* A text message from a friend yesterday…
Someone keeps blaring the “Solidarity Forever” song on the conference call of the Lt. Gov’s task force to whack collective bargaining….lol
* Illinois Public Radio…
The task force is made of legislators, mayors and a library trustee. During the meeting, they approved recommendations like incentivizing schools to consolidate and encouraging municipalities to share equipment.
Then, came this proposal “to make collective bargaining permissive, instead of mandatory.”
Before they could vote, they were interrupted by the song of a banjo, then a choir singing the song “Solidarity Forever.” The chorus repeats the title phrase, then goes on to say “for the union makes us strong.”
The task force’s chair, Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti, tried to pushed on, saying “I suppose someone put us on hold, without mute…” when the song again began to play. It happened several more times, including as a coda until the call ended after Sanguinetti adjourned the meeting.
Even so, the proposal passed 15-1.

Sure there was an interrupting, but golly, those Unions sure showed Pat Quinn…
- Team Sleep - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 8:52 am:
A banjo-playing protester?! Sheila Simon…is that you?!
- wordslinger - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 8:56 am:
I’d blame Madigan, if I thought he knew how to operate a phone.
- Norseman - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 8:59 am:
What a surprise, a Rauner task force on consolidating government units passes an unrelated anti-union proposal.
- The Captain - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 8:59 am:
Illinois: weird, endearing.
- Stones - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:00 am:
An useless committee and an equally useless stunt.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:02 am:
I do enjoy when the Rauner Crew gingerly trots, no… gingerly places… gingerly places Ole Slip and Sue in her proper prop assignment and returns her safely without incident.
That’s really the win here; for Governor Rauner and Illinois.
- Henry Francis - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:04 am:
For those of you who had concerns whether the Lt. Gov was competent to be “Commander in Chief of Illinois”, you at least know now she can handle a prank phone call.

“Dear Trade Unions,

- 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:11 am:
That task force is useless. Seguinetti keeps asking people for a “move on” instead of a “motion” in the meetings.
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:13 am:
OW - respectively asking - what are you expecting unions to do right now? Election isn’t for another 11.5 months.
- Team Sleep - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:14 am:
Karen Hasara was a good Senator and good Mayor of Springfield, but having her on this task force is a joke. She’s been involved in a local “task force” for years and, since the group’s founding and efforts, nothing’s been done. Nothing. No offices have been shuttered or combined. No major services have been scaled back. What a waste of people’s time and energy - the Springfield way.

I’m interested to see who the lone ‘no’ vote was…

What I sm calling, very respectfully, “The Norseman Primer”, is about as good as it can be formulated as to the where and what the Labor Movement should be doing, or already doing until March 2016.
I think - Norseman - “recommented” it not too long ago in a discussion with - Honeybear -.
That. That’s what they could, and should be doing, “The Norseman Primer”
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:21 am:
OW - I need to be schooled up by Norseman on his primer!
Runbikeswim - Senator Holmes was lone no vote.
- Runbikeswim - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:23 am:
OK..The google was my friend and told me! Excuse my poor researching skills Rich!
- @MisterJayEm - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:25 am:
If one simply MUST prank a conference call with an anthem to trade unionism, let it be one by the Waco Brothers, i.e. https://youtu.be/8J1YhHC_xMc?t=15s The Wacos are nothing if not inherently disruptive.

