*** UPDATED x2 - “Sit up straight” *** Rauner campaign: “Quinn needs help during IL gov debate”

Tuesday, Sep 9, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Rauner campaign…

In case you weren’t watching this morning’s Chicago Tribune Editorial Board Debate, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn was unable to complete the debate without multiple incidents of staff passing him notes and whispering in his ear. Here’s one example caught on camera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sai06pWsWMg&feature=youtu.be#aid=P3NZURdtn4A.

Some of you may remember a similar incident in the Florida gubernatorial race back in 2010:

Aide fired over Florida debate foul
    By the CNN Political Unit
    October 26, 2010 1:36 p.m. EDT

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/10/26/florida.debate.foul/index.html

Tampa, Florida (CNN) — A campaign aide to Florida gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink has been removed after the Democratic nominee was sent a text message during a televised debate — in violation of the rules that the candidates agreed to.

Sink’s campaign did not name the advisor. But a campaign spokesman confirmed it was Brian May, who signed the rules agreement before the Monday evening debate.

The incident took place at the CNN/St. Petersburg Times Florida gubernatorial debate when Sink’s make-up artist delivered a two-sentence message on a cell phone during a break.

Republican nominee Rick Scott, who was sitting next to Sink in the nationally televised debate, noticed the violation and notified a CNN official. The CNN official approached the make-up artist and Sink, and confiscated the cell phone.

The message read: “The attorney who [w]on the Sykes suit said alex sink did nothing wrong. Tell not to let him keep talking about her.”

* There were no such rules during today’s debate, but here’s the video

He’s the governor, so he ought to be able to debate his opponent without any help.

*** UPDATE 1 *** I just spoke with Brooke Anderson, who’s the person above whispering in Quinn’s ear. Anderson said all of her notes she passed, all of her whispers were to tell the governor one thing and one thing only: “Sit up straight.”

Apparently, the governor has a bad habit of slouching, which doesn’t look good on TV.

*** UPDATE 2 *** From the Rauner campaign

Yikes.

Bad optics certainly, and doing that right in front of the Trib. editorial board, who are not likely to be friendly anyway? Bad, bad decision-making there.

I would prefer to hear from the candidate during a debate than his handlers.

Especially when that candidate is already the Governor and should have a good grasp of these things.

That kinda looks like Willy with a wig giving the Gov his sage advice.

Maybe Quinn would be an OK mayor of a medium-sized suburb. He is a terrible candidate. That said, he is running against someone with much less grasp of how the political and governmental worlds work. It’s a binary choice.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

===That kinda looks like Willy with a wig giving the Gov his sage advice.===

I don’t wear my wig that way, think Cousin It from the Addams Family.

After watching that debate Willy, the Governor is probably wishing you were whispering in his ear.

  8. - Mason born - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:09 pm:

Ouch. PQ really should have known better. PQ’s whole arguement is BR is out of touch and can’t be trusted to govern. Nothing seems more out of touch than having your staff tell you what to say in a live debate. I can see the add now PQ is so incompetent his staff has to debate for him.

  9. - Then again... - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:11 pm:

“Sit up straight” if I’m not mistaken. Kind of a weird decision on her part. She’s worried about how he looks (not sure why, didn’t seem to be slouching or anything), but not worried about looking like he’s being handled.

===He’s the governor, so he ought to be able to debate his opponent without any help.====
While I agree it was bad optics, I would rather that he give a correct answer rather than just making things up. Rauner doesn’t need anyone telling him the answers because he doesn’t say anything anyway.

Trib’s fault–mouthpieces shouldn’t have been in the room

I think Rauner should be able to run for governor without any prep from staff or reliance on outside policy groups.

    Very odd mistake.

== “Sit up straight.” She’s worried about how he looks (not sure why, didn’t seem to be slouching or anything), but not worried about looking like he’s being handled. ==

Yeah, that is kind of weird.

  17. - Western Ave. Doug - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:16 pm:

If she said “sit up straight” then he obviously didn’t listen. Also, let’s see the notes then.

  18. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:16 pm:

Hard to impress when you have to rely upon staff backup.

Rauner slides by with making it up as he goes.

