The challenge for many parents of folks with developmental disabilities who live at Murray DC is that the state is pushing moves to group homes (CILA, Community Integrated Living Arrangement) and saying these are the preferred placements for their loved ones. These very same group home agencies have been pinched by the state beyond measure the last several years with payments so late some providers could no longer borrow money for operating expenses and either had to scale back their operations or, in some cases, close down altogether. The openings available are, in some cases, either quite a distance away from where the parents (who are frequently guardians) live or are not suitable placements for their children. There are some parents who are being unreasonable but, in many cases, the parents are being given, for all intents and purposes, a hobson’s choice. DD/SOF parent groups tend to be close knit and active. It is my opinion that SOFs are sub-optimal for long term care but the state has failed miserably on providing suitable community placements.
