Tale of two LG candidates: One on a short leash, the other unleashed

Thursday, Jun 19, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As pretty much everyone knows, Paul Vallas loves to talk. But the Quinn campaign is refusing to allow him to talk about his favorite subject. From that Dan Mihalopoulos piece I quoted earlier today

[A] spokeswoman for the Quinn-Vallas campaign declined repeated requests for an interview about his time in New Orleans, Philadelphia and elsewhere.

Mihalopoulos went even further on the Sun-Times website

“Vallas now in his return to IL politics as a Lieutenant Governor candidate has been, from the perspective of a lot of us in the media, as very subdued, almost shackled by the campaign. We don’t see a lot of him, he’s even taken another job in the private sector as we’ve reported, and on this issue I called the press secretary for Quinn’s campaign and she said that they wouldn’t want Vallas talking about charter schools or really giving any interview on that topic.”

Audio

* Meanwhile, remember our funny little story the other day about how Republican lieutenant governor nominee Evelyn Sanguinetti kept saying of Bruce Rauner, “I will be able to make decisions in his stead”?

Well, this is the Rauner campaign’s explanation

“What Evelyn meant is that she and Bruce will be totally in sync that she could walk into any meeting and clearly represent his views on any given issue,” Schrimpf said.

Ah. Ok. That explains everything.

* And speaking of Sanguinetti

What’s the secret to securing votes and campaign success? “Magical” women. At least that’s what Bruce Rauner’s running mate Evelyn Sanguinetti believes.

At an event earlier this month hosted by the Palatine Township Republican Organization, Sanguinetti talked about her passion for serving Republican women and a woman’s “magical” and “special powers.”

Her full quote…

“I have two passions in life. One of my passions is serving Republican women. I’m one of the vice presidents for the Illinois Federation of Republican Women. I don’t know if I have any sisters out there and my mission is to empower women. No offense to the guys, but to let them know that something special happens when we promote our candidates because when we knock on doors, something magical happens. What happens? What happens when we knock on doors as women? They let us in! And this is where we use our special powers to disarm, right, and talk about our candidates. So that’s my first passion.”

If Money Can’t Buy Billionaire Bruce The Election, Maybe Magic? Right-Wing Ticket More Out Of Touch Than Anyone Thought

“Slip and Sue” is now Tinkerbell?

    “Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust”?

Is her second passion Personal Injury lawsuits?

Cousin Brucey better call Pat and find out where he buys his muzzles and put one on her pretty quick.

Great contrast here: Dem. Lt. Gov. candidate of ideas vs. Rep. candidate with no idea.

==that she and Bruce will be totally in sync that she could walk into any meeting and clearly represent his views on any given issue,”==

Does that mean she clearly knows what Bruce’s views are? Perhaps she could share them with us since Bruce won’t.

One candidate is MIA and the other apparently resides in Fantasyland.

Now we know why “Slip and Sue” can’t speak for herself. What should scare all of us is that “Slip and Sue” doesn’t think she speaks for Rauner, she is “Governor Pro Tem”…

I feel sick for Rauner’s Crew having a loose cannon, but I feel absolutely ill if Illinois gets “LG Slip and Sue” and her magic and her brand of Banana Republic governing.

well at least she can’t see Russia from Wheaton. yet.

  8. - OneMan - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:23 pm:

A Lt. Governor candidate full of ideas who isn’t allowed to share those ideas…

Then again a Lt. Governor is a lot like residents of Oak Brook who drive Range Rovers..

It’s nice, but completely irrelevant to what they are needed for.

All those more so when your Lt. Gov candidate has a lot of ideas that will completely tick off the one group you might be able to convince you are better pick than the other guy for.

The Dem. Lt. Gov. candidate can’t or won’t talk about them? He ducked answering Flannery’s questions on the budget following the Flannery rant. He blamed everyone who was not a Democrat or governor for the current pathetic state of the just passed budget. I didn’t see teachers unions wildly supporting him during his run for governor.

Or is the truly magical moment Vallas’ silence? Who would have expected him to be THAT silent during this campaign?

  11. - MrJM (@MisterJayEm) - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:25 pm:

    No worries, Illinois.

A lieutenant governor hasn’t taken the reigns of power in more than five years.