  19. - Western Ave. Doug - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:18 pm:

Maybe Brooke blocked access to her Twitter so much so that she had to resort to writing notes for the Governor to pay attention.

  20. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:18 pm:

I have no problem with spokespeople being in the room. They need to know what was said so they can deal with anything said if necessary. After the debate is over, not during. They should be prohibited in the debate rules from communicating with and/or signalling the candidates upon penalty of removal though.

  21. - Wally - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:20 pm:

Yeah right Brooke. I’m sure that is what you are telling him. Yep!

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:22 pm:

===After watching that debate Willy, the Governor is probably wishing you were whispering in his ear.===

It’s not the advice that may be lacking, it could very well be the person not heeding it apropriately.

“You ate all the crackers last week, remember?”

“The water is free, you aren’t doing the stunt anymore.”

“Speaker Madigan had someone email me, siad you’ll be fine”

“Can you believe that Diana and Evelyn picked that suit for Bruce?”

“Paul promised not to upstage you or make you look foolish, so he’ll be just sitting there during this part.”

“I wouldn’t go to any Fenwick football games for a while.”

“Hey. HEY! You throw me under that bus like the others, you won’t like how it’s gonna end…”

“Easy on throwing people under the bus, those tires are already retreads.”

  23. - Harry - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:22 pm:

If he needs to be reminded by a staffer to sit up and look awake, that’s even worse than if he needs help with some obscure policy point or statistic.

Sheeesh, how did we come to this? Oh, we elected him, now I remember.

    “…and eat your vegetables.”

  25. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:23 pm:

Brooke shoulda used a remote control taser attached to the governor’s back. Snap him right back up when he started to fold.

  26. - Sir Reel - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:26 pm:

It would’ve worked better if there was a hole in Quinn’s back with levers and strings a la Charlie McCarthy.

  27. - Mason born - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:28 pm:

Assuming Brooke is being honest, isn’t the optics of her giving advice to the Governor during the debate much worse than him slouching?? Especially once this becomes an ad on tv.

  28. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:28 pm:

You’re not the show, Brooke. Next time, get out of the shot and clam up.

    Egomaniac.

  29. - Downstate - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:28 pm:

Over-the-top staff activity … that undermines her boss.

  30. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:30 pm:

If that’s true, interesting calculation — which looks worse, a candidate slouching during a debate or a candidate that appears to be being coached during a debate?

  31. - PolPal56 - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:31 pm:

Sheesh. Buy him one of those posture harnesses for this sort of thing, then.

  33. - Robert the Bruce - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

Dumb move by Anderson to become part of the show, and I wonder if she’s lying now about it. I find it very hard to believe that she’d pass him multiple notes and whisper in his ear the same “Sit up straight” message. If she was so worried about how he appeared on tv, surely she knew that she’d be in the shot?

  34. - Raymond - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

=== Assuming Brooke is being honest ===

I have a hard time believing that her counsel related strictly to the governor’s posture. She made a point of whispering in his ear on at least two separate occasions and, in a third instance, passed him a note. And yet the governor continued to slouch.

As Wordslinger said, she is not the show - she needs to recognize that. By jumping straight into the show, she is only hurting her own candidate.

  35. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:35 pm:

“Next time, get out of the shot and clam up.”

And perhaps wear a more demure outfit if in camera range.

  36. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 12:35 pm:

With that move, Brooke showed she had no confidence in Pat Quinn.

    agree with wordslinger.
Try to find a photo of the Governor at an event where she’s not in the frame.

And I should add that she should’ve worn a longer dress…

== What does her dress have to do with anything? ==

Likely the same thing it has to do for any person, male or female, dressing appropriately for any setting. Whether it be the beach, a funeral, or a debate.

  58. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:22 pm:

While Quinn might have been slouching, Rauner’s budget plan and his defense of it was doubled over. It completely lacked a spine.

Really, Harry, you think a slouch is worse than an “obscure policy point” that can cause billions of dollars of budget damage? Don’t you care about the taxpayers?

  59. - Walter Mitty - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:28 pm:

Bash Bruce. But it’s the Gov who has been in charge of this mess. Where’s his ideas? Oh, we have seen them… As I said months ago…PQ’s team is trying out for the future Gov… How many of these instances must I point out for proof? Please hold, my new tinfoil hat is sending a new message.

