“Stealing the election” meme strikes again
Monday, Oct 27, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller * Several people have sent me this mailer from the IL GOP…
* As a commenter pointed out earlier today, this “stealing” claim not only sets up a “We was robbed!” battle cry after the election, but will also help fire up the base and get them to the polls before those Chicago thieves do their dirty work. The funniest part for me, though, was that several Democrats received that mailer and then sent it to me. And one guy in a black precinct on the South Side told me over the weekend that several people in his building received the GOP flier. Seems odd to me.

The Repubs targeting must be way off this cycle or they must need a lot more cross over votes than they are letting on… I had a friend who has been receiving Rauner mail almost every other day, however, he has voted D in every primary election since 2002.
- Anonymous - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:38 pm:
I still say this all much to do about nothing.
- Demoralized - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:38 pm:
I’ve gotten all kinds of mailers from the Republican party and their affiliated PAC’s. Not one from a Democratic organization. I’ve never taken a Republican primary ballot in my life. No idea how I got on their target mailing list.
- Wumpus - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:39 pm:
Well, when I run against Madigan, I will label him a Dino!
- William j Kelly - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:43 pm:
Demorality, maybe you received this mailer by accident because the Rauner’s got their ACLU (friends and family) list mixed up with the recently purchased republicans list.
- Carl Nyberg - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:43 pm:
Doesn’t this give the media permission to cover Chad Grimm as a candidate and interview him now?
Or is the Illinois media sufficiently bought off that the GOP doesn’t have to worry about this?
- Anon - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:43 pm:
The legalization of heroin is the best part about this…just why not go all out and go with the craziest things possible
- Anonymous - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:47 pm:
Has anyone received any of the pro-Chad Grimm mailers yet?
If do, care to share?
- so... - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:47 pm:
==The legalization of heroin is the best part about this…just why not go all out and go with the craziest things possible==
Ahem - “Grimm says he’s against public funding of education and also the regulation of drugs such as marijuana and heroin.” - http://wtax.com/news/101101-libertarian-chad-grimm-announces-candidacy-for-governor/
- hisgirlfriday - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:48 pm:
Somebody’s sending out robocalls warning about Chad Grimm too. The one I heard yesterday used the same “legalize heroin” line in it.
- Wordslinger - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:49 pm:
I don’t think it’s a good idea for Rauner to raise Grimm’s profile a week before the election.
But the cheez-whiz kids have been full of bad ideas since it got real.
Anyone still think the Libs hurt Quinn as much as Rauner?
- Marian - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:49 pm:
Received one of these as well. Registered Dem but live in very Repub downstate county.
- Under Further Review - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:51 pm:
Well, there is a union sponsored mailer out for Chadd Grimm that looks like a Democratic piece designed to divide the GOP. Conservatives are told that Grimm is “Pro Life” (which is contrary to the usual Libertarian approach) and “Pro Gun.” The piece also faulted Rauner for opposing gun rights.
Interestingly, while this mailer was being delivered, other Democratic surrogates for Quinn were savaging Rauner for being “pro gun.”
The purpose of the mailer is obvious: it is too peel off conservative Republican voters from Rauner.
- William j Kelly - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 4:51 pm:
Anon, Chad does NOT support legalizing heroine. Only a candidate as dishonest as rauner would lie on a flier bemoaning ‘dirty politics!’

- Louis G. Atsaves - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:00 pm:
Speaks right to the conservatives. Well put together and will blunt union efforts to fake out conservative voters into voting against Rauner.
And yes, he wants to legalize heroin.
- Wordslinger - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:10 pm:
Louis, your concen about heroin is touching. Big problem in the suburbs.
Maybe you should send some of those pistoleros you hired to goon it up with the Libs to make some citizen arrests in Austin.
- Angel's Sword - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:15 pm:
I got this mailer and died laughing.
Hey, everyone, the election is being stolen! There’s… (dramatic pause) …someone else on the ballot! What a threat to democracy!
- Under Further Review - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:20 pm:
The oddest thing about the oversized postcard mailing promoting Grimm as “PRO-LIFE” and “PRO-2ND AMENDMENT” is that the disclaimers indicate that the message (Grimm is a conservative and Rauner is a liberal) is not authorized by Grimm. The piece was mailed by “Liberty for Illinois” which has a Chicago post office box for a return address. Another disclaimer added that Grimm is not responsible for the activities of “Liberty for Illinois.”
It is quite bizarre.
- Rich Miller - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:22 pm:
UFR, please send me that mailer. Thanks.
- circularfiringsquad - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:27 pm:
Mitt is using a mail program that waste money on those who voted with the GOPies in the March primary. The funniest part is Mitt knocks for being pro Choice and Pro Gay. Mitt of course is both. The whack jobs will punish Mitt for this stunt.
- Downstate Libertarian - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:28 pm:
Grimm’s comments about drugs are not out of line with the LP platform, which states that The LP favors “the repeal of all laws creating “crimes” without victims, such as the use of drugs for medicinal or recreational purposes, since only actions that infringe on the rights of others can properly be termed crimes. Individuals retain the right to voluntarily assume risk of harm to themselves. We support restitution to the victim to the fullest degree possible at the expense of the criminal or the negligent wrongdoer. We oppose reduction of constitutional safeguards of the rights of the criminally accused. The rights of due process, a speedy trial, legal counsel, trial by jury, and the legal presumption of innocence until proven guilty, must not be denied. We assert the common-law right of juries to judge not only the facts but also the justice of the law.”
What is interesting is that the GOP skipped to the party platform when looking at the abortion issue rather than his personal stance. Additionally, when you consider the platform, it states “Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.” How does that say supports abortion on demand?
Won’t go into much time into how Grimm (and the rest of the LP) was kept on the ballot as the statement was false. Clearly, if the GOP paid attention to all of the unpaid volunteers that were going line-by-line over signatures in the fight to keep them in place.
Wordslinger, when looking at the battle for conservatives and liberals, polling data does not show a marked difference in where LP draws support. It is the battle for the independents that Rauner and the GOP are losing because they were unrealistically counting on a higher percentage.

