A Rickey Hendon special
Tuesday, Sep 9, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller * This ad for aldermanic candidate Gabe Beukinga that slams Ald. Walter Burnett is appearing on African-American radio. As the title of this piece suggests, it’s a familiar style for longtime blog readers. And, of course, it’s a must-listen, even if an actor actually portrays the former state Senator in the spot…

That is awesome. Reminds me of the radio ads that Bill Shaw ran against James Meeks.
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:57 pm:
“You been here too long.”
Loved it.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:00 pm:
I listened to this 10 minutes ago and I can still hear “bye bye Walter Burnett” over and over in my head.
- Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:04 pm:
Hooray for Hollywood!
- Been There - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:06 pm:
I like Walter and hope he wins. But I miss me some Rickey in Springfield.

“Catfish Corner”? “You’ve been here too long.”
This is great.
- Belle - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:09 pm:
It’s a perfect radio ad. 47th Ward is right—the ditty plays over and over in your head. Will it play in people’s head on voting day and get them to the polls? Only time will tell.
- Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:09 pm:
One hopes the actor portraying Mr. Hendon was dressed in an equally respectable suit.
- Big Muddy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:11 pm:
That’s awesome. Fun ad that will most definitely leave a mark!
- MrJM - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:14 pm:
Other people had their doubts when George Clinton announced a concept album about municipal elections, but I knew P-Funk could pull it off.

- Dirty Red - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:20 pm:
I just….I just can’t, you guys.

Rickey’s been too busy singing to act?
- bored now - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:25 pm:
a little early. must have lots of money. they haven’t even turned in petitions yet…
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:26 pm:
MrJM’s comment is one more reason why I think I’ll be nominating him for the Golden Horseshoe this year.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:26 pm:
Man, I love this.
I would love to get all those Ads on a loop and just play them. I miss Rickey.

===Rickey’s been too busy singing to act? ===
He is in the middle of softball playoffs.
- Abraham Froman - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:31 pm:
Hollywood Hendon uses a voice over actor?!? I like Burnett and am not sure what he did to get these folks against him, but the spot seems effective if only for the catchy jingle.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:39 pm:
I’ll second that Rich. Comsistently sharp and always funny. At first I thought it was MJM, but then the Speaker could never be that funny.
- Give Me A Break - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:50 pm:
Man I miss Ricky.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 5:26 pm:
- MrJM - is just flat out genius-funny. The references and snark are restaurant quality.
His twitter feed is just as good.
Now Rickey, this is the stuff I miss most, and savor it more when it comes around.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 7:05 pm:
Election law regulates how close you can stand to the polls, but not how loud your stereo is.
It would be a nice ringtone.
But I doubt Burnett leaves that easily.
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 10:14 pm:
Finally some professionalism this election cycle.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 12:29 am:
I didn’t post Rickey’s email, but I probably should’ve…
I miss that guy so much.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 12:41 am:
Rickey Hendon is a rare breed that doesn’t disappoint, and that email is as raw as it’s epic, and it’s Rickey.
Thanks for sharing the note.

- train111 - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 8:15 am:
Good ad. It is catchy and will stick.
I think I am one of the very few ’suburban white guys’ who has ever been to “Catfish Corner”
- Give Me A Break - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 8:16 am:
And no one, I mean no one, could get the Senate moving on get away day like Ricky. He took no prisoners, if you wern’t ready when your bill was called, too bad and tough luck see ya on Tuesday. And Ricky during the last couple days of session in May was a sight to behold.
- Steve - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 8:38 am:
Great commercial.

That is a keeper, and is as unique as the man it touts.
- austinman - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 9:21 am:
Great ad but Rickey must have memory loss, he too has backed white candidates over black ones. Pucinski over stroger, anyone but obama, Rickey.has never liked Walter and now he’s using this opportunity for payback, hey it is what it is but…. its going to be a fun campaign to watch.