  60. - Gooner - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:34 pm:

I’m glad Brooke finally listened to my advice.

Quinn does that all that time and it looks miserable.

He slouches walking into a room. He slouches at the podium. He just does not look like a leader.

While it was a poor decision to tell him during the event, he should learn the lesson.

Many on here have been blogging about candidate Evelynn sanguinetti, bashing “slip and suit”, the only thing I have to say in her credit was she didn’t need an aid telling her answers on four occasions!
Pat Quinn really is big in appetite and thin on intellect.

  66. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:49 pm:

I have no problem with the way she was dressed, Mad Brown. Some do. You may or may not. None of it has anything to do with the topic at hand.

You asked a question and seemed to be having trouble understanding that, so I took the time to answer your question in hopes it might help you understand and get back to following the broader conversation taking place.

OK, the next person to focus on Brooke’s dress is gonna get banned.

    Move the heck along.

There is a legit discussion about the limits of staff intervention here. Keep it that way.

  68. - Big Muddy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:53 pm:

I always thought it was MJM that told Quinn what to say. Now that I know it’s Brooke it makes his ineptitude that much more understandable.

===Many on here have been blogging about candidate Evelynn sanguinetti, bashing “slip and suit”, the only thing I have to say in her credit was she didn’t need an aid telling her answers on four occasions!===

    1) its “Slip and Sue”… Slip. And. Sue. If you are going to mock it, give it courtesy before cutting it down.

    2) Slip and Sue said she working with Diana (Bruce’s preferred prop female in Ads) to help Bruce dress.

You don’t need anyone helping you to say something so Dopey, that the only thing that she said worse… was she was “an attorney speaking with facts” (Attorneys don’t speak with facts?) and that she is 4′ 11′ …

Slip and Sue’s own Dopiness, and unqualified disaster is beyond help, even if it’s four whispers, lol

  70. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 1:55 pm:

This is why the Tribune format is dumb imo. This is the televised non-televised debate. No way does a staffer even think about whispering in their boss’ ear if they have to walk over to the podium on stage. Why the candidates allow the Tribune to do this to them I’ll never understand. If they are going to live stream it, then everything needs to be negotiated including podiums, lighting, backdrop, etc. It’s either about the video or it isn’t. They both look small in this and why the running mates were there is still a mystery to me.

The Tribune doesn’t have that kind of clout anymore. Sad to see the candidates empowering their ego trip.

If you are under her Spell, her Magic will point out how qualified ole Slip and Sue is to running the 5th Largest State in America, if need be.

And, “if need be” is the only job the LG has, she ain’t qualified…

Her “height, job, fashion sense” were put on dislplay, by her, as to what Slip and Sue brings to Illinois.

She was breathtakingly inept today … all on her own.

Are we participating in a new reality show called Campaign Goofs? These kiddie campaigners are embarrassing.

Sounds like opinion to me. You hate Rauner, for reasons all your own, and in the legal world you would not be a credible witness. Perhaps the hatred stems from the fact that Rauner never threw any of that campaign cash your way by hiring you.

  76. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:21 pm:

Why would she tell him to stop doing something he’s so good at?

  77. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:27 pm:

==She was breathtakingly inept today … all on her own.==

She was asked how she would help, she said she and Diana Rauner are helping with what Bruce wears.

Slip and Sue said that, not me.

I ding Mike Frerichs constantly on the Dopey height stuff, ask around. Slip and Sue has to say she’s 4′11″ … why? Why is that relevant? It’s not.

    “I’m an attorney, I speak facts…

So… doctors don’t speak facts? Teachers? Dishwasher repairmen?

Ypu want to make the case for ole Slip and Sue, fire away. Use the “search key” I’ve cataloged her utter unfitness for leading Illinois, but if you want a shot at dispelling it, go ahead.

Someone used Slip and sue as a prop to take on Quinn, and the help, I made a point, snarky and fun, but if all she brings to a debate is height, job, elite retort to her job, and fashion sense … that is on her and you to dispell that, not me.

Also, I have cataloged why I am not a Rauner guy, search that too. “You’re welcome.”

