GOP immigration unity at rally

* Jim Edgar and Leader Radogno…
“It’s time that we address a problem that’s been lingering for too long,” said former governor Jim Edgar.
One by one, the state’s top Republicans sang the virtues of immigration reform.
“Immigration reform is good for your family, for my family,” said Sen. Christine Radogno.
Jim Oberweis…
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jim Oberweis said he is against a provision in the measure that would give a pathway to citizenship for adult immigrants already in the country illegally, saying it amounts to “amnesty.”
This after he reportedly called the now-infamous helicopter over Soldier Field ad a mistake.
Bruce Rauner…
Meanwhile, GOP governor candidate Bruce Rauner would not say if he backed the proposal, saying he hadn’t studied it and arguing that it’s up to Congress and President Barack Obama to negotiate the details.
Judy Baar Topinka…
Joe Walsh…
Walsh also led a small group that picketted outside the event.
* A campaign roundup…
* US Sen. Durbin says he’s aims to hault corruption
* Bustos campaign builds fundraising lead over Schilling in 1st quarter results
* New Lake County GOP leader wants unity
* Erickson: Pizza fueling Kilquist campaign
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:26 pm:
Oberweis was going to arrive by black helicopter, but have you tried to valet a black helicopter?
Was Oberweis, now the Former State Central Committeeman, “enlightened” when SSM was voted on, or will it take 10 years and 5 more losses need to happen. I would ask state Senator Oberweis, but I am sure he has a fake phone call to take ala Mary Ann Ahern.
Dope.
- William j Kelly - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:38 pm:
This would have been the perfect day for Oberwaste to go to Florida.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:40 pm:
BTW, was “Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti there?
Not enough liability insurance, or is she on the Jason Plummer Tour already?
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:55 pm:
No sign of Sanguinetti Willy. And Rauner spoke for about three minutes without actually saying anything.
I’ll give Oberweis some credit for walking into the belly of the beast and sticking to his guns. He’ll never support amnesty and wants to secure the borders, etc.
Schock and Kinsinger sent video, but Dold was there. The common theme there? None said he’d ask Boehner to call the bill. Not a one.
The CEO types were smart to call the Republicans on the carpet, but they didn’t make much progress. I thought it was ironic to have Denny Hastert speaking forcefully in favor of House passage of the Senate immigration reform bill while Speaker Boehner uses the “Hastert Rule” to prevent it from coming to the floor.
Anybody think the House GOP could put 30 votes on it if they really wanted to pass it? Me too. It’s a shame they are so gutless.
- Upon Further Review - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:59 pm:
What were the immigration quotas and the deportation rates during the Great Depression?
America does not need to enact new immigration laws. The system is broken because the governments (Federal, State and Local) refuse to enforce the current laws.
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:02 pm:
Upon Further Review, you’re out of your depth on this subject. Please stop spouting slogans. If you want actual research to compare different eras, do it yourself. Maybe you’ll learn something in the process.
- Longtime follower - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:04 pm:
I really think Jim Edgar needs to shut up. He could have helped his bud, Dillard a lot more, but chose not to. They have proven they are not effective anymore.
If you want to lay low, Jim, lay low, into the sunset, accept that you were the best in the last several decades, but now gone.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:06 pm:
===No sign of Sanguinetti Willy.===
Thanks, - 47th Ward -. Appreciate that.
Dear Rauner Crew,
If “Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti is so awful, that your Hispanic running mate not only can’t attend a forum on immigration that … Jim Oberweis … let that fester… Jim Oberweis can attend, but “Slip and Sue” is a no-show, you better start looking for a way to dump Evelyn, get former state Senator Meeks as the #2, and move on.
How embarrassingly pathetic. What is the Rauner Crew afraid of, “Slip and Sue” might have to talk? Evelyn is barely qualified to be a City Council member, now she is a no-show on immigration? Do Illinois a favor, stop embarrassing “Slip and Sue”, let her go and do, whatever it is she does, since being touted as a Latina on the Ticket, and not attending something like that reeks of “Hurting not Helping” anyone, including herself.
Pathetic.
- DuPage Rep - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:11 pm:
Mr. Willy,
See your favorite target Slip and Sue at the event. Too bad you don’t watch Univsion.

- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:17 pm:
If she was there, she wasn’t introduced by Rauner or anyone else DuPage Rep. If an unknown candidate appears at an event but isn’t introduced, is that like a tree falling in the forest when no one is around?
Because I didn’t hear a thing about Sanguinetti yesterday. Or the day before for that matter.
- DuPage Rep - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:20 pm:
Well, at least acknowledge that you were wrong 47th Ward. Because you don’t hear about something does not mean that the target audience didn’t hear as well. Hope you got your Spanish to English dictionary out for the TV coverage of Sanguinetti.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:21 pm:
===If she was there, she wasn’t introduced by Rauner or anyone else DuPage Rep. If an unknown candidate appears at an event but isn’t introduced, is that like a tree falling in the forest when no one is around?===
“Slip and Sue” was a nobody.
Thanks for the link, I have to be honest, I forgot what she looked like. If you are utterly ignored by all, and you ARE there, that speaks volumes about how much value Evelyn has.
For Cripes Sake, the ticket let Jason Plummer speak when he attended things, lol.
It’s so much worse than if she didn’t attend in the first place. Yikes.
- DuPage Rep - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:25 pm:
Willy,
I don’t think you have a clue what the Rauner folks are doing with Sanguinetti. Like the Quinn camp, you are just going to have to sit back and wait for it to hit you. I respect your opinions because you know a heck of a lot about politics, but your hatred towards Rauner is blinding you.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:33 pm:
- DuPage Rep -,
I appreciate your compliment, I enjoy going back and forth with you. You hold up your end of the bargain well.
===I don’t think you have a clue what the Rauner folks are doing with Sanguinetti.===
If that event is any indication, the Rauner Crew doesn’t know what to do with her. You have Mass Media, and no one intros her. No one lets her get to the podium? No one lets English speaking women see a Latina?
Like I said, Jason Plummer attended, he would get at the bare, bare, BARE minimum, the “wave” and announcement, if not the chance to speak. Being ignorant of big picture optics is either gross negligence or fearful of damage.
It is. Can’t spin the slight of a Latina, running as a #2, even by her running mate at an immigration event, as good strategy. It ain’t.

He’s lost any credibility on this topic. He’s blinded by his own lack of success in predicting what would happen to date. He’s blowing this one too. He’ll learn in November where she’s been and what she’s doing. Ain’t often you hear of a very successful immigrant who goes on to be a college law professor at a top flight law school, wins a seat on the city council of a large city (over 50K) and becomes an LG Nominee, but she’s not too smart. Pretty amazing really.

And… who couldn’t even get her running mate to acknowledge she was even in the ROOM at an immigration event, and is so impressive, everyone running on the ticket, forgot to mention her too, and what really impresses me most; “Slip and Sue” couldn’t even get to the podium.
“Pretty amazing really”…
- A guy... - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:51 pm:
But she did get on the ticket, didn’t she?
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:52 pm:
DuPage Rep,
I was there, I didn’t see her, and she wasn’t introduced. Maybe my Espanol needs some work, becuase I.m not sure if she told Univision what Rauner’s position was on immigration reform? Because he said he hadn’t stuidies it enough to really have an opinion on it.
But you seem to know a lot about the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor. Does Ms. Sanguinetti support comprehensive immigration reform? Will she contact Speaker Boehner and Illinois House Republicans to urge House passage of the Senate bill?
Because that’s what this particular event was about and if she attended, she must have an opinion on the subject, right?
- Smoggie - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:54 pm:
Regarding Rauner –
I have to say, he’s got a point here.
This is federal issue. It is not a state issue.
It would be great if people would focus on the task they were elected to take on.

Is Rauner going to take a position on ANYTHING before November?
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:57 pm:
If Rauner wants others to judge him by choosing a personal injury defendant whose target was every governmental entity close to that train station, and that Rauner so rarely mentions her, it’s news she gets named, and the fact that while working for Jim Ryan “saw corruption” but was either inept at reporting it, or ignored it happening, or is clueless, a lawyer, to what corruption is…
As she does the “Jason Plummer Border Tour” game plan of “out of sight, out of trouble”… Yep, I don’t mind judging that.
…and she couldn’t even SPEAK… on immigration reform from the podium.
Being on a ticket, doesn’t make you qualified for the job, just qualified to be on a ticket. Big difference.

