*** UPDATED x1 *** Has the haymaker punch arrived?
Friday, Oct 24, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller * I received this text last night. I’m getting tons of texts these days, so for whatever reason I didn’t see it until this afternoon…
I’ve been asking for the ad for the past couple of hours. Anybody seen it? Hopefully, this post will break it loose from the Quinn campaign. *** UPDATE *** It’s out. It’s OK. Don’t think it’s a killer punch, though… I’ll leave comments opened for a while so you can digest this one.

It doesn’t matter if we see it here, if it’s a good spot, it needs to be up on TV with some serious gross ratings points behind it.
- too obvious - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:13 pm:
I think it’s an excellent ad with a real punch because it’s not too over the top.
Use of a real person testimonial cuts through the noise of all the other generic hit spots.
- Wensicia - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:14 pm:
Saw it a few minutes ago during the news. A better ending line would have been: “I lost my wife because Bruce Rauner wanted to profit from his nursing home investment.”

Whoh. Not a knockout, but quite effective.
- Politidork - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:16 pm:
I don’t think this is a game changer. I’m not the target demographic either though and wasn’t moved by the FLOTUS ad either.
It may tug at the heartstrings of the right people, but I’m not sure. Gonna need a bigger boat.
- Kasich Walker, Jr. - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:17 pm:
Just saw it for the first time playing now (5:14 pm on WLS TV 7).
A Simon ad followed.
Then an anti-Bob Dold ad by Schneider
Then an anti-Tom Cross ad by Friercih.
Then an anti-Schneider from Dold.
It’s ridiculous. Not sure how these ads can impact anyone who supposedly is undecided.
Maybe those saying the buys are needed get kickbacks from the media outlets.
- IrishPirate - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:18 pm:
Ok I know FoxTV killed Quinn’s campaign using a Mister Burns spot from “The Simpson’s”, but they might be able to use this.
Widmark as “Tommy Udo” from “Kiss of Death”.

- better days - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:26 pm:
Should have run it sooner.. less effect now …most voters have made choice
Lousy Quinn State Management over past 6 years now scandals at IDOT, 55 Million dollar 2010 QUINN slush fund scandal Quinn a winner ??? LOL
- Responsa - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:27 pm:
Dang! I was expecting the third episode of The Wolf of Winnetka.
- E town - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:28 pm:
Not impressed. Won’t break through all the clutter of all current commercials. Lost in shuffle
- IrishPirate - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:31 pm:
I posted this yesterday and then yesterday’s posts went “poof”.
Joseph Cotten as Quinn and Orson Welles as Rauner.

