  1. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:26 pm:

    Charleston, Macomb, Carbondale, Edwardsville…

You’re towns are on the “Watch List”

Destrying you towns too is the feature, not the bug.

Once Eastern, Western, and both Southerns are gone, how long do your towns survive?

“Vote Accordingly”, university towns… the question has been asked and answered about these universities, what will you all say March 15th to your decimation?

  2. - jerry 101 - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:27 pm:

Hey, don’t forget about Chicago, Willy. Northwest side and South side are also targets. And, can GSU be far behind?

  3. - Horse w/ No Name - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:29 pm:

    Rep. Phillips, comment?

    Rep. Hammond, anything?

    Rep. Pritchard, thoughts?

Rep. Brady, did you want to say something?

    Anyone?

  4. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:31 pm:

    This is structural reform.

People who don’t think government does anything, this is a hard lesson on how many services it actually provides for all of us.

  5. - AC - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:34 pm:

Reducing union rights is the primary goal, but destroying public institutions like universities isn’t a bad consolation prize for Rauner because he only believes in private for profit institutions.

  6. - Stumpy's bunker - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:34 pm:

Glassman’s question is appropriate and fair.

Problem is, Rauner’s answer will be more campaign-style, non-specific, because-Madigan rhetoric.

I don’t think any of us buy it, I dare say even servile, cringing office-holding Raunerbots.

We are left to guess what the endgame is.

Advantage: Rauner. But not in the long run.

  7. - I'm part of the problem - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:35 pm:

I’ve met Glassman, great guy, making hard choices he has no choice but to make. I hope the likes Phillips and Righter enjoy this short ride of faux relevancy because in two years when the description hobby grows boring they’ll be left little to show for it. #RIPILGOP

  8. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:35 pm:

All of this destruction so taxpayers can save 0.0125% of their income? If you have an adjusted gross of $100K, that’s about $100 bucks a month you’re saving. That’s a cell phone bill.

But apparently it has become Bruce Rauner’s Waterloo. What an idiot. He’s sending Illinois over the cliff for a lousy $100 per month.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:37 pm:

CSU and NEIU have Democratic members voting for higher ed, and MAP. It’s Raunerites.

Haven’t heard how dire GSU is at, at the moment, but Western, Eastern, CSU, abd Southern are dyingbon the vine, I know that.

    With respect.

  10. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:38 pm:

    ===can save 0.0125% of their income===

    Dude, it’s 1.25 percent. More than a half a week’s pay.

  11. - Norseman - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:39 pm:

And the best GOP response we get comes from Righter, Rezin and Barickman - House please come back. You expect your hurting schools to take that as an answer. Do you think folks are that stupid. Do your folks a favor and vote for the House approp bill. Tell Rauner that you’ll vote for the override. That’s what will help your schools. I’m embarrassed for you that you hold on to the pablum from the gov that procurement reform will help pay for it or loan forgiveness will pay for it. Pass the higher ed bill and tell Rauner his way of paying for it is to negotiate a complete budget. A budget that will reallocate resources within the construct of all the state’s needs - including higher ed.

  12. - IllinoisBoi - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:40 pm:

The death of Illinois’ public universities is the endgame. Then they’re supposed to be magically resurrected as for-profit private institutions like DeVry — or Trump University.

  13. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:44 pm:

And with the destruction of public universities, you have the end of many public employees, and their unions.

  14. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 4:52 pm:

I was told there would be no math…

    5% - 3.75% = 1.25%

    1.25% X $100,000 = $1,250

$1,250 is about $100 per month. A cell phone bill.

  15. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:02 pm:

President Glassman’s question in the 10:51 tweet is answered in the 10:50 tweet: the end game is to starve the state universities to death, then privatize them.

  16. - jerry 101 - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:02 pm:

Sorry Willy, didn’t put that together.

GSU is in better shape than some, but not in great shape.

Based on GSU’s 6/30/15 financial statements, they had about $36 million Cash and investments on hand. They received about $24 million in state appropriations in 2015, plus any MAP grants and other state grants. So, assuming all other things being equal, they can survive up to 18 months after June 30, 2015 without state appropriations (probably less due to lack of MAP grants in FY 2016). So, they’re going to be hurting come fall semester as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear about GSU making cutbacks in the not too distant future to try to extend out how long they can go.

  17. - @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:02 pm:

    This is the plan.

  18. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:05 pm:

Endgame? Endgame? This is his endgame. Bruise Ruiner gets to play governor in retirement. Why not fish or play golf? What in the world do you think he did as part of his working career? I know the type. I’ve made a lot of money for people who fish and play golf all day.

