* From a reader…
Found a message from Liberty Principles PAC on my answering machine last night. The gist of it: Sam McCann is bad for State employees because he wants to trash our pensions. They played a garbled, mostly inaudible (at least on my phone) recording of him in a noisy room to support this, repeating one of the few audible parts several times, which I think was “Why wouldn’t we?”
I asked him if he could work up a transcript
…Adding… Mr. Proft has kindly sent along an official transcript…
Here’s Senator Sam McCann on state union workers:
“Is there any reasons we shouldn’t cut their pensions?”
“I don’t see any reason why, no. I know that’s very direct and blunt and to the point answer. But yea, why wouldn’t we?”
Sam McCann. Telling state employees he has their back…then stabbing them there when they aren’t looking.
Do we cut state pensions in Sam McCann’s eyes?
“But yea, why wouldn’t we?”
Paid for by Liberty Principles PAC (708) 568-1493
…Adding… Listen to it Proft’s official audio for yourself…

Dan Proft :: Spending Other People’s Money Terribly
_____::____
- Harry - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:21 pm:
“Garbled” hardly describes it. Actually, it sounds like someone purposefully ran that audio through a scrambler program and chose what to scramble and what to leave intelligible.
If I lived in his district, I would figure that anyone who would stoop this low deserves to be put down, and I would vote for McCann.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:23 pm:
McCann’s boat isn’t leaking, it’s sinking.
Labor, you see why education on McCann has been so criticsl since Jump Street?
Proft already is going after your fulcrum, and $2 million moved to TA PAC by Rauner, McCann will be drowning in 10 days, never to recover by March 15th.
Um, Labor… “What are you prepared to do?”.
Proft can gin this up at levels you know are unthinkable. Are your members “educated”?
Proft, he sees an opening. Will to be able to answer where it matters, in the ballot box?
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:24 pm:
- Bored Chairman -
Read. Get back to me. Ugh.
Even helping a victim you claim Rauner’s a victim. Pathetic.
- Sir Reel - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:25 pm:
Well I’m sure his Rauner generated/backed opponent will take care of State employees.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:27 pm:
Apologies, my phone re-cycled away from the other page.
My bad
- Anon - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:28 pm:
What will Rauner resort to next to get his way. Republican Party Ottawa take note of his actions. Aweful.
- Reality Check - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:29 pm:
If only state employees received this call, how did Proft obtain those numbers, and would it have anything to do with this? http://capitolfax.com/2016/02/08/another-clue/
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:29 pm:
There’s nothing principled about the liberties that are being taken with that sound cut.
It’s gibberish. It could be anybody saying anything.
There’s a reason why Proft named his “consultant” group after the villain from the original “House of Cards.”
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:36 pm:
Sheer garbage.
Someone is owed a refund for this crap.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:38 pm:
===how did Proft obtain those numbers,===
The same way IPI got them. Remember their little survey of state employees a while back?
- burbanite - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:38 pm:
In addition to being completely unintelligible, except coincidentally a few words that can be manipulated to say something they may not, was this taped in violation of the Illinois Eavesdropping act?
- Albany Park Patriot - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:39 pm:
Another day in Rauner’s Illinois.
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:40 pm:
===Illinois Eavesdropping act? ===
lol
That law was changed a while ago. And it’s a robocall. Take a breath.
Also, we now have the official audio from Proft, so listen again.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:42 pm:
Proft must be devastated that his produced spot doesn’t match his transcript.
How embarrassing. What does he tell the sugar daddies who are keeping him in business with their millions?
How does that happen, to such a principled professional?
- anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:42 pm:
@oswego is a little sweet on proft. Who knows why. The election is on the 15th. Its kinda dumb to pull this stunt now. What, thr unions arent gonna let their workers know? Or maybe they don’t know rauner hates them yet? Yeah right.
- Bored Chairman - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:45 pm:
Careful with your obsessions, OW.
To the post. I am absolutely enjoying watching both McCann and Dunkin getting pummeled. Labor and Rauner both should have given more thought to who they allied with.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:46 pm:
Here’s Senator Sam McCann talking about going to a Cardinals game:
Questioner: “Is there any reason that we shouldn’t go to the game?”
McCann: “(garbled) I don’t see any reason why (garbled) very direct (garbled) Why–why wouldn’t we?”
Sam McCann, telling friends he will help pay for tickets:
(This is a truncated excerpt from the above full clip): “(garbled) very direct (garbled)”
Do we go to the Cardinals ball game: In Sam McCann’s opinion: “Why, why wouldn’t we? Why wouldn’t we?”
Paid for by Liberty Principles PAC, 708-568-1493
Makes as much sense as Proft’s spot.
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:47 pm:
How do we know what context this audio clip comes from? Was he asked about the pensions of Rod Blagojevich or Derrick Smith?
MCCANN WAS A NO ON SB 1 IN 2013.
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:49 pm:
What McCann fully says is cut off when it sounds like he was adding a clarification or condition to what he meant.
McCann is a Republican. I don’t expect him to be in union’s pocket. What I do want is a legislator who is NOT in Rauner’s pocket.
- burbanite - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:50 pm:
Uh oh. Are you better off with the devil you know or the devil you don’t?
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:51 pm:
I agree with 360. What is the context and origination of this clip. Proft is good at “cut and paste”… just sayin’.
- RNUG - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:51 pm:
This latest tells me Proft / Benton / Rauner must be worried, in spite of all the (uncoordinated) dirty tricks to date, that McCann still has a chance of pulling it out because of state workers / union members. Otherwise, why the very targeted hattack?
I’m beginning to think even Nixon wouldn’t have stooped to these depths.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:52 pm:
Oh - Bored Chairman -,
My phone re-cycled a page. Now your a victim of my technology, lol
===@oswego is a little sweet on proft. Who knows why. The election is on the 15th. ===
What do you base that on, your ignorance?
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:53 pm:
===Otherwise, why the very targeted hattack? ===
When you’ve got your boot on his neck, you don’t ever let him up. Ever.
- hot chocolate - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:53 pm:
So he is being attacked by Liberty both for sticking with state workers on SB 1229 and then for supporting pension reform? I guess you really can have it both ways if you are unscrupulous/unethical enough eh Dan?
- Mama - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:53 pm:
It does not matter what McCann did in 2013. When McCann’s vote mattered the most, he voted with the unions on the arbitration bill.
To answer your question Willy, the union is working in support of McCann.
- said so - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:57 pm:
Interesting that bryce benton has not been vetted by the media. Could that rauner cash be the reason? The people of the district deserve facts about benton and his history. Its should not be just about what rauner who has become our own captain ahab chasing the whale.
- Mama - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 1:58 pm:
RNUG @ 1:51PM: “I’m beginning to think even Nixon wouldn’t have stooped to these depths.”
RNUG, you are right. This is Rauner’s “my way or the highway” war games.
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:03 pm:
In the context of this ad, what he did in 2013 matters very prominently. He stayed with state workers and voted against a pension theft law.
- 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:05 pm:
Slippery Principles must have polling that McCann is still ahead, they are still going negative with NO POSITIVE PIECES on Benton. Trying to get people to stay home on election day.
- RNUG - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:08 pm:
If you are wondering why Sam McCann is being attacked by Rauner and his various surrogates, all you need to know is these remarks Rauner alledgedly made to enemy Christine Kirk:
“I will bury her”
“… we’ll hurt you and your family”
“She will never get another job anywhere, ever. I will bankrupt her with legal fees,”
I don’t know if she has a family or not, but if she does, she better think twice about this.”

