“One of the things I always thought in my career that I wanted to do, I thought I would be able to have that opportunity, I hoped, would be to run for office. And even though you’re around it for a long time, you really don’t get a sense of the enormity of it until you get into it,” Daley told the Tribune.
“But the last six weeks or so have been really tough on me, struggling with this. Is this really me? Is this really what I want to spend my next five to nine years doing? And is this the best thing for me to do at this stage of my life?” he said. […]
“There’s no doubt in my mind that Pat Quinn will not be the next governor of Illinois,” said Daley. “This governor is not that strong that somebody should fear running against him.”

And I bet the Democratic County Chairmen’s Association feels pretty good with Daley’s announcement coming 48 hours after their endorsement of Quinn and their rejection of Bill. Again–Wow!

There has to be a fire in the belly. Running for any office, especially Governor … in Illinois…you have to want it so bad, that the lumps you will take mean nothing compared to the desire and motivation to be the Top Politico in all the state.
Plus, lets be real for a moment; was there any chatter, real chatter of a #2, besides the lip service of “Daley vetting”?

This proves my theory. The Daleys, and their people, have never understood state politics. What’s worse is they have never cared to bother to learn, either.
As little as I like Pat Quinn - he’s not a quitter. And he’s willing to show up at places he knows he’ll get booed - like the Stanley Cup parade speech.

Anyone claiming this was a foregone conclusion is kidding themselves. Daley was all over the state working, he was trying to raise funds; he wanted this bad. Something happened that changed his mind, probably something dirty that he wouldn’t be able to overcome, but that’s pure speculation. This is without a doubt a good omen for the Republicans.

Quinn, today, and “player to be named later”,no primary.
Lisa, no Primary, no General opponent.
Jesse, no Primary, no General opponent.
Sheila Simon, takes on Topinka, arguably the most popular Repubican in Illinois, and gets no Primary but after turning on Quinn, no one is losing sleep if Topinka takes Sheila out.
Frerichs gets no Primary and gets … either a campaign run by Jason Plummer, or a Campaign run by Senior HGOP operative for Tom Cross.
This is happening my Slytherin House Republican friends. All the above, are, today, going to be raising dollars, and avoiding conflict to get past March and beyond.
Daley gave the opportunity for Slytherin House Republicans to “take it to” the ILGOP, like a Bill Daley, or the Dem Treasurer’s race…
Now, Bill Daley has made the slating a reality that can lead to money issues for the GOP, and another chance for Pat Quinn to outlast Brady …Dillard …Rauner …Rutherford … as the top of the ticket in ILGOP refuses to understand the problem Rauner brings, and the opportunity for the 3 to attack Rauner and build GOP Unity around the idea that Rauner is what is wrong with Illinois, and while we 3 disagree, we all agree that Bruce Rauner, like Bill Daley,is what is wrong with Illinois.
The ILDems love them a sorting, we in the ILGOP, we love us a dividing.

This does hurt Rauner. It adds to the narrative, yes? Wealthy dudes running for office, that being the only thing they’re known for, just isn’t good enough. Running as an outsider, when you clearly are not, people can see through that.
The ILGOP would do well to pay attention to how you see these things. As it is, as a dyed in the wool Dem, please keep to blogging.

Yes, ans YES. This is the narrative that the other 3 must make part and parcel of whatever they are doing, and whatever they are saying.
The prisim, that is Bruce Rauner, is the prism of Bill Daley, and where we all must come to realize is that Pat Quinn plainted Bill Daley in a corner, made the realities of Bill Daley the narrative, and if the other 3 just do that, make it, “Well, I, ‘A’ am for ‘this’, and ’so-and-so’ is not, the reality is that Bruce Rauner and his pals Rahm Emanuel and Rich Daley helped Rauner do ‘y and z’. Do we want that as Republicans?”
It is the pivot, it is the prism, it is the lookingglass to win for the GOP governors campaign that can turn it more about being republican under the light of what Bruce Rauner is not, as opposed to who thinks being the most Slytherin against the field will turnout voters.

Sad day for Illinois, which desperately needs to be shaken up. On a human level, I understand Bill Daley’s decision. Running is a lot tougher than being behind the scenes. I’m just sorry that he won’t be a candidate, offering ideas, issues, and leadership. I hope his candidacy sends a clear message to Governor Quinn that this is more than a game of patronage and campaigning, that Illinois needs stronger leadership that makes the state proud once again.

