Quinn’s campaign pokes fun at Rauner silence
Friday, May 30, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller
* Bruce Rauner’s campaign hasn’t issued any official statements or press releases all week. Gov. Pat Quinn’s campaign had a bit of fun today with Rauner’s silence via their own press release…
EXCLUSIVE: A Detailed Day-by-Day Recap of Billionaire Bruce Rauner’s Week of Courage, Ideas, and Transparency
CHICAGO - With yet ANOTHER of his shady equity firm’s concerns in the docket today (this one in Florida bankruptcy court with the nursing home empire accused in multiple wrongful death lawsuits), billionaire Bruce Rauner had a singular week of courage, ideas and transparency.
Even as issues of the day were being debated in Springfield, with Governor Quinn working to pass legislation to protect pregnant women in the workplace and other important bills related to the future of Illinois’ middle class - Rauner chose a decidedly different path.
Below is a detailed and exhaustive recap of all the bold stands Rauner took on issues like protecting pregnant women in the workplace, and a comprehensive look at the details he provided of his OWN budget plan for Illinois, which, to date, has remained hidden from human eyes for 452 days.

So Quinn is goading Rauner to criticize Quinn on a daily basis?

Hey, it worked in 2010.
Does Rauner have a copy of Bill Brady’s secret plan?
- Concerned Voter - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 11:18 am:
I guess Quinn has read Nat Silver’s latest projections and this is the best he can come up with?

Pretty lame to me.
- Southwest Cook - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 11:22 am:
It’s nice to see that the Quinn campaign thinks May press releases are the key to winning elections. “Billionaire Bruce Rauner” does have a nice ring to it. Much more so than “ne’er-do-well Pat Quinn”.
- Langhorne - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 11:22 am:
Weak and tactically dumb for PQ. He has the stage to himself, and the GA to sing backup. Use it.

The Titanic’s sinking and Quinn’s still on stage telling jokes, while his audience is on deck searching for life jackets

Meanwhile, Quinn is still trying to find a lawn boy and still trying to figure out how he will pay his son’s student debt within the next 30 years or so!

Here at ShakeyMitt Rauner HQ we are a little worried that certain unnamed GOPie legislators(who shall remain names, but have initials like Althoff and McConnaghey) will not lie when asked if called on them to kill the County pension bill

Rauner releases plan to use illegal’s working for no more then $5 a day to save money. Vowes to get rid of the pesky middle class and continue the trend of average CEO pay increases. Rauner voes that CEO salaries rises duing an economic collapse from 181 times the average workers salary to 291 times the avergae workers salary is not enough, he will make sure CEO pay is minimally 500 times the average workers salary. Rauner is willing to stay at it until no hungry person has food or sick person has medical care…. looking out at the reporters, Rauner declares, let them eat cake…

This is really sophomoric. I’d rather elect a person as Governor who has been a private sector success than one who has been a private sector failure. Quinn is trying to turn Rauner’s success into a negative! Astounding, and the effort will fail except possibly with the socialists in the Democratic Party.
- 47th Ward - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:19 pm:
Team Quinn deployed its own stalker character ala Quinnochio against Rauner: the Invisible Man. He’s been at all of Rauner’s events passing out copies of Rauner’s budget for the past few weeks.
It’s kind of surprising that nobody’s covered it yet. It’s brilliant. Here’s a photo from a recent Rauner event, check out the guy to his left.

- VanillaMan - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:23 pm:
They are so out of ideas on how to get Quinn reelected, they are down to this.
Please, put together a list of Quinn’s accomplishments, whatever they are, and keep talking about them until November.
This kind of amateur crap makes Quinn’s staff look like they are not excited about their man getting reelected.
Try to be a bit serious while you attempt to tell voters why your guy should be reelected, OK?
- Oswego Willy - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:27 pm:
“This is really sophomoric by Rauner. However, I’d rather elect a person as Governor who has no plan to run government, except for “Hammer and Shake”, than one who has been arguable failure as a leader. Quinn is trying to turn Rauner’s Dopey non-stances into a negative! Astounding, and the effort will work, except possibly with the Raunerbots in the Raunerite Party.”

