Quinn finally wins a newspaper endorsement!

Friday, Oct 24, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’m not sure, however, that touting support from Illinois State University’s student newspaper is gonna look all that convincing in a TV ad

The Vidette Editorial Board chooses to endorse Pat Quinn for the position of governor of Illinois in the 2014 General Election.

Such crisp enthusiasm!

But, hey, at least the guv finally broke his losing streak… kinda.

* Meanwhile, Bruce Rauner finally chatted with the SJ-R’s editorial board today…

Everyone knows what needs to be done. Same old talking points with little to no substance.

Hopefully, SJR just sits this one out with an article similar to this: http://www.suntimes.com/news/steinberg/30565232-452/steinberg-vote-for-oh-heck-whomever-you-please.html#.VEfbc_nF-SrWOW

  2. - Anonymoiis - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:39 pm:

I’m waiting on the Street Wise endorsement

  3. - Earnest - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:41 pm:

Kind of the endorsement equivalent of the Miss Congeniality Award. Frankly, though, I put more value on it than I do the endorsements of the Trib and ST.

  4. - William j Kelly - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:42 pm:

These students better hope Quinn wins or it lights out for them AND their family!

  5. - Northsider - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:45 pm:

Also, tax cuts for the wealthy help everyone because if you just believe hard enough, it’ll come true. Too.

  6. - VM - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:49 pm:

Increase funding for schools AND cut their main source of funding. Interesting.

I wonder how what kind of math they teach at Rauner Prep.

  7. - Lunchbox - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:52 pm:

    Haha, Anonymoiis!

  8. - Concerned Observer - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:52 pm:

There is a Sheila Simon ad I saw this morning on NBC 5 in Chicago that touts a Daily Egyptian newspaper article attacking Topinka for corruption.

    Daily Egyptian. I mean….

  9. - Wensicia - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:54 pm:

Well, it’s better than an Onion endorsement.

  10. - Demoralized - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:56 pm:

Rauner backs himself into a corner again. He wants to eliminate government patronage. He’d better eliminate all exempt positions and have everybody go through the civil service system then if he wants to do that. I hope all of his supporters realize there isn’t going to be any gravy train of jobs coming if he is elected since he is saying he’ll never push anybody for a job.

  11. - OldSmoky2 - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:56 pm:

Rauner says he will “assemble a talented team of experts?” Kind of funny since he did so badly on his first team pick as wannabe governor, i.e., his choice of Evelyn Sanguinetti as his running mate. It was telling last night when WTTW’s Chicago Tonight said its next candidate forum Tuesday night will feature only one candidate, Paul Vallas, because the Rauner campaign declined the invitation to have Sanguinetti appear. Rauner’s own staff knows it would cost them votes to have her answering questions on the same stage as Vallas for even 10 minutes. It doesn’t say much for his ability to assemble a good team to do anything in Illinois government.

  12. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 12:56 pm:

Rauner is disavowing the Brownback Plan, but there really is no difference.

Both budgets hinge on the idea that if you slash taxes then business owners will just put that money back into creating jobs.

They didn’t in Kansas. Instead, they put the money into profit line.

Give Rauner credit for not blowing off the paper like Ernst did in Iowa, but I don’t expect the SJ-R will fall for the magic bean salesman.

  13. - Anonymour - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:03 pm:

YDD, Rauner is not a magic beans salesman. That’s so unfair.

He does, however, own the magic beans company.

  14. - Northsider - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:05 pm:

YDD @ 12:56 p.m.: The reporters and editors won’t, but their corporate masters will.

  15. - Formerly Known As... - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:07 pm:

    The streak is snapped! Ooof.

Talk about a shot to your ego as the incumbent governor of a state. Here is to him winning endorsement by at least one non-student newspaper at some point soon.

As for short-term fixes, the current budget used many of those up. There may not be many more of those left for the next budget.

  16. - 47th Ward - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:07 pm:

When I was at ISU we called it the Daily Regret.

  17. - Anonymous Plus - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:07 pm:

“I’m calling for an investigation into exactly how ISU came to endorse Quinn.” Is state funding just a coincidence here?”– Bruce Rauner (sarcasm alert … after all, who cares what a student newspaper says)

  18. - Gooner - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 1:21 pm:

The big story here is that somebody on an editorial board has noticed that Rauner’s math does not add up.

    That’s the real first.

  19. - Norseman - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:00 pm:

Our residents association is still waiting for the candidates to come in for their interviews before we can put the endorsement in our two page newsletter. If it was on me it would definitely be an Oswego Willy endorsement.

  20. - BarbaricYalp - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:02 pm:

    YDD,

“Give him credit…?” He blew off the paper for months. Months. And now he gets a gold star for actually showing up? It’s like showing up for the last five minutes of a final exam and getting points for just being there.

  21. - BarbaricYalp - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:05 pm:

So the answer, Mr. Rauner, is that your budget does not add up. Just say it. You have no budget. At least the Gov. had the common courtesy to introduce a budget and stand by it.

  22. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:10 pm:

    What are the “short-term fixes”?

  23. - Wordslinger - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:14 pm:

    “Talented team of experts.”

Like all that talent you selected that keeps doing all those bad things you now nothing about?

Or like that top-knotch campaign team that’s closing like the ‘69 Cubs?

  24. - Norseman - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

    === closing like the ‘69 Cubs ===

Ouch, that was a painful childhood memory.

  25. - Norseman - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:27 pm:

=== but I don’t expect the SJ-R will fall for the magic bean salesman ===

I hope not, at least I expect some serious challenge from Bernie. I don’t know about some of the others in the editorial board room.

  26. - Norseman - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 2:45 pm:

    === What are the “short-term fixes”? ===

They’re called “smoke and mirrors.” Used by most administrations. Elevated to an art form by convict Rod Blagojevich.

  27. - low level - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 3:13 pm:

Endorsements mean nothing these days, and likely were overrated to begin with. Yes, it’s nice to have, but I have yet to meet a single person say “I voted for so and so because the Tribune endorsed him”.

As a matter of fact, might have confirmed people’s suspicion based on whatever paper it was.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 3:23 pm:

    - Norseman -,

Quinn has only one more endorsement than I do.

    You smell that…that’s …victory.

  29. - Modest proposal - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 3:45 pm:

A bunch of snotty liberal college students who think they know everything about the world endorsed quinn…

  30. - A guy... - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 3:56 pm:

=== but I have yet to meet a single person say “I voted for so and so because the Tribune endorsed him”.===

Become a poll watcher or a poll judge. When you see people bring the paper into the polls you can rethink this.

  31. - Gooner - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 4:01 pm:

    A Guy,
Those newspapers are for the judges.

  32. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 4:14 pm:

===A bunch of snotty liberal college students who think they know everything about the world endorsed quinn…===

    Feel better?

  33. - crazybleedingheart - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:25 pm:

(Yes, I know, Bruce, your plan is to increase revenue through growth. Although you’ve seemingly never done that IRL. But, regardless, that’s not a SHORT-TERM SAME-YEAR strategy, eh? So go ahead and tell us. A? B? C? D?

    There’s no bailout choice, sorry!

  34. - D.P.Gumby - Friday, Oct 24, 14 @ 5:53 pm:

I expect him to get the SJR endorsement…especially after the meaninglessness of his answers to the editorial board.