Anyone who thinks this helps the GOP flunks Political Science 101. Quinn would have beaten Daley, but he would’ve had to spend a lot of cash that he can now put in the bank. And any incumbent who has to weather a credible primary challenged is always damaged by the experience and weaker in the Fall if he survives.

I would say Mr. Daley came to realize, in part, that he didn’t have that mega-ego required of politicians. I also don’t think his heart was in self promotion. But I also think he realized how broken our system is in Illinois — only in Illinois can you have an incumbent Governor at 30 percent approval receive unanimous county chairs’ endorsements. I would say Illinois isn’t ready for change, which means it may be time for parents like me to look for another state to live in.

Of course it helps the GOP.
You just guaranteed that you will be facing an incumbent with perhaps the lowest approval rating in the country while presiding over the 50th worst unemployment rate in America.
Short term? It would have been nice to have Daley beat up Quinn for a while and force him to spend cash.
Long term? You would much rather face Quinn than Daley or just about anyone else. Even with his reputation as a strong closer.
Plus, every GOP contender just got themselves a nice punching bag. If you don’t want to bloody the party, you pile on and bloody your common enemy. This may actually serve to unite the candidates a bit (not completely, but a bit) by focusing them on a single opponent.

The notion that Dems crossover to vote for Dillard and then unite behind Dillard is a really weird fantasy that somehow thinks we’re heading into 2010. That Kirk Dillard…maybe. But the guy who’s been running hard right, dropping not so subtle digs about his opponent’s sexuality and won the support of Jack Roeser? Umm, I don’t think so. That guy lost most of his crossover appeal with the crazy appeals to the luny right. This Kirk Dillard will be lucky to finish 3rd in the primary.
And yes, something definitely changed for Bill Daley in the last few days. But what I don’t get is why humiliate yourself by basically saying you couldn’t handle the “enormity” of running for office. HUH? You can handle being White House Chief of Staff (ok, I know that’s debatable), but you can’t handle running a statewide campaign that had been done previously by such luminaries as Roland Burris and Rod Blagojevich??? 1) A year, is a LONG time for an incumbent to get over bad numbers, organize, define his opponent, who just was defined in a heated Primary win, and cobble a coalition OPPOSED to the idea that whomever the GOP gets the Nomination, they will be “worse for you than me.”
Seen that movie before, actually saw it 4 years ago.
Further,
The sad truth in a REPUBLICAN Primary, especially in the ILGOP in the past few cycles, its about “firing Madigan” and who is more “pure” and not about winning on the idea that Pat Quinn is what is wrong, himself.
That movie ends bad too, “firing Madigan” with Counties thinking they vote and Veto=Proofed Houses of the General Assembly.
Bill Daley’s departure, today, allows the ILDems to regroup, build their narrative with time, the most precious commodity behind money, on their side …
While the ILGOP, and the 4 potential Nominees worried about who is can beat who in march, and not about who can win it all, without tarnishing themselves or the other 3 in the meantime.
This is bad news for the ILGOP, especially Bruce Rauner … if some campaign is savy enough … with the limits of being broke or underfunded … to make it about not “being Bruce Rauner” and not about “being the Right …Republican”

If hypocrisy was as powerful as you seem to think, we’d never elect anyone. I’m sorry - I really do understand your case against Rauner and I really do respect your opinions generally on all matters GOP, but I continue to think you are radically underestimating Rauner in the primary. GOPers want someone who can win. I think they’ve been out of power long enough that they will compromise their principles if they smell a winner.
Time will tell but I still see an incredibly weak GOP field that Rauner’s money can make a serious difference.

I do not underestimate Rauner, at all.
All I am trying to convey is the map to beat the Payton Prep Clouter. I don’t know if any of the other 3 can do what needs to get done, or if they can see that the path to “win” these Primaries is what is tearing away the opportunity to win General Elections.
Defining themselves, instead of through “purity” which becomes “too extreme” in the Generals, as the “Non-Daley, Non-Rahm, Insider, Fake Every-Man” is so much better than painting yourself as “too extreme” the day you win a Primary … on “Purity”
Am I right? That is what is great about being called out on it, you force me to defend it. If I can’t defend it, well, then …
That doesn’t mean I am going to convert you to my thoughts…
I don’t mind to defend it, question away.