  12. - Precinct Captain - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:39 pm:

So is she pro-choice as Bruce Rauner allegedly is? Will she be able to represent those views? I don’t think so, but if she is able to represent Rauner’s views on reproductive rights, it will be because he is as radical as she is, all while lying about to the public as his late friend Jack Roeser asserted.

    Brilliant Joe M.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:43 pm:

Does this also mean Rauner is a conservative all of a sudden?

  15. - LincolnLounger - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:44 pm:

She’s going to make Corinne Wood look low maintenance. Good luck, pal.

=== Then again a Lt. Governor is a lot like residents of Oak Brook who drive Range Rovers..

Then again the relevant thing is there qualifications to effectively run the state should the big guy go bye bye. The guy with the ideas has them, the clueless one doesn’t.

Then again, it’s a moot point since I know you really don’t care because you’re for Raunervich and expect him to fill out his term.

  18. - Wensicia - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:52 pm:

Did she use those “special powers” to convince Rauner she was the best choice for Lt Gov? Maybe she’s got something there…or the people she associates with are incredibly gullible.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:53 pm:

Where o’ where are those commenting even a week ago that I know nothing about “Slip and Sue”

What, the more they are finding out, their defense seems utterly insane?

They must have forgotten the virtues of her “magic”?

  20. - Hit or Miss - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:54 pm:

===they wouldn’t want Vallas talking about charter schools or really giving any interview on that topic.===

For a candidate for public office not wanting to talk about events in his recent past and not wanting to talk about his field of expertise is something of a ‘red flag’ to me. I wonder why he, or the campaign, is not willing to answer reporters questions?

  21. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 1:57 pm:

Corinne Wood meant well, got caught up in it, and that was that.

Jason Plummer had ideas of gradure, and sneaking in by winning a primary on Dad’s cash, but in the end, wasn’t even an empty suit.

“Slip and Sue” not only is not qualified, she thinks that she will be Co-Governor, although I looked at that pesky constitution and see no job described as such, and plans to fill in “as needed” and push her beliefs too, as we have no clue what Bruce stands for…

    She is dangerous…

You betcha, Team Sleep. You betcha.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:22 pm:

Maybe “Slip and Sue” is a Hufflepuff; she can’t be a Slytherin or Griffindor…

Hufflepuff, with all her magic, and I bet Lord Voldemort himself will say “Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti is the most talented of all the LGs…

  28. - walker - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:23 pm:

Jill Tracy was the right LtGov candidate for Rauner.

    They both miscalculated.

  29. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:31 pm:

I liked Jil Tracy for LG a lot.

By far the most qualified to take over Illinois…

    If need be!

This idea that Evelyn will step in, then backtracked by Rauner’s Crew has to make you wonder,

“Did Bruce Rauner and Crew vet Evelyn and were ‘ok’ with her craziness, did the vet Evelyn, in hopes that no one will find out she’s insane, all the while knew how she was, or Evelyn was the only “yes” to the offer, and they all just ran with it before she said no.”

Speaks volumes to that well-funded campaign, albeit not very well run(?)

  30. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:39 pm:

Maybe Bruce is doing all of us a favor by living in the mansion?

Can’t go to Montana or Manhattan, to Florida or even overseas…

Living in the mansion might be the best insurance policy that “Slip and Sue” coup ideas will not see the light of day.

I still say, send her overseas, in other states, national conferences, anything that keeps “Gov. Rauner” safe, and not fearing all this Co-Governor “thingy”.

    She teaches…law…right? Law professor?

  32. - Centennial - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:50 pm:

On first read, I find her comments offensive. Am I being too sensitive? She seems to be implying that ladies should use their feminine guiles (a.k.a. magical powers) to get a head in politics. Not exactly the kind of fodder I want spewing from my female leaders. BFC has “magical powers” too. It’s called hard work and dedication.

Insane??? In a list of completely moronic proclamations by you, this one is the most moronic.
I’ll be happy to defend her ability, her intelligence and her willingness to be a loyal soldier to the top of her ticket. You and that statement are defenseless, tactless and clueless. Most of your drivel is just drivel. Calling her “insane” is offensive. Buck up coward.

  34. - The Prince - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:54 pm:

The Lieutenant Governor is the only Constitutional Office that remains vacant in the event of a vacancy. Dave O’Neal quit and Bob Kustra was going to until Gov. Edgar had quadruple bypass surgery. My point is, what’s the point?

