Today’s quote
Friday, Aug 23, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * Bill Daley…
I’m still not convinced that this “Daley the outsider” schtick is gonna work. He’s a Daley, for crying out loud. Everybody with even half a brain knows that name and what it means. So, how do you convince voters that a prominent member of the Daley family is an outsider?

Change your last name to Ryan….

How does Quinn convince voters that he’s a good governor? Populist seems to be doing it so far.
- MrJM - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:42 pm:
“I’ve been around politics and government, but not for the past 12 years, like Governor Quinn has been. In the run up to the 2008 economic collapse, I made a fortune at Wall Street investment banks.”

So the time he spent at the White House doesn’t count as the last 12 years, exactly how?
- Newsclown - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:42 pm:
You push that he was working at the national level, In Commerce and as the Obama staff chief, and not mingling in state politics. I don’t think it works, either.
- wordslinger - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:45 pm:
Won’t work. I can’t believe he’s still peddling it.
He’s the ultimate insider. That’s actually his unique selling point. He was in the Situation Room when Osama got clipped. He hangs out with Jamie Dimon at George Lucas’ wedding reception.
His familiarity with the power players in the world is who he is. You can’t run away from it, not when your name is Daley.
Rauner might get away with it for a while until the negative spots start. If anyone other than Rutheford has money for it.
- Norseman - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:49 pm:
He needs to put something hallucinogenic in the state water systems.
- Keyrock - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:49 pm:
Move to Montana and try it there?
- Louis Howe - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:55 pm:
Reeks of entitlement…and a serious political misjudgment.
- jerry 101 - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 2:58 pm:
So, he wants us to believe that he’s not a political insider. So, does that mean he wants us to see him as a big shot banker who worked for one of those too big to fail banks that got all the huge bailouts?
- dupage dan - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:00 pm:
Keyrock, Daley could become a dental floss tycoon in Montana and move back to Illinois in 12 years. THEN he could call himself an outliar (no sic), or whatever.
- Rich Miller - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:02 pm:
Nice Zappa reference, DD.
- 47th Ward - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:14 pm:
One of the key rules in the political playbook is you shine a spotlight on your biggest weakness. This is the opposite of that strategy.
Daley is an insider’s insider. He needs to embrace it and pivot to competence, which is the best contrast with Quinn’s insiderness. Daley is an insider who can get results for people, Quinn is an insider who can’t get anything accomplished.
Nobody is buying this outsider nonsense and Daley needs to stop trying to sell it.
- Rufus D Doofus - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:16 pm:
Not an outsider(duhhh) but obviously is in serious need of a Campaign Strategy.
- Anonymous - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:20 pm:
The only thing he’s not an outsider to is Prison……….so far anyway
- cover - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:20 pm:

But watch out for those zircon-encrusted tweezers, they could be digging into your wallet…

Well you spell it D-a-l-e-y but you pronounce it Throatwarblermangrove.
- Rudykzooti - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:38 pm:
Zappa, and now Monty Python! Great for a Friday chuckle…the only thing he was outside of was maybe reality of the situation as IL twirled around the bowl…
- A guy... - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:51 pm:
Well, he made the announcement while he was outside. As opposed to inside. What is it that you can’t seem to get. He’ll be an outsider every day that it’s just not too cold or raining. The staff is looking all over the state for retractable dome facilities to keep him an outsider.
- Amalia - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:55 pm:
he said it, but it’s not working, so he moves on. really, move on Bill and Pete. emphasize your strengths, don’t invent things that are implausible.
- Jake From Elwood - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 3:55 pm:
Maybe he wants to be Pony Boy or Soda Pop Curtis.
- Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 4:16 pm:
You are spot on, Rich. He canNOT play the game of trying to be a legit. “Outsider.” No way. He’s a Daley–period. They’d been running things in and around Chicago ‘n Cook County for well-over a HALF OF A CENTURY, for land’s sake! And then William D. even sticks his foot into the door of the CoS in the White House for a smidge!!! The Daleys are the Penultimate INsiders and everybody around these Parts, including Downstate, KNOWS it!!! So his (rather hilarious) attempt at posturing himself in that regard ain’t fooling nobody, or may to a handful at best…!
- Carl Nyberg - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 4:19 pm:
Daley the outsider could work if he went to some foreign country to be active in the Peace Corps, then joined a communal religious order, then went on to live the life of the guy from the Dos Equis commercial.
But Bill Daley’s whole _____ life has been showing up in a room where his father’s political connections opened the door.
What has Bill Daley accomplished in life that has improved the lives of regular folk?
- Joe M - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 4:22 pm:
I don’t see how anyone who is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, and a banking magnate, and was a White House insider, can call themselves an outsider.
- Carl Nyberg - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 4:22 pm:
As long as the Trib is peddling conspiracy theories–that paper is still in business, right?–they might as well go with: Bill Daley is running in the Dem primary to make Quinn seem like an attractive option by contrast.
- Holdingontomywallet - Friday, Aug 23, 13 @ 4:26 pm:
“So, how do you convince voters that a prominent member of the Daley family is an outsider?”
You hope most of them are’t paying attention. That isn’t too difficult in this state.