While battling MS and helping raise a family. Politics aside, that’s pretty remarkable.
In regards to the politics of the situation? Well, many commenters recently spent a great deal of time emphasizing the great importance of “showing up” at every committee hearing held during spring break.
If nothing else, at least Sanguinetti “shows up”. Unlike Vallas, who “no-showed” for an entire primary.
- A guy... - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:05 pm:
OW, that is a pathetic thesis. A mind that can’t change when the facts are presented indicates you either ignore the facts or prefer to not believe them. Neither is the sign of intelligence. Stubbornness is willful. She spoke to an audience in the interview much larger than the people in the room. The audience most affected wasn’t in the room. I’m confident you’re gonna catch on to this pretty soon.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:08 pm:

Look, Connecticut would have fell in the ocean had Paul Vallas came back. Connecticut schools, even his district, would have been overrun by Massachusetts, had Paul Vallas left…
Vallas is important. He will yell at you until you believe it…
- A guy... - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:09 pm:
FKA, not to mention that he continues to make fun of a very unfortunate accident that still causes discomfort to this day…because she sued everybody. Intergovernmental agreements mean the City, Metra, Union Pacific, et al. all had responsibility for the area of the incident. All HAD to be named. Willie doesn’t let the facts get in the way on this one. He forgot what she looked like. Gee Willie, I’ve seen her a number of times. She’s a very attractive woman. Not that easy to forget.
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:10 pm:
===Can you offer up a report on what Paul Vallas had to say in any language?===
I’m pretty sure Paul Vallas would have no problem calling Speaker Boehner and urging him to bring comprehensive immigration reform to a vote in the House. And he could probably say it in Greek but I doubt Boehner would understand him.
The Democrats’ position is pretty clear on immigration, which is why this event was designed to get Illinois Republicans on the record. If Rauner doesn’t think a Governor should have a position on a federal issue, why did he attend?
- Smoggie - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:12 pm:
Come on, A Guy.
The GOP is supposed to be about personal responsibility.
She, in contrast, was a clod and slipped, and rather than take responsibility, she sued people.
Or maybe she didn’t realize snow and ice can be slippery. That’s a possibility too of course.
- Chavez-respecting Obamist - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:12 pm:

Chavez, why should he speak at all on this issue?
Can you explain to me why his position on this issue would make a difference when people are considering voting for him?
Heck, this is the rare time that Rauner seems to have shown a working understanding of the job of governor.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 2:16 pm:
- A guy… -,
They hide her. They do.
Facts are she did file a personal injury case against her town, and everyone and their brother attached to the station. She speaks of seeing corruption, but either did nothing, ignorant as to how to report it, or as a lawyer, ignorant to the legal of corruption.
The Rauner Crew loves TV, even Spanish Language TV. You don’t vote “pluses” you go from up 20 points to winning by 3, and leading Quinn by only 4.
I get it. “Slip and Sue” is a liability. A good campaign introduces Evelyn at that event; a great campaign insists she gets podium time. A smart campaign knows a liability, and hides the weakness from the masses.

It all started going south (in more ways than one), with Clinton. I expected more from Bush II, but Jeb certainly has stuck his neck out lately, hasn’t he? I’d like to hear more from him. I voted for his old man, but not his brother.
Obama will end up as the worst for breaking up families and depriving hardworking people of making a living and providing necessary labor.
For shame.
Why Obama ever thought the Tea Party would love him if he danced to their tune is beyond me. He gave them way too much attention and wasted his and our precious time when there was important grownup work to be done.

“I need a job.”
I’m sure Sam Sianis and the rest of the tight Chicago metro Greek community will kick in some to Quinn because of Vallas, but I don’t think that’s game-changing money.
Does anyone have any doubt that when Vallas eventually emerges, there will be serious conflict between him and Quinn before it’s all over?
Strange choice. I don’t think louie gov choice is a big deal, but this one is all potential downside, no upside.

Not going to happen. Why should he?
Rich, Bernie, Brownie, Hinz, Pearson and Charlie have, at various times, reported and called out Rauner for what I would call, but they have not, cowardice, lies and cynical b-s.
At some point, voters have to educate themselves. It’s not like there was a mystery about Blago in that second election. But he got 1.7 million votes. No victims there.

You are either in denial or out of touch with reality. The Obama administration is working to rewrite the rules to halt almost all deportations with the exception of violent criminals.
As for your bogus numbers, the administration is padding the totals by counting people intercepted at the border as deportations.
Unlike you, I have actually met and spoken with a dozen agents employed by Immigration and Custom Enforcement. The union representing these agents routinely visits Capitol Hill to and provides testimony about the total lack of support ICE has received from the administration in terms of carrying out their statutory duties.
The next time that you meet with ICE agents, let me know.
