A little perspective
Tuesday, Nov 19, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * A recent Ipsos poll found crack-smoker Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s approval rating at 40 percent. Gov. Pat Quinn would do public handstands if his approval rating was even close to that. His approval numbers haven’t been above 40 since early 2010.

Rob Ford is the Marion Barry of Canada
- phocion - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:06 am:
Quinn should get the crack pipe out.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:10 am:
Rob Ford is hilarious and Canadians love their comedy. 40% of his voters can’t wait to see what he does or says next, like this gem from yesterday:
“I urinated in a parking lot…what does that have to do with anything?”
- Rahm'sMiddleFinger - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:13 am:
Rich,
Probably a good time for you test it yourself and also do Quinn- GOP head to heads.
- William j Kelly - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:13 am:
It is obvious to me Canadians think they are watching a Chris Farley impersonator and don’t even realize he is an elected official.

quinn was re-elected, ford was politically neutered yesterday.

I hope Rob Ford gets some help. That dude is a side order of back bacon away from the Big Gripper. Seriously, any second now.
Back in the day, I worked in a Chicago startup with a bunch of Ontarions.
Nice enough people. But after a few Molsons, they would start with the digs on Chicago, and how Toronto was so much better — less corrupt, cleaner. What they really meant was “white.”
Now we have Rob Ford, mayor of Canada’s largest city.
Take off, you hosers.
- Casual Observer - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:19 am:
And 9% approve of congress. Who are the people that enjoy and encourage dysfunction in government?

Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer are going crack pipe shopping, together.

- dupage dan - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:35 am:
So, Pat Quinn would enjoy better approval ratings if he lived in a van down by the river……?
- Anon - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:35 am:
Don’t condone what he allegedly did, but I am assuming that the videotapes were accurate.
What struck me in interviews is that Ford reportedly cut spending and taxes in Canada which is difficult. Canadians are taxed to the max and count every cent as a result. Canadians have told me that Toronto is the most USA type of city in the Dominion (population, crime, etc.).

I cant wait until some Illinois or Chicago politico get’s called out for getting drunk or high red handed. Im surprised all these other cities have had this occur before here. I personally could care leas because when it comes down to it they all do it and they still can handle the job.
- Norseman - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:50 am:
Ford is an entertaining buffoon good for a laugh. Quinn is neither competent or entertaining.
- DuPage - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:53 am:
@dupage dan,
Quinn wouldn’t be able to find any room to park his van by the river. All spots would be filled by TRS-SERS-SURS retirees if Quinn’s pension cutting plans go through.
- AFSCME Steward - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 11:55 am:
The problem is that if Quinn decided to become a total screw-up like Ford, he would mess that up. He would pound down 30 non-alcoholic beers and get his coke from the guy selling baby powder in baggies.

Wordslinger
Have you ever been to Toronto??
It’s hardly what one would call “white”
- Excessively Rabid - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 12:10 pm:
And he’s running the Blago playbook - people’s champion bullied by the evil media.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 12:10 pm:
Train, that was a while back. Toronto has undergone some changes in the last 20 years.
- Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 12:28 pm:
It’s a shame Chris Farley isn’t with us now. I’m sure the things he could’ve done with the Rob Ford character would’ve been hilarious.
- dang - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 1:06 pm:
Free Rob Ford! Free Rob Ford!

lol
=I personally could care leas because when it comes down to it they all do it and they still can handle the job.=
Yeah. And based on that statement, if they all do it, then you have to wonder about the state that the State’s in because they’re handling the job.
- Wumpus - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 1:23 pm:
Yes, while wordslinger goes after imaginary racists, too much of Chicago continues to circle the drain. W/S is a poster I enjoy reading, but too often people take offense of what someone may have meant opposed to what is really going on.
- PoolGuy - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 1:30 pm:
if Chris Farley was still alive, the Toronto city council would have call a vote to replace Rob Ford with Farley.
- Chris - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 1:56 pm:
“Toronto has undergone some changes in the last 20 years.”
Toronto (the 6 munis) was 37% ‘visible minority’ in ‘96, and is 49% now. Yes, a change, but hardly from lily white.
Now, on the ‘cleaner’ comment–I would say the same thing about Chicago compared to NYC or EsEff, and it has *nothing* to do with the skin color of the residents, and everything to do with (at least the perception of) garbage and grime on the sidewalks and streets.

- Ahoy! - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 2:44 pm:
Hey Congress’s approval rating is around 9%, Quinn and the crack smoker are rockin the polls!
- PublicServant - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 2:47 pm:
Is there still time for Rob to run as an Independent? If so, I’ve got a great slogan:
Rob Ford for Governor of Illinois - Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
- Anon - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 2:51 pm:
Kevin Farley, Chris’ brother, is also a comedian and actor, so maybe he could play Ford.
- Andrew Szakmary - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 3:06 pm:
If Quinn and legislative leaders are delusional enough to really believe that the patently unconstitutional pension diminishments they are pushing will stand up in state and federal court, they must be doing drugs as well. Not necessarily crack, but something.

As a state employee all I can say is - he moves down here with us and it’ll be “there goes the neighborhood”. He can’t have my spot…..

Quinn needs a lot - I said ALOT more beer and brats, and a lot less common decency to belly up to the 400 lb Deranged Gasbag du Toronto
- William j Kelly - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 5:03 pm:
In all seriousness someone really should step in and get mayor ford some help, at the rate he’s going his next headline will be on the obituary page.
- Henry Clay - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 6:16 pm:
One more jelly donut and “Pooofff”, Ford will be gone like a puff of smoke. This guy has one foot in the grave and the other foot on a bannana peel. As bizarre as this character is, Rob Ford still has a band of blindly loyal followers who feel that he can do no wrong. Ford may be a political clown but remember that he still is polling higher numbers than Obama and Quinn. Maybe Pat and Barack should ask Santa for a pipe for Christmas?
- Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 7:06 pm:
That rating won’t really matter “a hill of beans” to the Governor at all, though, (hate to tell some of you all teasing him and detractors of PQ above), if he has just one more VOTE than his opponent/s come Election Day next November, which…something just still tells me he probably will…!
- Mighty M. Mouse - Tuesday, Nov 19, 13 @ 10:27 pm:
===His approval numbers haven’t been above 40 since early 2010. ===
But how long has it been since it was polled?
I don’t recall PQ’s popularity being measured in any reputable public poll in quite some time. In light of the overwhelming approval of his veto of the GA’s salaries I think the only question is how much it has gone up since it was last polled.
Right now, everything considered, in my view the Republicans have entered Bill Daley territory. Remember the difficulty some had visualizing his “path to victory,” before Daley dropped out? Granted, we’re almost a year out and six months is a lifetime in politics, but I’m having a hard time imagining any Republican gubernatorial nominee having a realistic path to victory.
I don’t think even Rauner’s money can overcome his phoniness and utter lack of authenticity.

PQ: I urinate on public employees every day. It’s what I was put on earth to do.
Hey, that kinda pronouncement is worth the wait!
