entities.

    Otherwise, it’s socialism.

  85. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 7:50 pm:

    @Steve:

Thanks for telling us what a “real” Republican is. You are what is wrong with the party. People who don’t fit into your neat little definition aren’t “real” Republicans. You don’t get it and that’s why the Republican party remains in the weeds. Purity or else.

  86. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 7:51 pm:

    @Steve:

Oh, and enough with this socialist garbage. You wouldn’t know socialism if it slapped up upside the head.

  87. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 7:56 pm:

I do enjoy the “Slytherin House” Republicans fawning over the Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner.

What is confusing about this group, is that everything the Slytherin House Republicans stand for …and refuse to compromise on for anyone … they ignore and make excuses for Rauner.

In theory, if you can’t vote for Dillard for the Obama thing, how can you support Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner who clouted through a Daley and Obama appointee… and lecture someone like me about …”Purity” and “Ethics”?

Maybe, if the sun …hits the Tin Foil hat just … so …

    Yikes!

  88. - votecounter - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:15 pm:

Rauner is finished! there is no “Conservative” support there (Except Jack-sorry Jack can’t go with you on this). Thats why some are looking/working for another candidate to get in the race. shhhh don’t tell anyone. BTW Dillard announced over the weekend according to the IR. If a man announces in the woods and there is noone there to hear it does he make any noise?

  89. - votecounter - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:19 pm:

    Demorilized
I know a socialist when it’s Jan Creamer/Schakowsky and she/he admit she and her husband are. He’s out of prison so I can talk about him again can’t I?

  90. - Steve - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:32 pm:

    Demoralized:

Why are you insulting America’s largest socialist organization? The Democratic Socialists of America want to get rid of the profit motive. Many Democrat party members like Jan Schakowsky think it’s alright for the government to own banks, insurance companies ,and car companies. Karl Marx, himself, defined socialism as owning the means of production. So, it’s ok to face the truth.
    http://www.dsausa.org/

  91. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:37 pm:

Steve, you like labels. What do you call Gov. Perry who offers up taxpayer money to companies to move to Texas? A socialist entrepreneur?

Or is a socialist chump for not getting an ownership stake with the people’s money?

  92. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:39 pm:

=I do enjoy the “Slytherin House” Republicans fawning over the Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner…they ignore and make excuses for Rauner.=

There must be one of four things going on here: 1) I still don’t understand what the heck “Slyterin House” means within the GOP context (nor do I care); 2) If those making excuses are in fact GOPers, I don’t recognize them; 3) whatever excuses are being offered must not be very good as you seem to be the only one upset over them; or 4) you see “Slyterin House” Republicans everywhere you go “virtually.”

  93. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:46 pm:

=2) If those making excuses are in fact GOPers, I don’t recognize them; =

And just to clarify before someone jumps all over me. “Recognize” as in “identify”–not as in I do not believe they are “real” Republicans. And apologies if I SHOULD know that whoever is defending Rauner on this thread is a GOPer; I guess the pro arguments (at this time) truly weren’t strong enough for me to stop and analyze them to that extent. (But I also realize that this is only a “warm up” and that the debate will only become more intriguing.)

  94. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 8:53 pm:

    1) If you don’t care, why ask? Hit the “search” key, if you are getting confused.

2 & 3) If you don’t call them out, like Rauner Clouting his daughter, and that by doing so, is running an unethical, hypocritical campaign based on a lack of moral character, as Rauner calls out Republicans, while working with Democrats to game the system, that is on you. If you can’t recognize who Rauner is pandering to, that is also on you. If you think I am the only one upset and responding, then why all the flack that I get when I bring up the Clouting for the Denied daughter?

    4) Are you keeping track of every post I make? that sounds a bit obsessive. Are you following me, since I say it everywhere I go and you know this? Yikes.

If you don’t care, don’t ask, otherwise that is Troll behavior and bad form.

  95. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 9:05 pm:

Willy, someday you’ll learn that your “telemarketing” techniques of repeating while slightly turning around everything I say is actually the obsessive, impolite, and ineffective behavior.

    Along with calling people names.

  96. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 9:13 pm:

And now, on Cue mind you, plays the victim “card”.

At least - Anonymous - is consistent, including still refusing to come up with a handle, because NOT having one reminds is all - Anonymous - was a victim of some sort of name thing, but a victim none the less.

Poking bears is unpredictable, but thank goodness -Anonymous - is predictable as the sun rising I’m the east.

When you are done laying those cards, and get a handle, then we will get somewhere I guess

  97. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 9:26 pm:

I’m sure you’re right, Willy. You ARE “the east.”

@Steve, you’re a moron (sorry - was that ad hominem). I suppose I could leave it at that, but as an active member of the party you attack, and as a job-creator myself, I just can’t stress enough what a clueless troll you actually are. How many jobs have you created Steveo? Yup, thought so.

  102. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 18, 13 @ 10:17 pm:

Oh, and “Rauner’s wife” is actually a very accomplished woman in her own right and currently president of the Ounce of Prevention fund, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to expanding early childhood education.