- There is power in a union... - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:16 pm:
A whole lot of people have voted to “cut our pensions.” Many of them are being backed by labor this time around with both eyes wide open.
This is about stopping the raunerites. I believe labor “gets it.” We’ll see March 15.
- RNUG - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:18 pm:
== When you’ve got your boot on his neck, you don’t ever let him up. Ever. ==
Yep, Rauner & Company is “all in” on it.
- Corporate Thug - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:20 pm:
Look, Bruce can’t afford to lose this one. After spending what will be at the end of the day $2+ million, He just can’t risk it.
But boy, wouldn’t it be something if McCann pulls it out..
- RNUG - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:24 pm:
== Are you better off with the devil you know or the devil you don’t? ==
IMO, the devil you know. At least he isn’t bought and paid for.

I’m a democrat in Sangamon county but I will be participating in my first primary this year just so I can support Sam. I didn’t care for how he ran his first campaign but I’d rather have him then a Raunerite.
- Younyun - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:26 pm:
I don’t see this one as that big of a deal. Multiple mailers have already been sent out by labor and phone calls are being made to union members. If they don’t already know by now that Benton is Rauner’s candidate, it doesn’t matter anyway. If state employees don’t get by now that a Rauner candidate will try and take everything away from them, then you don’t need any ads. A pension cut vs. elimination of pensions and collective bargaining is a no brainer.

He’s pretty good at promising to pay for things, he just never follows through apparently.

No, the SRJ and public court records.
- Me too - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:40 pm:
Just had to add that the voiceover is creepy, like really creepy.
- Mouthy - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 2:51 pm:
What garbage.
- Mama - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 3:10 pm:
This news on McCann is old and worthless. It is not worth mentioning since the union already knows how McCann voted in 2013, and they don’t care.
- walker - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 4:15 pm:
Proft as a radio guy, should have checked the final production quality of an ad associated with his good name.
- WiTuLo - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 4:22 pm:
I’m a left-leaning independent long time state employee and I will also be voting in my first primary this month to support Sam. He certainly isn’t my ideal candidate, but when the heat was on, he voted for me, so I’m voting for him. I’d take my chances on him any day over someone who is clearly a bought and paid for button pusher for the governor.

To piggyback some national political rhetoric, I think this Proft fellow is suffering from ” little hands syndrome “.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 1, 16 @ 10:18 pm:
I would suggest that if you are ever, ever in a situation where you have to believe either Proft or McCann, go with McCann every single time
