Here’s something you don’t see every day

Wednesday, Jun 24, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* And you probably won’t ever see it again.

From a Champaign News Gazette editorial

Miller’s proposal is a long shot, at best. But it’s a good idea, one that would serve the public interest by reinserting real democracy — competitive elections — in races for the General Assembly.

    Time to submit LTE responses….

  2. - Dirty Red - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:10 pm:

Nice use of the word “maven.”

  3. - Very Fed Up - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:20 pm:

Don’t think you would ever see legislatures ever voluntarily allow this to be on the ballot. Not quite has horrifying to the GA as allowing us to vote on term limits but not far behind.

  4. - walker - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:20 pm:

“maven”, Yiddish for one who knows plenty

    “mensch” is next for Rich

  5. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:20 pm:

    Ain’t that somethin’?

  6. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:23 pm:

I saw that this morning. You got a commendation, sir. Sometimes that’s the most important thing.

  7. - Snopes - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:23 pm:

    Panderers.

  8. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:25 pm:

Maven Miller…..yea that’s good. Much better than Guru or Pundit. Joking aside, it’s sage wisdom. Ooo there’s another one, sage Miller. OR my favorite culteral referent from Brother Where are thou, oracle. “You shall not find the treasure you seek on account of your obSTACles”, says oracle Miller.

  9. - Ginhouse Tommy - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:25 pm:

Looks like RNUG and Oswego Willy have some serious competition. It is a good idea though.

  10. - Anonin' - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:29 pm:

Very rush/beck like to start promoting mention of Capt Fax’s name —then CNG mentions your mention and we are all duped.
Speakin’ of duped, it is now clear why TeamBungle back term limits and the remap scheme . Together the change makes it much easier to dump more robots into the process. Gotta be a lot cheaper than rentin’ votes or winnin’ races. Only losers are non millionairetaxpayers

  11. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:29 pm:

I had to read it twice!
    I couldn’t believe it!
DUDE - YOU ARE SO RELEVENT

  12. - Ginhouse Tommy - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:30 pm:

You know you have made real progress if MJM starts to wear khakis or wearing a Jerry Garcia tshirt or you hear him singing the song Ripple. Alas we can only hope.

  13. - Anon - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:31 pm:

Rich, FYI I have seen links to your blog shared by friends with no ties to politics or the legislative process recently on facebook due to your blog being referenced by the Chicagoans against Gov. Rauner facebook page that shows up in newsfeeds if you have “liked” it.

Looks like your reading base is becoming more widespread.

  14. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:33 pm:

===referenced by the Chicagoans against Gov. Rauner facebook page ===

Which could explain why I’ve had to put so many anti-Rauner bots in permanent time-outs lately.

  15. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:34 pm:

Hard to tell who’s more grateful:
You, for a positive review from the CNG or,
Manar, for having a school building project appropriation restored.

I’m giving you the slight edge in this one.

  16. - Tommydanger - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:38 pm:

This Miller kid looks promising. He might turn into something.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:46 pm:

===…Oswego Willy have some serious competition. It is a good idea though.===

Speaking for myself, I am a bi-product, a cheap one at that. Nothing more.

Rich Miller’s rational takes. Another example of hard work abd doing your job best will get recognized on its merits.

    Rich, with only respect;

    “You’re bigger than US Steel”

  18. - WAK - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:52 pm:

Anyone know what the potential impacts of the upcoming US Supreme Court decision on Arizona’s redistricting commissions might have on this (Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission). It seems the court might very well rule against allowing ballot initiatives that create independent commissions for re-districting. It comes down to the Constitution’s elections clause designated that the “times, places, and manner” of federal elections should be decided in each state by the “legislature thereof.”

  19. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:54 pm:

    Maven Miller….love it!

  20. - cover - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 1:59 pm:

WAK, if the Illinois General Assembly were to put forth this constitutional amendment proposal, I believe it would be difficult to argue against the procedure in court, especially if it only pertains to the district map of the General Assembly (not a federal election) and not that of the US House.

  21. - Streator Curmudgeon - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:01 pm:

    He’s so maven.

  22. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:04 pm:

It’s something to say you’ve created a fine, much read blog with your own 8 (or2) fingers. Movin’ On Up….

  23. - Filmmaker Professor - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:20 pm:

An endorsement by the News-Gazette would frighten me a lot more than flatter me. They also endorsed Sarah Palin too Rich.

  24. - allknowingmasterofracoondom - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:25 pm:

Congrats Rich, you deserve the accolades. Just think if Quinn had won, it would be the same ol’ same ol. ;)

  25. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:28 pm:

Rich’s new catchphrase has to be something along the lines of, “I drink the News-Gazette’s milkshake.”

  26. - Chicago Hack - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 2:42 pm:

That’s much better than your normal inclusion in the paper under the headline “Old Man Yells at Cloud”. Congrats.

  27. - thechampaignlife - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:36 pm:

Would the Dems not be better served to wait and see what comes in 2018? They would still have the 2020 election to put forward the referendum if they do not win back the mansion since the new districts do not go into effect until 2022.

In other words, why fold their hand before they see the cards they are dealt?

  28. - McLean county - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 7:55 pm:

Wait. They’re saying Rich was Niles’ wife on Fraiser?

    Oh. Mavis. Got it.

  29. - The_Equalizer - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 9:01 pm:

Until things like Citizen’s United are overturned, it’s hard to believe in real democracy any time soon, regardless of the maps.