While I’m not a fan of Rauner, I am voting against Quinn. I cannot support a guy who sold our pensions out!! I may have less to live on but so be it! Quinn does not deserve to be governor.
- Archiesmom - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:45 pm:
If they do their job, by the day of the election the public will think Rauner’s first name is Billionaire.
- Mighty M. Mouse - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:45 pm:
===The history behind that post has some real problems. He should know better. ===
Rich, I’m completely confused. What do you mean by “history”? Are you referring to the poster or Silver, who misread Illinois in the 2010 election?
- Walter Mitty - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:47 pm:
To the Post:
It does not seem smart to do this by PQ. The elected officials, which I think PQ is one, is in session doing the states (Lack of) Business this week. Staying quiet is not only respectful but politically smart by Rauner. He must have a plan. He will have one when the spotlight is only on him… And if it is better than the lack of effort by the super majority this week… Spend money on TV about your plan and how nothing was accomplished. I think it is fitting that this time of year graduates of high schools are doing pranks… Does his PR team know there in their final semester? But, thanks for the laugh… Property tax bills are due soon… Perhaps they should release all the accomplishments that PQ had this week during session?
- Jeff Trigg - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:48 pm:
Are these two guys running for grade school student council or for Governor?
- Walter Mitty - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:53 pm:
Jeff… I said high school…. Thank you for the correction… It is nice out, I was far too generous… Grade school is far better…I apologize.
- Responsa - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 12:55 pm:
I know that Quinn’s team is trying to define Rauner in the public’s eye as nothing more than a rich guy. I also know they’re trying to model the Romney meme. But I don’t sense that it’s all that effective anymore here in this race because most voters already long ago picked up the concept that the Rauners are affluent from the primary campaign. Someone else’s wealth either inherently bothers people or it doesn’t bother them, so Quinn harping on that one thing repetitively is starting to seems kind of tired and desperate. Plus, by a long shot Quinn does not have the personal fan base and level of respect Obama did when he ran against that other rich guy. Quinn will eventually have to up his game and offer voters something a bit more substantial and a tad more serious as a reason to re-elect him.

Any day is a good day for snark.

===What do you mean by “history”?===
Most polls were way off base because they weren’t including all the candidates, including Scott Lee Cohen. Pollsters who did include all the candidates found that Cohen was hurting Brady way more than Quinn. There is no mystery why so many polls were so wrong. Garbage in, garbage out.
- wordslinger - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 1:06 pm:
Meh, none of the staff hijinks have landed a solid punch yet.
In the future, I’d try not to raise wrongful death lawsuits in a humorous context. Really, that’s pretty stupid. You can’t be outraged by it one minute, cracking wise the next.
Also, can we get a moratorium on the outrage over negative campaigning? It’s going to happen. It’s always happened. Everybody’s got their big-boy pants on.
When you complain that your guy is a victim of a negative attack, you make him look weak. Savvy?
- Formerly Known As... - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 1:32 pm:
Is Quinn running for Governor of Illinois or 4th grade class president?
- Formerly Known As... - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 1:40 pm:
== But I don’t sense that it’s all that effective anymore here in this race ==
Also beginning to doubt the effectiveness of this approach, though it’s the only one Quinn can really take.
When team Obama painted Romney as a “rich guy”, they also presented a competent alternative to vote for: the President. In Illinois, you cannot successfully pretend Quinn is a competent leader. Therefore, people are left to conclude for themselves “At least the rich guy knows how to run something successfully. Maybe he can stop this train and at least get things turned around, because the current guy obviously can’t.”
- Soccermom - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 2:42 pm:
47th, I think it’s kind of meta that no one has noticed the Invisible Man.
- Soccermom - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 2:46 pm:
Ah. Perhaps I should have checked out the photo. I thought they were doing this: http://barbwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/invisibleman-mage-t0qjq4.jpg
47th, you are a funny man. And perhaps someday I will stop objecting when someone tells me that the word “gullible” is not in the dictionary….
- 47th Ward - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 3:30 pm:
Thanks Soccermom. I was beginning to think it was held in moderation.
Invisible Man! Get it? Apparently no one got it. This is a tough crowd.

Classic. I think I saw that on Son of Svenghoulie once or twice. Good stuff!
- Precinct Captain - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 4:01 pm:
To be fair to 538, Silver calls the 2010 race here, “probably the biggest general election polling blunder of the past six years,” but for different reasons than you Rich.
Also, I’m surprised so many people are jumping on this press release as if there was serious intent behind it. It’s a little Friday fun. You Raunerbots are so tightly wound. Go have a little fun at one of Brucie’s mansions. Oh wait, you probably don’t meet the income cutoff to be invited.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 4:07 pm:
- 47th Ward -, - Soccermom -, enjoying the back and forth, and to your joke - 47th Ward -, I did enjoy it. Nothing like a fortuitous photographer getting that right shot, just a shame the invisible man blinked just then!
Good stuff, thanks you guys for a Friday laugh.
- Regnad Kcin - Friday, May 30, 14 @ 5:15 pm:
Unfortunately, the press release is emblematic of this administration’s approach to running government, i.e., let’s be cute/smug and call our opponent names. I also find it funny that people are all over Rauner for not disclosing a plan yet where were these same people when the Governor said he was put on this earth to solve the pension crisis but then said that it was up to the General Assembly to give him something rather than making his own proposal. I’m not big on Rauner but Quinn’s ineptitude may end up doing him in.
