* From Vickie Kean…
It is with great sadness that I inform you that Don passed away this morning. Naydene, as always, was by his side.
We have lost both a leader and a friend, but he will be long remembered. Our prayers go out to his family.
Funeral services will be private but cards or letters of remembrance may be sent to Naydene at this address and I will be sure that she receives them.

Don put the best years of his life into the uphill battle of creating community opportunities for persons with disabilities and their families. No man or woman has done it longer with such determination. Families owe people like Don for so much hard work that they may never have known about…just the nature of the work.
You don’t ever replace someone who made it their life’s work like Don did. Our community of advocates lost a giant today.
I think I’ll do something I don’t do today, I think I’ll go to the Globe and raise one for Don and say thanks for showing me the way.

Don will be missed by so many people and should be missed even more who may not know about the legacy he has left us.
For over 50 years Don was at the center of the fight for the rights of people with disabilities. What some may not know, Don was a player on the national scene also and had deep ties to many on the hill, including the Kennedy family who he provided legislative advise to.
Many of us view Don and as a mentor and a friend who we will miss so much.
As the former Director of Legislative Affair at DHS, I can tell you Don would “give it to you straight”. You may not like what he said, but you always knew he was looking out for the best others and not just for himself.
Rest In Peace Don, you have earned your reward.
Prayers to Vic, Naydene and Don’s daughters.

Rest in peace. He did truly groundbreaking work on behalf of persons with disabilities. Illinois has made some strides based on his work and effort. A life well-lived.