Rich: How do I do so?
It is suspicious. The Political Action Committee filed its D-1 on 10-22-2014, but its union funding seems to have been issued prior to its founding.
- Rich Miller - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:32 pm:
Scan it and email it.

Okay, I will see what I can do. I am technologically challenged.
- RNUG - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:44 pm:
It’s been an interesting year in terms of campaign outreach. As noted elsewhere, I’ve gotten lots of vote for Rauner or other GOP candidates from both their campaigns and various gorups you would expect to be supporting them … for example, the NRA just to name one national group. I’m not surprised by that since I have pulled an R ballot in the primary the last few elections. I even have a sign in my yard for one R candidate I can support. But what has been amusing is the amount of D literature that I’ve received in the mail or had dropped off at the door. Everyone on both sides is working hard to both ensure they lock up “their” regular voters and to try to find “new” voters. Going to be a LONG election night …
- D.P.Gumby - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:44 pm:
We keep getting Brucie robocalls…we live in an R neighborhood, but no reason anyone should think we’d vote for him. Clearly not doing any targeting, but shotgunning.
- Anonymous - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:46 pm:
If you have a smart phone you could take a picture of the front & back and email
- MIMI - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:53 pm:
When will the media cover the voter intimidation by guy with guns working for the Rauner campaign staffers against Oak Park Libertarians.
Haven’t the Libertarians sued the Rauner campaign?
- Under Further Review - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 5:59 pm:
Running over to a neighbor with high school aged kids to handle it. LOL!
- Rich Miller - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:02 pm:
Thanks!
- Come on man! - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:05 pm:
The ILGOP targeting has been off this cycle.
- PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:14 pm:
UFP, you could also take a picture on your smart phone and email it as well.
- Ron - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:28 pm:
So the way I interpret this flier is that voters having the right to choose from other candidates (besides the two establishment party candidates) is not only an affront to the election process but an attempt “to steal the election”. Makes sense to me. Not!
- Downstate Libertarian - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:39 pm:
Mimi, Libertarian Candidate for Illinois Attorney General, Ben Koyl, has filed a complaint with the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. Koyl is calling for a federal investigation regarding the intimidation of petition circulators and signers by Republican-hired private investigators.
The use of force, intimidation, threat or deception intended to impede the petitioning process is a Class 4 felony under Illinois Election Code (10 ILCS 5/29-4).
- Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 6:39 pm:
The people of Illinois better think twice before voting Quinn. They vote Quinn, I will bury them with legal fees.

- railrat - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 7:41 pm:
could this be because the International Union of Operating Engineers local 150 gave Grimm PAC $$$ because of fear/paranoia of a Rauner victory? and they have tons of money from a contract language PAC clause? was this not reported in the Sun Times Sat. or Sun.? if true interesting a “union” supports a candidate that doesn’t agree with minimum wage, prevailing wage, project labor agreements , wants tort reform, workers comp reform, wants public sector pension reform…doesn’t support card check, or have the Libertarians changed their platform?
- MrJM (@MisterJayEm) - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 7:44 pm:
This year, MrsJM & I have received multiple mailers from the GOP.
An inexplicable waste of money.

- Under Further Review - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 8:26 pm:
I delivered the postcard and I hope that it will be scanned after suppertime.
What is curious about this “Liberty for Illinois” (independent Political Action Committee) is that it seemed to have been funded prior to its creation date (10-22-14). Allowing time for printing, obtaining a mailing permit and postal delivery, it really seemed as if this project was expedited. I received the postcard on Saturday (10-25-14). Maybe this is what they call a coordinated campaign. Mere mortals do not get such rapid results.
The only campaign committee officer is someone named “Michael Bonivel” according the online information provided by the Illinois State Board of Elections.
- Finally Out (formerly Ready to Get Out) - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 8:42 pm:
I am going to have to pay attention to some of these mailers. As I’m already in the Quinn camp, for various reasons, all mailers go straight to the recycle bin.
- Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 9:06 pm:
I really appreciate the fact republicans have to do a hit piece on the libertarian. Everyone in my family got one of these, and we all had a good laugh.
- G'Kar - Monday, Oct 27, 14 @ 9:06 pm:
I did not get the mailer, but I did get two robo calls over the weekend from the Ill. Rep. Party. Both were urging me not to vote for Grim, but only the second one mentioned him by name. What struck me most was how poor the sound quality of the recording. It sounded like an old man trying to talk through a mouth full of pebbles!
- anonano - Tuesday, Oct 28, 14 @ 5:51 am:
Just trying to not get homered in the opposing teams gym. The last time there was a clock “malfunction” at the end of a close game and you learn later the brother-in-law of the opposing coach was the timekeeper.
GOP just trying to be proactive so nothing “fishy” goes on.