@Skeeter - thank you a bunch. It doesnt give me any pleasure, believe me. But at least for me, as much as I dislike Quinn, voting for a guy like Bill Daley, I just couldn’t picture it.
Re: Bruce’s reaction - Who is trying to “intimidate” you out of the race, Rauner? Is that what you learned from this? So you’ll be tough with the union bosses, blah blah blah. You’ve mentioned that umpteen times now. We get it. But aren’t you just another wealthy guy who views this as a great way to end your career?
What from your previous record shows us you have the ability to forge a workable, doable compromise on these issues? You’re an outsider? Really?

I used to think Obama was the luckiest politician alive…kicks opponents off ballot to get to State Sen. & his major Dem & Repub opponents drop out of U.S. Sen. race, but I think it is Quinn who now gets that moniker. BTW, did you notice Daley quote Shakespere as saying doing the same over & expecting different result is insanity…Albert Einstein said it.

I generally agree with your assessment, and I agree that Rauner can be attacked as simply a different strain of the disease that ails us. That having been said, I happen to know he is generally pretty moderate and we all know the kind of Rs that win in Illinois. So picture a moderate Rauner on a broad spectrum of issues but one that declares war on AFSCME and vows to get our fiscal house in order. That could very well be a path to victory in a general, even for Payton Clouter Bruce.

If the GOP doesn’t take the Payton Prep Clouter out first, Quinn has the knack of taking “extreme” candidates out.
Time will tell & who Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner chooses as his #2 will be “interesting” too.

Actually this may help the GOP. Since there may not be a Quinn challenger, many moderates and independents, who may have voted in the Democratic primary, may crossover and vote for a someone like Rutherford, who has won statewide as a GOP candidate and may appeal to them. These voters could offset the hardcore extremists that keep nominating unelectable candidates. Of course, the Democrat voters could also crossover to vote for someone that they see as easy prey.

If your GOP Primary strategy, in Chicago and Cool County specifically, is to get a good punt of voters to pull a GOP ballot that measurable enough to get over the finish line, you are planning on losing.
Plus, who is going to “find” these Dems in the Primary, and catalog and “vote” these Dems… without a Field Operation?
This is not a strategy, it’s a Hail Mary.

The press conference should be interesting if Bill Daley stays on this “sore loser” narrative. It is unbecoming of him. To flatly state Pat Quinn will not win is comical. It depends on the opponent and the status of “pension reform” at that point. My feeling is only Dillard can beat him, but Dillard may not get out of the GOP primary.

This strategy would be political suicide for the GOP. Quinn won in 2010 for 1 reason, AFSCME. State employees and their family members were the reason he won. In order for a GOP candidate to win in the fall he or she needs to appeal to AFSCME voters. The AFSCME leadership is all radical left, but many AFSCME members are not. Declaring war on these members, and threatening their jobs is not going to win their votes. Chicago, and many parts of the collar counties, are union. Running against unions will weaken support in the largest voting area in the state. Downstate, which is heavily GOP, has many state facilities. Some of these facilities are the largest source of employment in the area. Run against these people’s jobs and see how many of these GOP vote for Quinn. Brady ran on this strategy in 2010 & lost. If the GOP thinks that it can win by making AFSCME the scapegoat for Illinois problems, say hello to 4 more years of Quinn.

This is not Indiana or Wisconsin or any state south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Taking on the Unions, and being a hypocrite about education, and making money off public pensions, and the Rahm and Rich Daley connections …even in a General Election…
Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is a dream-type candidate for a Populist like Quinn.
Rauner is like running against Brady again, without any politcal base of operation to begin with.

There is no question that AFSCME was instrumental in Quinn’s 2010 victory, but don’t underestimate the help the trades gave to Quinn too. Dennis Gannon and his crew worked relentlessly too to deliver Quinn.

Good point. There was a coaliton of the “Anyone but Bill Brady” and Quinn pulled it off becuase that coalition, actually worked the last 3 weeks, and especially worked on Election Day to ensure the Defeat of bill Brady, as well as the Election of Pat Quinn.
Payton Prep Clouter Bruce Rauner is the “same movies”, just different actors, and a more motivated “supporting cast”.

The only reason I know is I was one of those recruits. I am dreaming about a Quinn versus Rauner election just for the entertainment value. What does Mayor Emanuel do in that race and if he makes the wrong move there, it could cost him during the mayoral election.
I also believe that Kirk Dillard, if he gets out of the GOP primary (looks doubtful), can defeat Quinn in a close race.