  35. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 2:56 pm:

(A knock at the door, Evelyn enters, immediately)

Speaker Madigan: Evelyn, hello. Usually guest wait to be welcomed in…

Slip & Sue: Speaker, I need these Bills out of the Ruling Committee and passed.

    SM: Ev,

    S&S: (interrupts) Governor

SM: (firmly) Ev, (pauses) have a seat. Coffee?

(Slip and Sue ignores SM and pulls out of her purse a small zip-lock baggy with gold sparkles clearly visible)

SM: Ev? What are you doing?

(S&S walks over and takes nolote than a pinch between her index finger and thumb and blows those sparkles on SM)

    SM: What the!

S&S: (triumphantly) Now…(sits) Speaker Madigan (looks into SM’s eyes thinking she has him in a trance) you will get the Bills I want out of that Ruling Committee and get them to me at my desk to sign before Bruce gets back from Carbondale, or I will keep you in this trance for all time.

(SM leans back, reaches for his phone, looking at S&S the entire time)

SM: Jesse, can you send 4 of your Statehouse Guards to my office? …yes…and a straight jacket…fine…the back entrance… of course…(hangs up) Brown! (Brown enters) see that the Governor here, and her fairy dust leave quietly…

    S&S: But…but I used the dust.

SM: (leans in real close to S&S, looks her in her eyes, whispers) Do you think you are the only one who believes in magic? Why do you think I eat an apple a day? Apples offset your dust. (Looks at Brown, acknowledging he is toying with S&S, and walks out)

    And … scene…

When you feel you are done railing on me, you get to that defense of ole “Slip and Sue”

I stand by my comments, always have.

Her quotes and the realities of the Office, and the wkbsck by the Campaign seems to me to say, “Yeah, she was a lil out there…”

Your defense should be exciting and thrilling, considering the Campaign walked this back to stop all the “fairy dust” yapping and 3rd World, Banana Republic takeovers when Slip and Sue feels she “needs” to step in…

So, you got your point about me all out there, where is this LG who is really “up to the task”, fairy dust and all…

Yes, since Cantor’s debacle. Rauner has to become more conservative simply to get GOP to come out to vote.

  41. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 3:14 pm:

    A guy,
Don’t bother trying to defend Evelyn with some. The DGA are out to make Evelyn look like a hybrid of Palin/O’Donnell/Bachmann, and Rauner haters are all to happy to oblige.

For instance, looking above we already have the Latina candidate painted as “crazy” “dangerous” engaged in witchcraft, and being a power hungry you know what. If your opponents are engaged in name calling, you are winning.

  42. - OneMan - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 3:17 pm:

  44. - Bill White - Thursday, Jun 19, 14 @ 3:20 pm:

===For instance, looking above we already have the Latina candidate===

We playing the “ethnic” card? Besides you, where is her Latina background?

===painted as “crazy” “dangerous” engaged in witchcraft===

Crazy and insane in her complete lack of Illinois government knowledge, and her own interpretation, which was walked back by the campaign, is not feasible, and the campaign had to explain a direct quote of her beliefs. The fairly dust and magic is a play on her statement. It’s humor.

===and being a power hungry you know what.===

No, what? What do you mean? Gender card?

===If your opponents are engaged in name calling, you are winning.===

If your opponents can strike down your fantasy of working with your Co-Governor with quotes from their own campaign to do it, you’re losing…

Evelyn has a full schedule every day. She’s worked much harder and longer for her guy than Jil or any of the others even tried to do. She’s obviously getting accustomed to more scrutiny. I doubt she would notice or care what Willie thinks or says. A lot of people are trying to make her look bad by parsing every word. Fine. Goes with the territory. They all have some element of that. I’m sure on reflection she wishes she used different expressions when the “gotcha” crowd is out there. As a female who’s gone knocking on doors to talk to voters and someone who knows males who have done the same thing, I can say that she’s talking about how much easier it is for women to get people to answer the door and talk about the issues. Most guys just get doors slammed in their faces and people are a lot ruder/unwilling to give you the time of the day. Going door to door and talking with voters is crucial to any campaign and so thats the “magic” she was talking about that women have.
