*** UPDATE *** Bost campaign response…

Enyart says “he has helped Scott Air Force Base grow.”

The Facts Beltway Bill Doesn’t Want You To Know:

-Nearly 3,500 workers will be laid off in the next five years at Scott Air Force Base. Enyart was also absent for a crucial vote for military construction and appropriations.

-Enyart has also turned his back on Illinois Veterans after voting “NO” on a resolution that would have kept military chaplains working during the government shutdown.

-Illinois Veterans have asked Enyart to apologize. One month later, they’re still waiting. Click here to read Veteran’s letter.

Enyart says he is a “supporter of clean coal.”

The Facts Beltway Bill Doesn’t Want You To Know:

-Enyart voted against “The Preventing Government Waste and Protecting Coal Mining Jobs in America Act,” (H.R. 2824) and also voted against hard-working Illinois coal miners.

-Enyart also continues his anti-energy record by voting against prohibiting the Obama Administration from conducting its anti-fossil fuel agenda.

    “B-”,

Simple in concept, good, but some of the camera angles seemed too “smart”, and too much defining of how the buzz words relate to Enyart.

Lots of room to get to an A, but above the Gentleman’s “C”

  2. - Hyperbolic Chamber - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 12:52 pm:

Needs to find a combination of serious and likeable. Got the serious down pat. The other? Not so much. C-.

  3. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 12:54 pm:

I’m not in the media market(s), so I won’t see it, but it’s best to judge these things on TV. A lot of us thought Quinn’s last ad was garbage, but it works well if you see it on TV.

  4. - New 42nd - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 12:55 pm:

    Who is this?

C+. He looks odd, like his head is oddly shaped from the angles as per Oswego …..

  5. - North Central Southern Illinois - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 12:59 pm:

Depends on the buy if this makes any splash in this race. Defining himself early is smart but this moves a little fast for the Southern Illinois market but is great for Metro-East. So depends on buy. …..

Plus and minus?! Grow up people.

Less is more? …. Or not enough is stupid?

  7. - Winning with Sheen - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:03 pm:

    C-. Bordering on not enough.

  8. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:10 pm:

The somber narration and music are kind of a downer, don’t you think? I would have gone for something a bit more upbeat and positive sounding, probably use a female voice too.

    B+
Military + coal = victory (dems and repubs in SE IL)

  10. - too obvious - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:13 pm:

Mike Bost’s ability to throw papers around during a hissy fit obviously makes him better qualified than this former General.

  11. - StraightOuttaCobden - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:17 pm:

A+, this is a great ad!

  12. - Kathy - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:27 pm:

Its discouraging to watch Mr. Enyart take credit for things he had absolutely nothing to do with.

  13. - votecounter - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:41 pm:

The problem is his party Hates Coal! And the voters that care about it know it too.

  14. - Responsa - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 1:54 pm:

I don’t know enough about what’s going on in his district to gauge if that’s an effective approach to take or not. That said, it seemed kind of boring and is very very low key. But at the same time he looks dignified and serious about his business. Sooo?

  15. - John A Logan - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:02 pm:

D+ It reintroduces his general credentials, but the music is better suited for a funeral then a campaign spot. Blago’s General can do better.

  16. - Team Sleep - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:03 pm:

He looks like he’s getting ready to beat someone up.

  17. - downstate hack - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:05 pm:

LOw key but effective A “B” grade.

  18. - Mokenavince - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

I liked it gave it an A. How could you be against cleaner coal.

  19. - anon - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:42 pm:

up on aug 20th??–his flood/levee credentails might come in handy when the tide comes in..

  20. - Empty Suit - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 2:55 pm:

C- Geesh dude crack a smile looks like your ready to bark out orders.

  21. - walker - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 3:06 pm:

Very strong on his qualifications and his links to both the community and his country. In an unemotional comparison, and he’s ahead.

Could be a bit more exciting in tone, even with him.

A- In normal times this would work.

If there is enough anger and anxiety in the district, Bost’s histrionics and championing the downtrodden could win the day. It depends on the local mood.

  22. - D.P.Gumby - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 5:57 pm:

looks solid and he looks like the grown-up in the room. B

  23. - Under Influenced... - Tuesday, Aug 19, 14 @ 9:21 pm:

Odd camera angels. Can see the mic in his back pocket on the levee shot. Music selection to slow and somber. Pretty depressing while delivering a message.

Looks DC made to me. Should have stayed local.

  24. - A guy - Wednesday, Aug 20, 14 @ 7:32 am:

It’s a pass, but not a great one. The biggest issue in the district is “coal”. It’s buried in the spot, barely mentioned. Can’t hide the bacon on these folks. If I were Bost, I’d pound him with a whole spot devoted to coal.

  25. - dr. reason a. goodwin - Wednesday, Aug 20, 14 @ 9:25 pm:

I don’t coal is even close to being the top issue in Southern Illinois. Jobs that pay a livable wage would be the top issue, but I think most residents have stopped thinking coal will rebound. That hope is now being put into fracking, which I would rank at number two. Taxes is number three, but it cuts both ways with the large number of public employees pulling for a permanent income tax so pensions won’t be threatened. Second amendment would be next.

But, of course North Central might think this has all gone by me too fast.