Nice add a few weeks ago when people were engaged . I get the strong feeling voters want it over and most have made up there minds.
Aside from something catastrophic people know who they voting for.
It’s now GOTV time
- Precinct Captain - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:41 pm:
Maybe it won’t move undecideds, but if there are any people who dislike Rauner who weren’t thinking of voting before…
- Macbeth - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:42 pm:
Doesn’t matter at this point what happens.
The reality is that Rauner is a bustout sleaze. Shrimpf can deny all he wants.
These victims suffer, Rauner gets rich. It’s disgusting — but this is how Rauner defines success. The more pain, the more money in his pocket.
- Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:46 pm:
BAM! This Ad ALONE will cost Rauner over 1% of the vote–and may well just become the final trip-up that costs him the Election. The facts are the facts as we say in the Law. And the facts which the People YOU want to be leader of, hurt real bad sometimes. But not as badly as someone who DIES, and how their loved ones feel once it happens and could’ve been prevented by the Owner–oh yes, that would be Bruce…
Guess that’s why ALL of those many now-DECEASED Loved Ones felt there was nothing else to do but sue Bruce for the NEGLIGENCE HE and others were reSPONSible for…! Yet many still think this kind of approach to running things is how a guy like him should be empowered to run our Beloved Home State and its’ 13+ Million People.
Hopefully just a few more will think the OPPosite come Election Day and we can exterminate the terrifying thought of such a Scary guy trying to run things like THIS(?!)–and who boasts endlessly about it to boot!!!–and then fall Victims Ourselves to a person who can allow things like THIS to occur under HIS WATCH dictating to the 99.99 REST of us how to LIVE in Illinois for the next 4 years…! God help us.
- Norseman - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:46 pm:
It’s good, but - as you say, not a knockout. This will give older folks a pause.
I suspect it will also generate a response ad. Which would be a Quinn win as well.
- DuPage - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:48 pm:
This is one that we learn about. I suspect there are a lot more that died from neglect and abuse in Rauner’s nursing homes.
- Bobio - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:52 pm:
I kinda think people already get the Rauner is the horrible billionaire uncaring tycoon bit. The voters have been hammered with it for months. He better figure out how to get woman to vote FOR him because Rauner is not Bill Brady.
This one is slipping away from Quinn pretty quick
- Smitty Irving - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:55 pm:
What will make this a knockout punch if the ad keeps running and there are a different set of victims every few days.
- too obvious - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:58 pm:
Seniors vote and they also watch tv. And they are also wise and experienced enough to know that darn right they should be extremely scared of Bust Out Bruce.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:58 pm:
To the Update,
I shy away from this as much as I can, too close to home.
It’s a “B” as an Ad, but that’s not it’s grade.
This Ad, to me, hits a personal level I may not be able to express. If the target is to tug on personal heart strings, not as just a message, for me, it does that.
For those with family history that includes these stories, or know friends who have these horror stories, this will be impactful.
As a mass message, on it’s Ad delivery, it’s a “B”.
For my personal story, it impacts me.
- Amalia - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:04 pm:
I give it a B+ they personalize it with an actual person telling his story, they use a softer voice to communicate the message with the screen text, they repeat the message that they are selling over and over right now….lots on the radio in chicago market….Rauner owned nursing homes that were mismanaged and people died. they think that will resonate most with women, who are generally the caregivers for their elderly parents.
If Rauner is elected, public service would be a witness protection program for Rauner’s business ethics. he would be purged of his multiple bad acts by going into public service. (in a way, diana did that by leaving the financial greed industry where she met Bruce and heading to chapin hall for work for children.)
Rauner’s business ethics make me sick.
- crazybleedingheart - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:08 pm:
Yeah, i dont think this is just for old folks. It hits a lot of us in the sandwich generation. Especially (but not only) women, who are more often taking care of parents to delay entry into a home because of these risks, or advocating for someone who’s already in one and feeling a lot of guilt and frustration over lapses in care.
- Anonymous - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:08 pm:
I agree with Bobio, they’ve passed the saturation point of “Rauner is evil” ads. C ad.
- crazybleedingheart - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:09 pm:
Ha. I see Amalia and I had the same thought about women.
- Chicago Cynic - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:13 pm:
Agree with Willy, not just because I think this ad is a B, but also because I do have bad nursing home experience. That said, I’m not sure this is going to move anyone who hasn’t been moved by the previous 247,931 spots defining Rauner as greedy.
- IrishPirate - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:19 pm:
Rauner needs to commission some band to write a pro Rauner song. I suggest “Blue Oyster Cult”. Their most famous song is “Don’t Fear The Reaper”. Change “reaper” to “Rauner” and add some carharrt and cowbell……gotta have the cowbell.
- Grandson of Man - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:21 pm:
I rate it a B. I wanted to see a nursing home ad that involves family members trying to collect on their lawsuit settlements and struggling to get them. That would show the double whammy of nursing home neglect and corporate evasion of financial responsibility.
- Ann - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:22 pm:
Maybe I’m just cold-hearted and callous, but my reaction was that people die because nursing home owners are greedy all the time and so what difference does one more make. I think the ownership to neglect link is too attenuated to really swing voters. Is there an ad running featuring the direct Rauner quotes in the Christine Kirk matter? One of the unfortunate side effects of the McKinney situation is that it’s taken over the underlying story, which I think is far more powerful. I think almost every woman in DuPage County would respond to “I don’t know if she has a family or not, but if she does, she better think twice about this.”

And, btw, as much as everyone here hated them, the first Wolf ad now has almost 21,000 YouTube views.

- Responsa - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:30 pm:
Heh. You’re a peach, Rich. At least they’re consistent. That Wolf was definitely as bad as the rest of them were!
- anonano - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:33 pm:
Let’s see, they have been running Rauner is evil ads for weeks and weeks, and he is now leading in the last 3 recent polls. Seems people are not buying what is trying to be sold.
- regular democrat - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 6:34 pm:
The final punch will be a minority student who didn’t get in to Payton prep because he clout ed his kid in there

===The final punch will be a minority student who didn’t get in to Payton prep because he clout ed his kid in there===
I’ve been talking up that Ad for months and months, we’re at single digit days, but it is a microcosm of Rauner.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 7:02 pm:
To the Ad,
Making it one story is far more compelling.
Daytime/morning rotation makes sense too.