  19. - Wensicia - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:06 pm:

    It’s called #Winning.

  20. - AC - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:10 pm:

The math works out even more favoribly if you consider that state taxes are deductible for someine who itemizes, so for someone 47th Ward’s example the effective increase would be closer to 1% for someone in a 20% tax bracket.

On the other side of the comparison, consider how high tax rates will need to be raised when all the costs of the destruction are taken into account, I suspect we will look back fondly on our 5% tax rate.

Comparing the destruction of social services, public universities, and other important governmental programs/services with an immeasurable human impact, with even a week’s worth of pay spread through the year, and I’ll happily pay more in taxes. So, compared with the destruction, a 2% increase would seem inconsequential to me.

  21. - thoughts matter - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:10 pm:

It’s not a lot of money when spread out over all the taxpayers. However, a lot of our citizens can’t think past the end of their distain for state employees and legislators. I am amazed at my ‘friends’ on facebook that are blindly following Rauner because they believe his ’shaking up Springfield’ rhetoric. Many of them are the same people who are blinding following Trump.

That being said - there’s a whole lot of parents and grandparents who are going to wonder what happened when their offspring can’t go to college in Illinois.

  22. - Peon - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:31 pm:

There is no concern if they survive or not.

But the Governor does not understand that you lose political strategic control and leverage in a hurry as soon as you cross an invisible line on this path. Is this CSU+EIU+Catholic Charities ? Who knows ? But there is always a line in political chicken that is too far. In contrast, you can bust out a business down to nothing.

  23. - @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 5:58 pm:

An interesting article about the common characteristics of failing states (hint: insufficient revenue) — http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/03/state-budget-crisis/473157/

    – MrJM

  24. - Stumpy's bunker - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:21 pm:

    Peon’s on it.

That could be the formula prompting the Big Backlash: CSU + EIU + Catholic Charities.

  25. - Stumpy's bunker - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:25 pm:

Even the best-natured horse will tolerate being kicked at a certain point.

  26. - Stumpy's bunker - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:30 pm:

Rather: …up to a certain point.

  27. - AC - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:52 pm:

MrJM - interesting and very relevant article.

  28. - Austin Blvd - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:53 pm:

Used to be that a legislator wanted to protect the assets in their legislative district. Now they just want to protect their asses from Rauner.

  29. - South Illinoisian - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 6:55 pm:

Governor Rauner’s endgame is the complete privatization of every state asset or function.

  30. - illinoised - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 7:00 pm:

Oswego Willy, I live in one of the towns you mentioned. One of our university trustees, responding to a Facebook post which criticized our GOP state rep for what is happening to our town, responded by criticizing Madigan. When reminded (sarcastically) that Madigan is not our state rep, the trustee (local business owner) deleted her post.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 7:08 pm:

    - illinoised -

First, my sympathies. The anxiety has to be tough.

Second, don’t be put off by the ignorant. Educate your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, “bowling partners”, anyone and everyone and…

    … “Vote Accordingly”

The fun abd faves are well past over. Good on you to point out your state Representative. You know the next steps.

    Best of luck, sincerely.

    Oswego Willy

  32. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 7:14 pm:

    “fun and games”

  33. - the Cardinal - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 8:29 pm:

I’ll bet EIU et al would Gladly take some of the money that was used to prop up a certain senators favorite university for several years a few years back?

  34. - illinois manufacturer - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 9:09 pm:

WIU a a Call vote Curtis against Hammond.WIU got some students from a failed private college. No one is coming to buy our old academic infrastructure. If we go its over. I think WIU can last another year but it won’t be in good shape.’CSU needs a budget by fall.

  35. - btowntruth - Thursday, Mar 10, 16 @ 11:02 pm:

    illinoised:
It wasn’t a WIU trustee was it?

  36. - Abe the Babe - Friday, Mar 11, 16 @ 8:10 am:

Rauner wants a pound of flesh in exchange for a tax increase that everyone knows is inevitable. Madigan doesn’t want to give a pound of flesh for a tax increase that has to happen.

    there it is folks.

  37. - Chucktownian - Friday, Mar 11, 16 @ 9:47 am:

Just sick about everything going on at EIU and in Charleston. The resumes are just flying out of town right now. Some have already left and others are trying valiantly to leave. A sad state of affairs.

  38. - illinoised - Friday, Mar 11, 16 @ 11:51 am:

    Dear btowntruth,
