Question of the day
Thursday, Jul 25, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * According to a friend of mine, this t-shirt is popping up in New York City, where Christine Quinn is running for mayor… Let’s repurpose it for our own use. * The Question: Agree or disagree: Anybody but Pat Quinn? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please. survey services

- Deep South - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:18 am:
“Anybody” won’t be on the ballot.
- South of I-80 - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:20 am:
You can not govern by press conferences and opinion polls!
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:20 am:
Had this conversation with a friend yesterday. With Pat Quinn you know what you’ve got, and I generally prefer the devil I know.
Pat Quinn is like having a stomach ache but knowing that it’s Crohn’s disease and not colon cancer. It still hurts, but it isn’t going to kill you.
- Wumpus - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:21 am:
How about a lot of people but Quinn. I am somewhat distrated by the skyscrapers.
- Earnest - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:22 am:
Can’t commit to non-Quinn without knowing the other options.
- Soccermom - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:23 am:
I have three words for you: Scott Lee Cohen.
- Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:25 am:
No, not anybody. That kind of attitude gets you “Senor Carlos Danger, Mayor.”
- BMAN - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:28 am:
I wish we had a system that allowed for a no-confidence vote. Quinn would definately receive a no-confidence vote from me.
- Roadiepig - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:30 am:
Could you change the poll to “anybody but these usual suspects that are presently running”?
- Skeptic - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:31 am:
Soccermom and Ron B. said what I had to say (although I was going to say “Joe Walsh” and “Jason Plummer” and “Alan Keyes.”)
- Anon - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:31 am:
Lifelong dem here.
I’d say “Anybody but Quinn… except for a Bill Brady style conservative.”
- In the know - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:32 am:
as a member of the GOP, I won’t get to vote or Daley, and I’d vote for any GOP candidate BUT Rauner. So ALMOST anybody but Quinn. Rauner is unacceptable.
- walkinfool - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:32 am:
No
We could do better, but a couple of the known alternatives would be worse.
- Skeeter - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:34 am:
Not a fan of Quinn, but there are a lot of people who would be worse.
Bill Brady comes to mind.
- Jaded - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:34 am:
I voted no, but I do like the shirt.
- wayward - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:35 am:
Yeah, in Illinois, we could do worse than Quinn … and have.
- A Naughty Moose - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:35 am:
Anybody But Everybody Now Running
- FoxValleyPride1 - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:36 am:
47th… I’m gettin’ the bumper stickers printed up now. “Pat Quinn - better than colon cancer.” Jeeeze.
- Carl Nyberg - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:36 am:
As the Mitch Daniels censoring Howard Zinn shows, even Republicans who get fluffed by the media as moderate… even these Republicans are ideological extremists.
Bill Daley is a far worse option than Quinn.
In fact, my conspiracy spider sense tells me Daley is in the race to make Quinn palatable to people like me. Bill Daley is getting put out there to remind Democratic activists that despite Quinn’s faults, he’s not an errand boy for banks and hedge fund managers, like Rahm Emanuel and Bill Daley.
That said, it seems like there’s space for someone who isn’t Quinn or Daley to have a base of 15-20% of the vote just by being on the ballot.
Is there a left-handed non-Irish lesbian from outside Cook County?
- Cassiopeia - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:36 am:
The Governor’s office staff is voting every PC, tablet and smartphone in the office and calling agencies to do the same.
- Loop Lady - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:37 am:
Like who else for instance?
- dupage dan - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:37 am:
Hey, Jesse Ventura ain’t running. How bad can anybody be if he ain’t in the mix? (snark)
- Then again... - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:38 am:
==With Pat Quinn you know what you’ve got==
Really? Not even Pat Quinn knows what we’ve got with Pat Quinn. I voted yes.
Daley, Rauner, whatever. Better than a deep, dark void.
- 3rd Generation Chicago Native - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:39 am:
Anybody, can be any one of our worse politicians, and they are too numerous to count here in Illinois.
- CircularFiringSquad - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:41 am:
Not yes on this one
Could leave us with CousinBrucey, NoTaxBill or BankerBilly which would worse the Blagoof
- wordslinger - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:41 am:
No, I’m more of an anyone-but-Rauner guy.
- ZC - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:44 am:
In his defense, Pat Quinn probably isn’t going to prison during or shortly after leaving office.
- Stones - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:45 am:
Admittedly I have personal reasons for opposing Quinn but also I feel he has been ineffective and has not shown the leadership necessary to be Governor.
- Gregory Tejeda - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:45 am:
I’d be inclined to say “Anybody but the clowns who have already stated their interest in the post.”
But that doesn’t really fit on a t-shirt.

- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:46 am:
Voted “No”…sadly.
Hate the “always”, “never”, “only”, “must”… and “anything” in the context of politics.