  78. - Fair & Balanced - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:28 pm:

    hey willy…
again at least no one had to whisper into her ear four times, and no one definitely had to whisper into Rauners ear.

so ok just admit it, Quinn loses lots of points here for poor preparedness at best, why not accept and learn from this and move on.

oh…and sorry for the wrong wording format, if Quinn loses perhaps you can find alternate patronage employment as an editor somewhere

I don’t work for Quinn, I have nothing to do with Quinn, I am a Republican, who refuses to “be quiet” and let Rauner and the Rauerites think being the GOP versionof Blago is good.

===Your friend Evelyn can’t wait to make decisions in Bruce’s stead on your behalf. :) ===

The specialist I see at the clinic to get my Plummer meds said Slip and Sue could cure me with her Magic, or I need to reduce my dosage and begin meditating or yoga.

Yeah, I checked, that is how worried I am!

At times I feel I am fighting off the Tesseract in “A Wrinkle in Time”

  85. - fair and balanced - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:49 pm:

wily you are small minded…to label me is to negate me.

you are displaying your great command of the English language… DO YOU NEED SOMEONE TO WHISPER A RESPONSE IN YOUR EAR?

I wonder if your definition would not have served to better “define Quinn” today?

    the definition of dope:
    dope noun \ˈdōp\

: an illegal drug (such as marijuana or heroin)

: a stupid or annoying person

    Do Not Feed Tolls.

  87. - fair and balanced - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:54 pm:

ironic.. as I recall Quinn also noted today on approximately 6 occasions did not like “being called names” today

  88. - Western Ave. Doug - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:54 pm:

    Willy,
Just to drive you more crazy, your party has named Evelyn a “rising star.” Guess even the national GOP disagrees with you.

    http://www.gop.com/general/rnc-announces-four-new-rising-stars/

  89. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:57 pm:

    - Western Ave. Doug -

When Jason ran for Congress and he was a “Young Gun”, that only required bed rest. Slip and Sue and her silence was seen in full display today; the more she says, the more Dopey she sounds.

  90. - Jaded - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 2:59 pm:

He doesn’t slouch when he mows his lawn. Maybe he should give up politics and go into landscaping.

  91. - Norseman - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

Someone needs to tell Brooke, “you’re not helping.”

  92. - walker - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:05 pm:

As long as she wasn’t adjusting his hidden earphone.

    Bad form.

  93. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:15 pm:

    - Norseman -, If i haven’t said so, you are running a heck of a Staff and the Crew is exceeding all my expectations. You all, are making me work even harder … today … and through Election Day!

    To Brooke/the Update,

Let’s just say, it was just to say, “Don’t slouch” or whatever language to reinforce to Quinn to sit up straight… let’s give all the doubt in the world to that premise…

If you are going to get caught passing notes, make them impactful and helpful in the moment of the discussion and the debate.

Admitting its a posture thing, how superficial can you be to be cuaght “helping”… about posture.

Yeah, its just as bad if she gave labor stats, or unemployment numbers, Bills signed … becuase, in reality, Quinn wasn’t owning Rauner on the issues, but we are all worried about posture?

Remember, that is taking, 100%, the truth of what the “help” was.

If itwasn’t that, and was helping in issues, a double fail, because if you are going to help, it better be a grand slam home run to win game 7 of the World Series help.

Reality? Both “helping” reasons, didn’t put away Rauner, and not helping, wasn’t going to knoock out Quinn… if we believe 100% it was just about posture… and sadly, if it wasn’t about the posture at all, and there wasn’t any advantage seen after each time there was “help”.

It was, what it was. I am sure Brooke is rethinking this all, and she is a loyal trooper to Quinn, so, it was what it was.

She has a tough job, she does her best, that hasn’t changed.

  94. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:43 pm:

Fun times at the OK Corral today.

After yesterday’s debacle of a press conference, no one on Team Rauner should be mocking Quinn for being unprepared to debate.

Perhaps that is what this “story” is all about.

Quinn may have looked totally unprepared to debate today.

But with every passing day, Rauner appears unprepared to govern.

Both teams need very different kinds of help.

  95. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:49 pm:

===Quinn may have looked totally unprepared to debate today.

But with every passing day, Rauner appears unprepared to govern.

