* Meanwhile, this is a press release about the governor’s first stop today…

Governor Bruce Rauner visited 1871 today to announce the creation of the new Innovate Illinois Advisory Council, which he has formed to foster opportunity and increase Illinois’ global competitiveness. Following the announcement, Governor Rauner toured 1871’s 75,000-square-foot facility, held a roundtable discussion with startups from 1871 and MATTER, and visited the recently-opened MATTER space, which is immediately adjacent to 1871 in The Merchandise Mart.

“Illinois is home to a wealth of resources, including world-class educational institutions, leading national labs, 33 Fortune 500 companies, dozens of innovation and entrepreneurship hubs, a vibrant culture, and an extensive transportation network,” Governor Rauner said. “Yet our state continues to fall behind. In the last ten years, the Boston Consulting Group estimates our lagging growth has cost Illinois more than 175 thousand jobs. This council will help us create and implement a shared vision for a 21st century economy that will turn Illinois into a global innovation destination.”

The council will be co-chaired by Laura Frerichs, director of the University of Illinois’ Research Park, and Mark Glennon, managing director of Ninth Street Advisors. 1871 will participate.

Governor Rauner has charged the council with developing an agenda to grow the state’s innovation economy, including developing high-growth industry clusters, attracting resources, developing and retaining top talent, and fostering collaboration among all the parties in the state’s technology and innovation community. The council will meet regularly to develop and facilitate the execution of key growth initiatives. It will work closely with Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and will have a core mission of bringing new opportunities to the forefront on behalf of the community.

Does it really take an “executive order” to form a study commission? Or is it just another way of saying “I’m appointing a commission.”

Not like there hasn’t been a few study commissions in the past.

  2. - very old soil - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:33 am:

Who is scheduling these events? Keynote address downtown at 12:15 and out to Elmhurst by 1:30. Short speech or the car from “Men in Black”?

  3. - CircularFiringSquad - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:34 am:

How ia BVR gonna get from downtown to Dupage in 30 min? Chopper?
BTW here will be a chance for everyone to read the SJR intern’s story on DuPage Dazzlin’ Savin’s and learn the $100 million comes from lay offs and a tax cut and takes 10 years to achieve

  4. - Norseman - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:40 am:

Rauner is definitely keeping Indy busy drafting Executive Orders.

I agree with your assumption. Another bunch of staffers will need to steer people to recommend what the Gov wants.

  5. - Wordslinger - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:44 am:

I’m a little out of touch with the lingo. What does “no additional media availability” mean? No reporters allowed?

  6. - Demoralized - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:45 am:

I thought it just meant no question and answer session, Word.

  7. - Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:49 am:

At first glance, when I read the governor was visiting 1871, I thought, “wow.” He invented a time machine and wanted to go look at Reconstruction to get ideas on how to make Illinois better. What a great guy.

  8. - DuPage Dave - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:51 am:

No way he gets to Elmhurst by 1:30 leaving downtown after 12:30 unless they close down the Eisenhower.

Also as a long-time DuPage resident I feel compelled to note that the government consolidation examples from his State of the State message were pure baloney. Those independent units of government continue to thrive here (and elsewhere). I’ve seen no reduction in the number of lines on my property tax bill. We grade school district, high school district, village, county, library district, fire protection district, etc. taxes to pay twice a year. I’ll believe it when I see it on paper, Bruce.

  9. - Soccermom - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 10:55 am:

do we have a list of the people on the innovation council?

  10. - 47th Ward - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 11:19 am:

“I’ve been successful at everything I’ve ever done.”

Except issuing legal executive orders and appointing conflict-free lawyers to defend them. After those two failures, he’d probably wise to stick with naming “blue ribbon” committees.

Oh, and he might want to get some better legal advice next time he thinks about issuing another executive order, which doesn’t mean what he must think it means.

  11. - very old soil - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 11:20 am:

Bottle of good scotch to the first to post video of Rauner and crew marching into the Capitol singing “EEE OHHH, EEE OHHH. It’s off to work we go!

  12. - Soccermom - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 12:00 pm:

    Very old -

    You’re conflating two different scenes.

It’s “Hi-ho, Hi-ho, It’s off to work we go!” (My daughter used to refer to her favorite movie as “I’m Wishing and the Five Hi-Hos.”)

The “Oh-Ee-Oh” chant is from the guards at the Wicked Witch’s castle in the Wizard of Oz

On this blog, we care about details and facts…

  13. - Speculaton - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 12:33 pm:

The EO will probably move some of the functions of DCEO to another agency or vise versa.

  14. - anon - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 1:00 pm:

DuPage picked up long-hanging fruit in reducing a handful of tiny units of local government. They have yet to take on the townships and small school districts, not to mention park districts and library districts, which are simply departments in municipal governments in some places.

  15. - very old soil - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 1:15 pm:

    Soccermom

I wasn’t conflating the scenes. I was proposing the for the Rauner crew writing EOs was their work.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 1:36 pm:

===On this blog, we care about details and facts…===

Some jems are as hilarious as they are true. Genius.

    To the Post;

Having edicts without media “availability” is not a “Rose Garden” style, but mirrors more a governor that could see hiding in a bathroom to avoid scrutiny is a good thing, just without the hair brush “football”

  17. - AnonymousOne - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 1:45 pm:

All these EOs sound like someone who is used to top down management theory. Will he ever learn to play with the other children?

  18. - Cheswick - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 2:30 pm:

I think he thinks all these EOs make him look presidential.

  19. - Been There - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 3:03 pm:

Since we haven’t heard any news yet I am assuming those above that questioned the aggressive scheduling times were correct

  20. - Newsclown - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 3:18 pm:

I would have liked to hear how the 1871 incubator was doing more for female-based start-ups - apparently, from what I read in the press, it’s become a bit of a “boys club” there.

Also, not a fan of the name 1871. It’s terrible and obscure from a marketing standpoint.

  21. - Soccermom - Friday, Feb 13, 15 @ 5:30 pm:

VOS — duh, totally missed the joke. Sorry.

  22. - networkisrael.wordpress.com - Thursday, Feb 19, 15 @ 7:01 am:

I don’t even understand how I ended up here,
but I assumed this submit was great. I do not recognise who you might be but definitely you’re going
to a famous blogger if you happen to aren’t already.
    Cheers!