Here it is…
===- Norseman - Monday, Sep 28, 15 @ 12:56 pm
Willy, here are the recommendations to Lynch you were looking for:
“Your focus now is to:
- convene your leadership to discuss your options;
- focus on ultimate goals - maintaining insurance, fair share … You need to consider pay freeze. MC pay has been frozen for 9 years.
- plan public PR campaign to inform folks of Rauner’s unreasonable demands;
- talk to fellow unions about unity against Rauner;
- keep in close contact with Dem leadership;
- plan for a strike only as a last result; and
- carefully adopt a political plan, i.e. protect your friends first and intervene in races where you have a good chance of making a difference.”
===
Shape it for all of Labor, and massage to macro ideas, there’s “The Norseman Primer”
- Honeybear - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:30 am:
OW for as many times as we have referred to it we need to just keep the “Norseman Primer” on our harddrives for such a moment. Paging Norseman. If you would be ever so kind. I promise I’ll save it this time.
- Honeybear - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:37 am:
Ah, there it is. So honestly from my vantage at AFSCME we are engaging feverishly every single one of those items. I’m actually personally taking on item 4 for my local. I met a lot of the trades sisters and brothers at the Edwardsville City Council meeting when they voted down the TA. I’m looking forward to the coordination of direct actions. Planning and organizing is well well underway.
- 360 Degree Turnaround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:52 am:
Thank you for the primer. From my vantage point - labor can tick off all of those.
- Honeybear - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:54 am:
Oh and GREAT JOB to whomever pulled of the Solidarity Forever action. Awesome job!
- Buzzie - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:57 am:
There are currently a number of State incentives centered on school district consolidations and unit school district formation. However, all consolidations/unit district formations require referenda. The fact is that over the past three decades there have been only a very small number of consolidations. There are two main reasons: communities do no want to relinquish sole ” ownership” of their schools and when the cost analysis numbers on run there is either no or little actual long-term savings. Another reason is that most attempted school consolidations occur south of Interstate 80 where the vast amount of school districts are located. New restructured school districts often involve revised school bussing operations which translate into higher costs and many students having longer travel times to and from school.
- Norseman - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 9:59 am:
Willy, much appreciation for the compliment.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 10:04 am:
- 360 -, that’s why it’s so good, it’s doable.
- Honeybear - I know yiu are out there fightin’ the good fight. I keep you my thoughts, as well as the individual members. AFSCME needs to do what needs to be done, and try to limit the damage already done. Good luck to you.
- Norseman -, welcome bud, well deserved.
- DuPage Bard - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 10:25 am:
There are 4 D legislators on that commission. Means at least 3 of them voted to get rid of collective bargaining. Any of the committee members talking about their votes yet, especially the D members who just went along with the “other side”?

Or they didn’t vote. Sham task force, set up by the sham wows in governor’s office.

@360, I believe the terms is “movant”
mov·ant
noun LAW
a person who applies to or petitions a court or judge for a ruling in his or her favor.

You’re setting the bar way to high for Slip and Sue.
Anytime she can be somewhere and comeback without a personal injury lawsuit in hand, we all win.
To the Specific,
With months on the Wheaton City Council, expecting her to understand Robert’s Rules of Order is a stretch.
Heck, even those presiding over Illinois’ legislative chambers often refer to the parliamentarian to run session. I’m not surprised by this.

Incentivizing = $$. Last I heard from El Capitan Rauner, Illinois es broke.
But, maybe the Lt. Gov could hash out a plan with the last guy to try this…I think his name was Pat something.

@ OW
I think there is some consternation in the Union ranks, as the Guv’s contract approvals , earlier this week, demonstrate. Many tradesmen I know are members of a PAC of tradesmen. The purpose is to not be beholden to one party. Basically, they are going to D’s & R’s and donating to the candidate that is going to play ball with them. I feel this is a game changer.
- Jake From Elwood - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 11:20 am:
In the past, these hearings have had several members attend via speakerphone. I don’t recall non-members being allowed on the line. So do we know whether this was orchestrated by one of the members of the committee, or was it infiltrated by someone else. Sounds like a lively meeting.

It’s going to boil down to this, unavoidable;
The Raunerite and IllinoisGO candidates are NOT a friend to the Labor Movement.
It’s up to all of Labor to identify races that they will be impact in, and defeat Raunerite and/or IllinoisGO candidates.
They can be Republicans or Democrats, but Raunerites on Labor, that’s the line.
We’ll see in March how it goes in the primaries.
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 11:38 am:
OW - I apologize for setting the bar too high for our Lt. Governor. Can I have a movant in praise of her?

This
Her mission was to offer ways to consolidate levels of government. Somehow she got sidetracked into anti-union recommendations. Par for the course on every issue so far this year. If it weren’t so sad it would be laughable.
- burbanite - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 12:04 pm:
Consolidation is exactly what the conversation would be, that is where the real and immediate savings are. But no, its all the Union’s fault.

Don’t see why not, “movant” away, I guess.
Do I hear a ’second’ for a movant in praise?
- Amanda Vinicky - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 12:17 pm:
The lone “no” vote was Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora).
Not all members of the task force were on the in attendance/on the call, from what I could gather listening. Here’s the list of members; http://www.illinois.gov/ltg/issues/localgovernments/Pages/Members.aspx
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 12:20 pm:
Seeing none, the movant fails for lack of a second. No praise today for slip and sue.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 20, 15 @ 12:20 pm:
Thanks - Amanda Vinicky -.
Thanks for the list too.

Not sure if anyone is paying attention to this thread any more, but…the task force you reference is an old one. This task force was set up by Executive Order 15-15 this year. It still equals sham: http://www.illinois.gov/Government/ExecOrders/Documents/2015/ExecutiveOrder2015-15.pdf

The thing about ole Slip and Sue is that she was llokibg for a job in the Quinn Adminstration in a Quinn agency.
She’s getting paid, Slip and Sue got “hired”.
That’s it.
