Rauner unhurt when motorcade involved in crash

* From a press release…
Illinois State Police (ISP) Director Hiram Grau today released the following statement regarding the four-vehicle, injury crash that occurred at Michigan Avenue at E. Randolph Street involving the Governor’s motorcade.
Illinois State Police Executive Protection Unit (EPU) officers were completing a routine movement of Governor Rauner this morning when a traffic crash occurred in the intersection directly in-front of them.
The Governor’s motorcade was stationary at a red light preparing to travel westbound on E. Randolph Street when a two vehicle crash occurred. One of the vehicles spun out of control after the crash and slid across the intersection striking the vehicle Governor Rauner was riding in along with ISP officers and another vehicle.
Neither the Governor nor any ISP officers suffered injury in the crash. Damage was sustained to the front right bumper/fender area of the vehicle in which the Governor was traveling.
A total of three people involved in the initial crash were transported to Northwestern Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries for treatment. The Chicago Police Department responded to the scene to handle the crash.

Secretariat, I’ve been counting the minutes until somebody made that goofy comment.
Take a breath.

You gotta love how the cops put things.

The rich really are different. Most people have to get by with a bran muffin and a cup of coffee.
Hope the folks who got taken to Northwestern are okay.
- IrishPirate - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:43 pm:
Didn’t Rahm explain to Rauner that stoplights are for, dare I say, chumbolones. Some CPD needs to be detailed to Governor’s ISP detail to show them how it’s done.
- D.P.Gumby - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:43 pm:
Why? Was Evelyn driving?
- WhoKnew - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:45 pm:
The metaphorical “Bumpy Ride” has officially begun!

Did the Carhartt inflate upon impact?
- IrishPirate - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:48 pm:
Oh man, Willy. I wish I was better with photoshop. I’d create an image of the crash and a deployed carhartt.
- Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:50 pm:
Has Evelyn been taking the train in?
- HG - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:51 pm:
Why wasn’t he in Springfield?
Does Governor Rauner live in Chicago and fly a taxpayer funded airplane to and from Springfield?

“Caption Contest”, lol
- IrishPirate - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:54 pm:
Something with Rauner dressed like Mad Max might work.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 3:56 pm:
Glad to read no life-threatening injuries.
- Trstmay - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:00 pm:
A couple of years ago I was walking by the Trump Tower downtown Chicago and Governor Quinn walked by me. No special detail, no motorcade. Just an unassuming person just trying to blend in. How is Governor Rauner getting back and forth to Chicago? Driving? The train? Or is he flying in the Stae plane?
- Norseman - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:02 pm:
Waiting for the press release touting Rauner’s bang up job.
- Soccermom - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:02 pm:
ISP later reported that the cause of the crash appeared to be a flex fuel Chevy Impala that veered suddenly out of control when the operator caught sight of the gubernatorial motorcade…

Didn’t you read CF yesterday? You gotta come to Chicago to get a good sangwich. He was hungry. He’ll be back after curfew.
Ack.
- How Ironic - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:08 pm:
I’m glad there were no injuries to the Gov and ISP.
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:22 pm:
Glad no one was seriously hurt.
It was only a car crash. If it was a train wreck, then it’d be a perfect analogy of the Rauner administration.
jk.

- Bluefish - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:23 pm:
Gov. Rauner’s correct response should have been to get out of his vehicle holding his head, claim whiplash, sue the driver’s insurance company for $16 billion then use the proceeds from the suit to plug the state’s budget hole.

Maybe a red light camera at that location would’ve prevented that crash
- IrishPirate - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:34 pm:
I’m picturing Pat Quinn as Wiley Coyote and Rauner as the Road Runner…………meep meep.
You can substitute Rutherford for Quinn if you prefer to be a bit darker in tone.
- Roscoe Tom - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:42 pm:
f course the cynical will ask where was Quinn -check all cameras
- Keyser Soze - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:55 pm:
Word from the Mansion is that the Governor is spending the week in Chicago. Until now he had not been to the office in the Thompson Center.
- north shore cynic - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 4:58 pm:
I thought he only traveled on the Gubernatorial Harley.
- Nick Naylor - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 5:02 pm:
Speaking of state planes, I wonder how long it will be before we get word that the twin prop King Air state planes are not suitable and that the Rauners are going to purchase a more respectible ride, like maybe a G-5, out of their personal stash?
- Gooner - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 5:06 pm:
Keyser, not sure he made to the office, but as I noted yesterday, per his Twitter feed, he spent time yesterday at the Thompson Center.
If he went to the Thompson Center just for the burger and skipped the office then I may walk a precinct for him in four years.

How big of a motorcade does Rauner use? There were, if I’m not mistaken, at least four SUV’s for the inauguration. How many does a governor need?
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 5:20 pm:
===How many does a governor need?===
I generally don’t question security details because I’m not privy to death threats, etc. There’s a protocol here and I have no reason yet to expect that he’s abusing the privilege.
- Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 5:33 pm:
If he’s been to Thompson than he knows how awful that place looks. It has not been kept up and is not aging gracefully.
- low level - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 6:05 pm:
the Rauner’s will get a Gulfstream 650, then they’ll be feeling so fly like a G6. (Far East Movement - “Like a G6″)
- The Great State Fair - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 6:10 pm:
Rauner was in the concourse yesterday. Met Governors but never saw anything like his pressing the flesh with regular people. Also, Constitutional officers get threats all the time. George Ryan was criticized for bodyguards. All Secretaries of State in Illinois get threats all the time from people whose licenses are revoked, etc.
- Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 6:36 pm:
Gosh, some of you people are goofy.
If you haven’t noticed, Rauner ain’t about the bling. He likes to put his dough in things that will make him more dough, not depreciate away. He is about as likely to buy a G650 as AA.
To the post, glad everyone will be ok. I think we can rest assured that the security arrangements for our elected State officials are adequate but not excessive. If four SUVs were in place for the inaugural, that’s likely because the ISP was moving the entire first family.
- Gb20 - Wednesday, Jan 21, 15 @ 8:14 pm:
From past experience, governor security details are at the discretion of the protected. It’s not like the secret service (lucky if your feet touch the floor…)
Quinn had his little sedan that he rode in / drove around. Usually had one member of detail with him at all times during events/business. Minimal security at his request, and often had no security during non-work hours.
Blagojevich had an SUV plus a tail/lead car. When jogging, he had detail on a bike, plus a tail car. Minimum 2 ISP with him no matter the hour, including car outside house plus apartment with on-call team. Patti had detail as well.
Based on Thompson Center yesterday, it looks like Rauner is traveling with two SUVs and multiple security officers (more than 1 obviously). The SUVs look to be borrowed from other needs (not new), because they are mismatched.
