Rauner on an endorsement tour with Shimkus

* BND…
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner will endorse U.S. Rep. John Shimkus for reelection at a series of events on Monday.
Rauner has already made numerous favorable remarks about Shimkus, a Republican from Collinsville, but tomorrow the representative will officially have the governor’s support, said Steve Tomaszewski with Volunteers for Shimkus.
The pair will make the announcement at six different small events across District 15, which Shimkus currently represents.
“The Congressman plans to speak to the governor’s efforts in Springfield (on reforms and the economy),” Tomaszewski said.

Should be a short speech.

Who sought out who on this one? I can’t see how this really helps Shimpkus much. I guess with no Democratic opponent it can’t hurt…
- Anon - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:22 am:
I’m a little surprised by this, but then again, not much has happened for Southern Illinois during the Shimkus representation, so maybe this makes sense to someone.
- 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:22 am:
Does anyone expect Rauner to mention his support for term limits?
Me neither.
- Annonin' - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:23 am:
Now there is a bold move by the $uper$tar — not But since he is about as popular as a bag of Redi-Mix in a rain storm what else has he got to do? Listen to Durkin whine about special session, prepare Dunkin’ for the SA/USA interviews, ask Proft for money back.
Not many choices
- Blue Dog - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:23 am:
And just a week or so after Shimkus endorsed Benton, then lended his voice to the Marines hit against McCann.
I’m sure the two things aren’t related at all.

This should make McCarter think twice about siding with Rauner on future votes. Perhaps another crack in the SGOP unity behind the turnaround agenda? Not sure what issue Gov. Rauner could have with McCarter, anyone have any ideas?

One of his stops is listed as Stadium Grill in Mattoon during the lunch hour. Wonder if Reggie Phillips is goin’ to be on hand to get another $53,000 from Rauner??
- downstater - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:51 am:
Shimkus begged for this endorsement. And I don’t think you’ll hear Rauner mention term limits on this tour.
- LGHB - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:51 am:
There are so many ironies in what Rauner says/stands for/campaigns against going into the endorsement of Shimkus.
- Henry Francis - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:52 am:
Campaignin before governin
- 13th - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:01 pm:
term limits are valid only but not if they support me
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:21 pm:
The Fund EIU folks are planning to attend a couple of these events today. Rauner may actually have to face people he disagrees with — although they may refuse to let them in.
- MSIX - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:26 pm:
JJ’s Stadium Grill in Mattoon is a tiny place. If The Bruce insists on speaking inside, it will be easy to cherry-pick his audience.
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:54 pm:
They also changed the time at the Stadium Grill at the last minute. I’m sure that has no relationship to the folks who are planning to show up to protest with signs. No relationship to that at all.
- MSIX - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:55 pm:
I’m hearing that Prez Glassman from EIU is at JJ’s to speak with The Bruce. We’ll see if that happens.
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:57 pm:
Anyone with signs or an alternative point of view is being told “the room is full” in Mattoon. Right. They sure have a funny way of running these “town halls” to hear what their constituents believe.
- MSIX - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:05 pm:
Looks like The Bruce retreated to the kitchen or some small back room to avoid “those people.”
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:09 pm:
Not surprising. At his very core, Rauner is just too chicken to meet with people who disagree with him. That’s why he can vilify the other side so effectively because he’s actually not man enough to meet them and meet their arguments.

=== Rauner is just too chicken to meet with people who disagree with him===
I’ve met with him several times.
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:11 pm:
In public? It’s one thing to quietly meet behind closed doors and another to meet publicly.
- LGHB - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:40 pm:
Went to the Mattoon event. Inside the meeting room were pro-Rauner, pro-Shimkus people. Rauner spoke about the MAP funding & stated that Madigan was holding everything up & how Illinois is lagging behind the national average economically & with jobs. EIU funding supporters were all made to sit outside the meeting room & afterwards were not allowed into the meeting room where Rauner & Shimkus were shaking hands, greeting people. An EIU student tried to enter the meeting room to ask a question but was chased off by an elderly man wearing a Shimkus sticker. The same elderly man that also spoke on Shimkus’ behalf. I spoke with one of the organizers of the EIU funding group that was present & they were less than happy that they were not allowed in the meeting room despite arriving plenty early to find a seat.
- MSIX - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:48 pm:
Apparently the EIU crowd has been removed from the restaurant. So much for a “public” event.
- Chucktownian - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:03 pm:
I’m shocked. Shocked I tell you. Well we shouldn’t have expected any better from Rauner.
Everything with him is pretty much a sham.
- Ben Cook - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:11 pm:
Clearly Rauner values the money Shimkus raises from special interest groups who have business in front of the Energy and Commerce Committee (think drug and oil companies) more than he does term limits.
- logic not emotion - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:40 pm:
If I were Shimkus, I would not have wanted to do this.
- Mama - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:52 pm:
I can’t believe Shimkus thinks Rauner can help him get elected. Not allowing the voters in the meeting is 100% wrong.
- Highland, IL - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 3:06 pm:
McCarter probably won’t be bringing his hog to the Capitol this year.
- Mama - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 4:21 pm:
Being governor or a US legislator means you represent all of the people in IL not a selected few. Shimkus, maybe its time to retire.
- Politix - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 6:54 pm:
An endorsement from Rauner would be like the kiss of death in my circle.

lots of hand gestures and “makin’ myself avaliable” verbage. From the field reports, availiability … ehh, not so much