I may not like Quinn, or Daley,… or Scott Lee Cohen, or even Jason Plummer … but “anybody” opens up a whole bunch of other Dopes we may not even think about today as options.
A very reluctant “No”, but its the criteria more than Quinn, that is 100% sure
- Chavez-respecting Obamist - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:48 am:
Given the current field, I’m voting for Quinn’s re-election.
- Joe Bidenopolous - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:50 am:
I’m totally mixed on this. I’m with word on anyone-but-Rauner (oh, and Brady and Dillard) for sure, and I think Daley is a worse option than Quinn. I might be able to live with Rutherford…might. But bottom line, my biz sense says I want certainty, even if I don’t agree with that certainty - at least then I know what I’m up against. With PQ, that never exists…he’s with you until the wind blows north, or vice versa
- Wensicia - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:51 am:
No, the possibilities are frightening with the number of nutjobs in this state trying to gain higher office, some of whom have been mentioned by other commenters.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:51 am:
Anybody but Bill Daley! No more from this family in Illinois Government!
- Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:56 am:
Held my nose and voted No. Mostly for fear of the unknown, but then there is that guy, and that one, and that one could decide to run, and what if….
- Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 11:59 am:
ABQ as a motto is dangerous in a state with as many political loonies as ours.
I voted no and I have never voted for PQ.
- Pot calling kettle - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:03 pm:
I’m going along with a lot of the comments above. “Anybody” is much too broad.
- Wumpus - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:12 pm:
We could get Quinn’s mentor and predecessor, Rodney Blagojavich (Mell).
- Waldi - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:14 pm:
I think Quinn has good intentions, but is ineffective. Given the alternative candidates however, he still has my vote.
- wishbone - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:17 pm:
A yes vote. I just watched Quinn sign a bill authorizing that unneeded tax sinkhole called the south suburban airport. There is simply no air travel demand for this white elephant, and we don’t have the resources to duplicate the Ohare, Midway, and Gary airports while our schools and pension programs are melting away. He has absolutely no sense of priorities.
- Anon. - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:24 pm:
“Anyone” is too broad, especially when you consider PQ’s entertainment value.
- Mambo - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:27 pm:
Seriously! What has Pat Quinn done in the last 4 years? I’ll tell you, NOTHING.
- Carlos Danger F/K/A Chicago Cynic - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:30 pm:
How about Pat Quinn, Anthony Weiner or Eliot Spitzer. Remember, death is not an option.
- BIG R. Ph. - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:30 pm:
Anybody but George Ryan (who wasn’t running) got us Rod Blagojevich.
Anybody but George Bush (who wasn’t running) got us BHO.
- Skeeter - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:31 pm:
By the way, I almost voted “yes” just because I suspect Quinn will become aware of this poll and losing will annoy him and considering his failures as a Gov. I would enjoy the fact that Quinn, as opposed to the rest of us, is annoyed.
But then I thought of Brady.
Unfortunately, honesty got the best of me.
- Bill White - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:35 pm:
What Carl Nyberg said:
=== In fact, my conspiracy spider sense tells me Daley is in the race to make Quinn palatable to people like me. Bill Daley is getting put out there to remind Democratic activists that despite Quinn’s faults, he’s not an errand boy for banks and hedge fund managers, like Rahm Emanuel and Bill Daley. ===
Although, I am skeptical whether Bill Daley would agree with this assessment.
- William j Kelly - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:38 pm:
Luckily for Quinn Illinois voters will probably view every democrat challenger and any republican general election opponent as an exception to the anybody but Quinn rule!
- Northsider - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:40 pm:
As noted by others, the “Anybody but (Name here)” meme may be viscerally satisfying, but can lead to all sorts of trouble.
Speaking of which, Bruce Rauner’s pal Kenneth Griffin may have some explaining to do, since his hedge fund, Citadel, is mentioned in today’s federal criminal charges against SAC Capital Advisors.
- RNUG - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:41 pm:
In 40+ years I’ve never voted for a Dem for Gov … but looking at the current D & R field, Quinn is probably the least bad choice of a lot of bad choices.
- Been There - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:48 pm:
===The Governor’s office staff is voting every PC, tablet and smartphone in the office and calling agencies to do the same.===
Which way are they voting ?
- Hoping for Rational Thought - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:52 pm:
He isn’t a criminal or a sociopath but otherwise it is Blago part Deux. Because of that he has blown his chance. Anybody who wants to run for the office of Governor should be consider before Quinn.
- WhoKnew - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 12:55 pm:
Does the back side say “Ditch Madigan”?
- Mokenavince - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:04 pm:
Quinn looks better each day. He should call weekly GA sessions from now to the next election.
And continue to stiff them on their pay. Quinn is better than Dillard or Brady. But not by much.
