Rich went on vacation, and all we got was this lousy intern

Tuesday, Apr 15, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Yup. It’s me, again.

You guessed it: I am coming out of retirement briefly to take you through the next week or so because Rich is off enjoying spring break. Once he comes back, I go right back in the box.

* If you were here the last time I filled in, then you know the jokes get a lot worse as the week goes on.

You would also know most of the day’s posts will be up first thing in the morning since I am on state time during the day. I appreciate all of your comments and emails, which is why my Twitter account and email address are available at the top of every post I do.

So here we go, gang. How is everybody this morning?

    That is said with respect.

Just tell me he didn’t leave you with puppy care duties too it’s bad enough babysitting all of us.

  4. - Pat C - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 8:30 am:

Actually its worse than that. You aren’t even an intern now :)

    Welcome back!

Miller takes more time off than a State worker…LOL

  8. - AFSCME Steward - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:05 am:

I’m just waiting for the first “Journalists Gone Wild” video.

  9. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:14 am:

It is easy to remember someone named Barton.
    Or Dolph.
    Or Theodore.
    Or Shadrach, Meshach, or Abednego.

It must be easy to remember Mormons too.

  10. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:24 am:

    Oh Barton -
    Let me catch you up.

There are these two guys named Oswego Willy and wordslinger. Since you left, they’ve lost their minds. Feel free to delete anything they post. Limit Willy to 20000 posts per day. That should help Rich cut back on the server space being used up by him. Wordslinger is on a medication that causes him to have a serious keyboard flatulence with lapses of mania. Feel free to delete him too.

Rich told me to tell you that I’m supposed to be paid for my postings. For this week.

So he already owes me $51.89.

  11. - Langhorne - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:36 am:

BLor, i hope rich pays you twice as much as last time

  12. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:48 am:

My favorite villainous name since Snidely Whiplash. I hope you are well. I am still down to take over capitolfax with you. Don’t give the keys back to Rich.

  13. - Toure's Latte - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 9:56 am:

Welcome back! I like your quick hits links. Kind of a self-contained news feed: so, happy to see them again.

Barton, glad to see you in the big chair. I’m willing to pay VM the 52 bucks just for this post alone. LOL.
I’m sure it’s in jest, but I’ve got a screen full of coffee and snot from reading this one.

  15. - D.P.Gumby - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 11:05 am:

So, did the Obama campaign ever pay the City of Springfield? Inquiring minds want to know. Wasn’t that one of the stories that existed the last time you were around?

Wise Disclosure and Disclaimer: ” first thing in morning since I’m on State time during the day.”

    We don’t want a ” Grass Mowing” scandal (6/9/1994)

“So here we go, gang. How is everybody this morning?”

Good morning, sir, and welcome back. I hope you are well this morning.

This morning I spent a little time in remembrance of a dear friend I lost 17 years ago today. He was debonair and had joie de vivre. He had a great attitude and tried to live in the moment. He worked the job he loved and lived the life he chose. He left us early in life, but he had a full life.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 11:40 am:

Today is the one year anniversary of “Boston Strong”.

Three people lost their lives, living free, on Patriots’ Day. I will remember all those, including the wounded, as “Boston Strong”.

Also, I commeneted here as “42″ because it’s also Jackie Robinson Day in the Bigs. Jackie was chosen, not because he would fight off those not wanting him in the big Leagues, but because he wouldn’t. Jackie Robinson is a baseball hero and American hero, and my “42″ is my rememberence of what he did, that was bigger than Baseball.

  19. - A guy... - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 12:20 pm:

All of that true Willie. Maybe just maybe, it wasn’t bigger than baseball, but it made baseball bigger, which is even more significant. Good post.

  20. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 12:38 pm:

Oh Vman, you just sent me back to my Baptist youth choir days…

    “Shadrach, Meshach, Abdnego
Lived in Judah a long time ago
They have funny names and they lived far away
But they taught us a lesson we can learn from today
This is a story that you ought to know about
Shadrach! (What kind of name is that?)
Meshach! (Who has a name like that?)
    Shadrach! Meshach! A-Bed-Ne-Go -whoa-oa-oa…”

    I have to go now.

  21. - Barton Lorimor - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 12:39 pm:

OK, lunch time. Let’s see if I can respond to some of these.

Willy - I almost made a Joan Rivers crack in the post this morning, but deleted it for one reason or another. Yours is better.

Break - Leave Oscar behind? Are you sure we are talking about the same Rich?

LCD - You know I have never seen that movie. #truestory

    Ray - +1 #godawgsgo

Steward - That’s subscribers only content.

A guy… - Good to see you back. I have no idea what you’re talking about, though. ’slinger brought the keg and Willy has the first cop watch shift.

Gumby - Actually the last time you might have seen my byline it was snowing and unseasonably cold. Go figure, right?

  22. - Barton Lorimor - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 12:40 pm:

    connor - Don’t be a dope.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 12:46 pm:

Welp, I better stop with the Jameson Keg Stands…

We are all in good hands, thanks for keeping the lights on.

  24. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 1:18 pm:

Soccermom, that must have been a pretty cool choir.

Good Heavens Barton, you’ve put us all at risk! LOL.

  26. - Mokenavince - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 5:14 pm:

The White Sox should have a reliever as good as you. Keep pitching!

  27. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Apr 15, 14 @ 5:18 pm:

Well, Barton, your querie was posed about our status this MORNing, but here at 5:10ish in the afterNOON today, “the way it is” for ME right now is that things are “just” fine. Also, just would like to note that your down-to-earth approach and humility in your temporary role is quite admirable, and just in case you didn’t notice, I had nothing but good things to say about how well you filled-in LAST time after the “Blog Master” returned (and whether you were aware of this or not), ASKED us how things went with you at the helm! God bless, and hope ya have lots of fun “runnin’ the Show” around here for a bit again during this “Holy Week” for many of us…!