Both teams need very different kinds of help.===

    Great snapshot, well said.

Is it more damaging to ask for help and look follish doing so, or think you know it all and it turns out you know nothing at all in the end?

Quinn’s Crew needs to understand Rauner is not being held to anythng he is saying, so, when going on the offensive, and even more importantly, when on the defensive…

Be prepared, look prepared, act prepared.

Rauner is calling your Principle a “Bumbler”, don’t help Rauner by making it look so.

  96. - fair and balanced - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 3:58 pm:

Ok true enough he is very new to politics, he has never had to understand the process of being prepared and ready to govern…
oh wait were are talking about Quinn right? he has been governor for 6 years

  97. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

===…he is very new to politics, he has never had to understand the process of being prepared and ready to govern…

The Raunerite talking point is Career Politican. You are off the reservation, lol

In an attempt to get Oswego Willy back to making up hilarious “quotes” of Ms. Anderson’s whispered advice, I offer up a couple of lame suggestions for him to top:

    “This is Illinois.”

    “Sic transit gloria mundi.”

  100. - KneeJerk - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:19 pm:

Both candidates’ PR people should have been out of camera range or inconspicuous by their posture and apparel. Poor optics for both sides.

  101. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:24 pm:

    “One word. Plastics”

(tips cap to - Anon. -)

“I’m going to get the papers, get the papers”

“Leave the notes, take the cannoli”

    “It was a sled”

“Tommy’s gone, and there’s nothin’ we could do about it”

    “Ask him where’s the Carhartt”

  102. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:30 pm:

  105. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:55 pm:

    Thanks Willy.

  106. - leprechaun - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 4:57 pm:

I can only imagine the campaign commercials you will see Quinn in saying ” I don’t know about that”, and using this footage. You can bet it will get Teed up by team Rauner.

  107. - Louis G Atsaves - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 5:12 pm:

That last video, oh, my! And is that “Quinnochio” holding up a sign in the background? Anderson laughing at the question didn’t help.

  108. - ChinaTown - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 5:39 pm:

Just catching up on this… as usual, agree with YDD and Oswego.

Rauner, to those with an ounce of knowledge, has been exposed as entirely unfit to govern. This performance was the same dishonest shtick, albeit a confidently delivered one.

But the optics of the Quinn “staff gaffe” (a phrase that is a fireable offense IMO) is such an amateurish, unforced error. What is she doing in the shot at all? Heck, what’s Rauner’s person behind him doing in the shot?

If you’re staff and you make or become the story, you’re doing it wrong. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  109. - orzo - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 5:42 pm:

Rauner’s staffer is so bored she’s playing with her smartphone.

  110. - Macbeth - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 5:43 pm:

Why not do the Brando and wear an earpiece? Geez, Brando had an earpiece and cue cards all up and down the walls during the Godfather. Do the same thing. Say what you need to say, and when you need help — get it quietly and inconspicuously.

    Are earpieces allowed during debates?

  111. - Jechislo - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 7:09 pm:

    “John has a long mustache”.

  112. - Fair - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 9:38 pm:

If this is all Rauner has to swing back with, it’s weak sauce. Voters don’t care or pay attention to this kind of stuff. That said, this was Anderson’s mistake, not Quinn’s. Her job is to manage the optics. She knows the camera is there and rolling, and doesn’t think being on tape passing notes would look bad? I don’t care what he or she is wearing or what the notes said. It makes the candidate look weak. That’s 101 level stuff.

  113. - Mighty M. Mouse - Tuesday, Sep 9, 14 @ 9:51 pm:

===I don’t work for Quinn, I have nothing to do with Quinn, I am a Republican, who refuses to “be quiet” and let Rauner and the Rauerites think being the GOP version of Blago is good.===

OW, you are so right, you see so clearly, you are like the little boy who insisted the emperor wasn’t wearing any clothes. Remove his mask and chameleon Rauner is really another Blago but as a Republican!

    To the post:

“Da coach wants you to know it’s nothing personal.”

  118. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 10, 14 @ 9:16 am:

    - M M. M -,

Thanks, appreciate the props. There are many seeing Rauner as he hopes not to be see.My hope is the observations stand alone on their merits. Much respect.