- Formerly Known As... - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:05 pm:
We should have a “none of the above” option on the ballot, as some foreign locales do.
- Andrew Szakmary - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:08 pm:
Yes Quinn is ineffective, but sometimes ineffective is good. As a prospective public pensioner I am the target of every politician in the state, so I suppose my only hope is that these folks be incompetent rather than brutally efficient in depriving me of my earned benefits.
- TooManyJens - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:10 pm:
As many others, I voted “disagree,” but only because the competition is so poor.
- Joe M - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:12 pm:
I voted “disagree” I don’t like Quinn, but I dislike all of the other currently declared candidates even more. Of the “undeclared” candidates, I would vote for Raoul before I’d vote for Quinn.
- Just Me - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:45 pm:
We have total disfunction in State Government. I would expand this shirt to say anybody but M. Madigan and Cullerton too.
- Belle - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:47 pm:
I’m so disappointed in Quinn but unfortunately, he is not the worst we can do.
- Nickypiii - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:49 pm:
t this point can it get any worse? YES! Anybody but Pat Quinn! Even as a life long Democrat, I cannot vote for this empty suit again.
- Plutocrat03 - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 1:53 pm:
Who sent ‘Anyone’ ?
I don’t want to vote for anyone nobody sent…..
- Joan P. - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 2:13 pm:
“Anybody” opens up too big a can of worms, so, despite my dislike for Quinn, I had to vote “no”.
- God's Country - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 2:40 pm:
Three words: Scott Lee Cohen
- jake - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 3:19 pm:
I voted yes, just for the emotional satisfaction of it, but of course there are some people whom I would prefer Quinn to. Bill Brady and Bruce Rauner are two. Bill Daley MIGHT be one. He is off to a promising start in a race to the bottom with his stunts to out-Quinn Quinn.
- titan - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 3:37 pm:
Definte No.
Why? Blago (yes, he’s still in the pen and banned from office, but there’s others like him out there).
- Susiejones - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 3:39 pm:
Quinn is not a leader. he panders to “the people” and sadly “the people” respond, even though it is a stunt; no substance; no help to actually get anything done. so, I read the “anybody” as any of the announced candidates running for Governor. so in that context, perhaps even Daley would be better, though I will be voting in the Republican primary, so go Dan Rutherford!
- 3rd Generation Chicago Native - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 4:17 pm:
Anyone could be Joe Walsh, Todd Stroger………
- Kathryn - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 4:34 pm:
Quinn goes around the state professing at equal pay rallies to be in favor of equal pay for women urging employers to do the right thing even if not required by law, yet when it comes time to “put his money where his mouth is” he does nothing, he ignores the issue when it is presented to him. I hope women in this state find out about this and vote for another candidate. Anyone but Quinn!!
- G'Kar - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 5:00 pm:
I don’t like Quinn, but I really don’t like/trust Brady or Raumer, so I had to disagree.
- And the horse they rode in on! - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 5:54 pm:
Think Quinn is bad, think again.
As inept as Pat Quinn may seem to be there are far worse politicians to have occupy the Governors mansion. Just look north to the State of Wisconsin and their Governor (Scott Walker).
Would Illinoisans want a Governor who is nothing more than a useful stooge for the Koch brothers and the other big monied corporate interest?
- Norseman - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 6:39 pm:
Right now, I think I’ll write in Willy for Gov.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 7:30 pm:
- Norseman -,
I thought you liked Illinois?
I would need a running-mate, and they better like Cannoli…
- Norseman - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 7:55 pm:
The new system makes write-in’s more complicated. I was thinking of AA, but Lt. Gov. is your choice.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 8:21 pm:
- Norseman -,
It’s in your hands now, just don’t saddle me with “a Jason Plummer” candidate as a running mate.
I would ask - AA - before you select him, however, as I wouldn’t want him saddled with me without asking!
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 8:38 pm:
Actually, - Norseman -, you proved everyone right who voted “No” … because I could be that “anybody”…including me and my “No” vote too …
- Norseman - Thursday, Jul 25, 13 @ 9:28 pm:
Willy, hopefully AA will not give us a Shermanesque statement. I’ve got a button maker to start making Oswego Willy/AA buttons. Let me know what colors you want.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Jul 26, 13 @ 7:45 am:
I am thinking Neon Yellow and Dark Blue - think … the Carhartt t-shirts, that Yellow,… with Dark Blue block lettering.
Don’t worry, I have a Carhartt jacket, but its a bit worn, and not shiny and new like everyone else …
- Mason born - Friday, Jul 26, 13 @ 7:54 am:
I need to stop reading the comments originally voted Yes. Kind of figured the Rauner and Daley ( y two named exceptions) thing would be worked out in the primary. However anybody is one heck of a broad description can you say Monique (i’m not saying just saying) Davis??
