Bloomberg to spend $1.9 million on Dold

Tuesday, Oct 21, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Crain’s

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is spending big money to sway another congressional race in Illinois.

Independence USA, a Washington-based super PAC he controls, is buying $1.9 million in television ads supporting former GOP Rep. Robert Dold, who is in a close race to reclaim his seat from Rep. Brad Schneider, a Democrat, in the North Shore’s 10th congressional district.

That’s the largest outside spending by a wide margin in the race, which has drawn national attention and outside spending by several groups. The Bloomberg PAC’s spending is almost $1 million more than an independent expenditure by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in May that also was intended to aid Mr. Dold.

Whew.

What’s the latest polling in this one? Seems late $$ is not a good sign for one of them

  3. - OneMan - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:23 pm:

    Wow….

  4. - Wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

That’s a big deal. — $2 million for supporting gun legislation that will never see the light of day in the GOP controlled House.

    KOCH BOTHERS!!!!!!

    Oh, wait: BLOOMBERG!!!!!

  6. - Nonplussed - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:29 pm:

    Brothers, not bothers

  7. - 2016 - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:29 pm:

It would be interesting to see how Dold would survive 2016 if he won

  8. - paddyrollingstone - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:30 pm:

Wordslinger - you said it. But I guess when your worth 28 billion or whatever he is worth you can afford to blow money like that.

  9. - walker - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:31 pm:

Why? A rare GOPer who supports gun legislation?

  10. - 2016 - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:32 pm:

–Why? A rare GOPer who supports gun legislation?–

My statements were just a general statement not directly related to this specific ad

It’s still good to be rich.

  12. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:44 pm:

Is Schneider that much of an anti-1% that Bloomberg feels compelled to get rid of him? This is the 10th District after all. Makes you suspect Bloomberg is he just establishing cred with the GOP (”don’t mind that gun control business…”)

  13. - phocion - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:48 pm:

Kind of late in the game. But Bloomberg is no dummy. He must have seen some polling that shows Dold being able to pull this off. Dold and Bloomberg are pretty much cut from the same moderate Republican mold.

  14. - truthteller - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:50 pm:

Only in America: $1.9 million = free speech.

  15. - Anon III - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 3:05 pm:

I have to think that if Dole is elected, and Bloomberg telephones, Dole will take the call.

  16. - Louis G Atsaves - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 3:10 pm:

Bloomberg appeared at a Dold fundraiser 2 years ago. They have a strong relationship. Kind of kills the Schneider “TEA PARTY!” nonsense he insists on trying to sell.

  17. - walker - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 3:44 pm:

2016: and my question was directed at Bloomberg’s choice.

  18. - walker - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 3:47 pm:

Louis: Good point. Will Bloomberg put his face next to Dold’s in an ad?

  19. - Cook County Commoner - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 3:51 pm:

The reasonable good employment numbers touted by P Quinn may result from campaign spending in the state. A state constitutional amendment lowering terms of all elected offices to two years may be a real economy booster.

  20. - anon - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 4:48 pm:

Second Amendment enthusiasts hate Bloomberg, calling him the gun-grabber in chief. I wonder how conservatives in the district feel voting for the candidate backed to the hilt by Bloomberg?

  21. - Steve - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 4:52 pm:

Bloomberg must figure there’s little chance this election cycle of Democrats controlling the House. He must figure it’s better to have some influence in the Republican party because his financial interests could be hurt without a voice in the GOP.

  22. - Wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 5:02 pm:

Yes, Steve, like everyone on Planet Earth, Bloomberg knows the Dems have no chance of taking the House. Great insight.

But you think he’s worried about his $33 billion and is making Dold his point man in DC? Where do you get this stuff?

  23. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 5:23 pm:

I can’t imagine that Dold has a good voting record on gun issues. What the hell?

  24. - Responsa - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 5:44 pm:

==I can’t imagine that Dold has a good voting record on gun issues. What the hell?==

If you go to Dold’s website and read what he actually says about a whole host of issues (including three paragraphs on gun control) instead of relying on Brad Schneider’s ads, you might learn more about his positions and would not have to imagine.

  25. - Todd - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 6:56 pm:

he just another anti-gunner only with an R behind his name. Hope Schneider wins

  26. - Watchdog - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 10:51 pm:

Todd what a horrible thing to hope for.
