- Diogenes in DuPage - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:09 pm:
… another reason I am a recovering Catholic ….
- Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:09 pm:
It’s nice to see the Bishop tell gay people they are being controlled by the devil. I can’t understand why any members of this diocese would support such nonsense. It’s one thing to be against gay marriage but this guy is conducting an all out assault on gay people. Is that the new crusade of the Catholic Church? To see how hateful it can be towards gay people?
- OneMan - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:14 pm:
Ritual to be said in Latin….
Didn’t know the devil didn’t speak English…
- Six Degrees of Separation - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:15 pm:
Didn’t he borrow the line “I exorcise you” from a Richard Simmons video?
- walkinfool - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:17 pm:
Okaaay.
What the Bishop does in his own Church is his business, as long as it stays there. It seems heartfelt and sincere, for him. He is choosing to condemn many of his fellow parishioners — again his business.
Just stay away from the rest of us, and our precious American government.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:17 pm:
Priorities.
- Samurai - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:22 pm:
I have been trying to get out of the office and exorcise all day.
- Snucka - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:25 pm:
It is actually nice that the Bishop has chosen to make a public spectacle out of his opposition. The more people who can see the way that these people actually talk and think, the less relevant organized religion will become.
- SpfldCatholic - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:27 pm:
The good Bishop’s time would be better spent helping those who had their lives uprooted by a tornado this past weekend.
- Normal, Just curious - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:32 pm:
A man adorned in a purple robe got me into this mess in the first place! Hope Fr. Tom Donovan is helping officiate this ridiculousness.
- Robert the Bruce - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:33 pm:
Is he saying the most offensive things in Latin or english?
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:34 pm:
The Thomas More Society press release makes no sense to me.
- Chavez-respecting Obamist - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:34 pm:
Is there anyone there with a ukelele?
- PolPal56 - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:40 pm:
SpfldCatholic, I do believe your Pope Francis would say the same thing.
- Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:44 pm:
==The idea that free people can be ‘compelled by law to compromise the very religious beliefs that inspire their lives’ as the ‘price of citizenship’ is a chilling and unprecedented attack on freedom,” stated Tom Brejcha, President and Chief Counsel at the Thomas More Society. “This affects believers in myriad ways—how they live out their faith, how they educate their children, and how they operate their businesses.” ==
How does it do that exactly? Here’s a hint: it doesn’t. I hate to tell them but their religious beliefs have no bearing on the law. Don’t perform a gay marriage in your church if you don’t want to. They want to take it further and say they should have a right to discriminate against gays too in all aspects of life. That disgusts me.
- cermak_rd - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:45 pm:
Chavez-respecting Obamist,
Of course not, everyone knows that Uke players are of the devil.
- catrike - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:50 pm:
I used to be angry at people like the bishop, but now I just pity them.
- circularfiringsquad - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:52 pm:
Can the Catholic church be any more marginalized than at this moment?
- sal-says - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 4:58 pm:
The good bishop would be far more helpful if he exorcized hunger and homelessness from IL.
Or was that just another strainerhead story?
- Wensicia - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:03 pm:
All I see is this Bishop exorcising his right to hate, to discriminate, while hiding behind “the devil”, not the Lord. I would suggest confession is in order, Father.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:09 pm:
Are armed policemen a regular thing at services at the cathedral? It was mentioned they were present when the Rainbow Sash people were in town.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:13 pm:
===Are armed policemen a regular thing at services ===
Under this mayor, at least.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:18 pm:
I don’t think I’ve ever been to services where police were present. I don’t think my old pastors growing up would have allowed it.
- Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:28 pm:
Just got back from the Equal Marriage signing ceremony. It was wonderful to hear such a diverse group praise the governor and legislators for bringing equality to marriage. Even the Speaker gave very brief remarks.
As for Bishop Paprocki, I’m sorry but he’s obsessed with this issue in a very weird way. Funny, but I haven’t heard of other Bishops in the 15 other states performing an exorcism over this. Can you say extreme?
- Chavez-respecting Obamist - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:37 pm:
Dear Bishop,
Those who scream the loudest have the most to hide.
- Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:41 pm:
Chavez,
I made the same point not too long ago and was summarily slammed by Catholic friends. But yes, it’s a pretty obvious question as there’s a long history of those that scream the loudest being gay themselves.
- olddog - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:49 pm:
I realize the bishop was preaching to the choir, but since was playing politics, he should have thought more about the optics. The contrast between his little photo op in the cathedral and the bill-signing ceremony in Chicago was breathtaking.
- Anonymous - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 5:56 pm:
Aside from the SSM issue, the bishop is clearly enamored of himself. Grabbing the headlines is becoming a troubling trend.
Humility, bishop, humility. He abhors and yet masters the cultural muck of “Look at Me!!”
- Ggal - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 6:00 pm:
Wordslinger: I don’t think I’ve ever been to services where police were present.
==============
I know my kid tries to hit midnight mass along with the other police officers on duty.
- MyTwoCents - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 6:27 pm:
First of all I think saying “armed police” is redundant. This isn’t Great Britain.
Secondly, there’s an interesting comparison going on right now in Springfield. On one hand you have the SHG football team, demonstrating their beliefs through kindness and generosity. Then you have the bishop promoting a position that he does not have to push as hard as he has been. Which example would be better in attracting new parishioners to the Catholic Church?
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 6:57 pm:
The best thing to me about the bishop’s words are their futility. I was at the bill-signing today, and it is now law, so the bishop’s words are moot.
Some of the first people honored at the ceremony were religious leaders who stood for marriage equality. Let’s not forget these, also.
Judy Baar Topinka made a funny when she said she’s willing to be a “flower girl” at a gay wedding. The four Republicans who voted for marriage equality received some of the loudest applause, incidentally. They deserve it for taking a courageous stand.
- Snucka - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 7:19 pm:
Grandson of Man: Amen (irony intended).
- tikkunolam - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 7:53 pm:
“Dare no more, oh cunning serpent
to deceive the human race”
Is no one else chuckling at that one?
- Ex - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 8:56 pm:
Seriously. I’m an ex priest and an ex Cathoic. I know so much about this diocese and behind the scenes. But I’m not telling here. I will say that I see this irreverent action today in the Cathedral as hocus pocus. Not prayer as The Lord taught us.
- Oh Man - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 10:20 pm:
I wonder what his big boss in Vatican City would have to say about the Bishop’s spectacle? Hmmm.
- Bobio - Wednesday, Nov 20, 13 @ 11:25 pm:
all you geniuses who think your so smart might not be what’s right or wromg
- 100 Miles West - Thursday, Nov 21, 13 @ 8:24 am:
tikkunolam, When he says cunning serpent is that reference to Squeezy the Pension Python?
- Ghost - Thursday, Nov 21, 13 @ 8:25 am:
given the shape of our soceity, perhaps he should excercise us first.
- SpfldCatholic - Thursday, Nov 21, 13 @ 8:56 am:
Bobio, did you endulge a bit too much before commenting? What in the world does that mean?
- West Side the Best Side - Thursday, Nov 21, 13 @ 9:05 am:
Bobio - “Your so smart” what? Your so smart attitude? Your so smart comments? Oh wait, did you mean “you’re”?
- cermak_rd - Thursday, Nov 21, 13 @ 9:12 am:
I was disappointed though. I was hoping for some flying statuary or at least a falling crucifix or something.
