Question of the day

Wednesday, Jun 1, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* After last night’s dreadful end to the spring session, what’s the one thing you don’t want people to do? Make sure to explain yourself.

  1. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:30 pm:

Don’t stop talking to each other.

Both sides, be commited to talking. Do not stop communicating.

Back channels, meetings, drinks, emails, whatever.

    Do NOT stop talking.

I’ll send Cannoil for cripes sake if y’all keep honestly talking.

    Capiche?

    Don’t stop talking.

  2. - Try-4-Truth - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

    Pass a short-term, 6 month budget for FY 17.

My agency will be right back where we are now in January if they do that.

I’d rather take the pain now for a few extra months so see a long-term solution crafted.

  3. - YSW - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:36 pm:

    Try to humiliate each other.

This horrific impasse will not end in abject humiliation for any of the principals, because powerful people fight to avoid humiliation above all.

My utmost respect will go to those who build golden bridges for the other side, or at least bronze ones if they get the job done.

  4. - Huh? - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:37 pm:

Continue doing what they are doing. It ain’t working, so do something different.

  5. - Ghost - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:38 pm:

I dont want the working grps to go partisan or give up.

They need to bring the working groups back together with an agreed neutral person to work out aticking points. then they need to publish the agreed budget with bipartisan names on it and tell all of the leaders this is the deal we the people have teached

  6. - Curious - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:39 pm:

Do not communicate by press release, Sneed leaks or editorial board interviews. Do not sandbag the other side with exclusive interviews that run in Sunday’s paper. Do not send surrogates scurrying to AM radio.

Have your communications strategy in place to combat anticipated attacks, do the necessary retail politics and make your case to the public at local events, aka talk to voters. But recognize that nobody’s winning right now so you’re not going to help yourself with savvy PR consultant advice.

  7. - Kfc - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:43 pm:

Don’t let human services (or the people they help) suffer any more.

And DON’T pay anyone in Springfieldd for NOT doing their jobs. Ridiculous.

  8. - illinoised - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:44 pm:

I ask that Governor Rauner and all members of the General Assembly do NOT gloat about the final outcome when the budget impasse has ended. All of you share the blame for why we got to this point, and for the negative (long term, in many cases) impact on Illinois citizens, businesses, social programs, and public universities.

  9. - Give Me A Break - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:45 pm:

Don’t stop meeting and trying to find a solution. Even a six month budget is better than what is happening now.

Human services cannot go another extended period of time without being paid, laying off staff and being told No by banks when they need to borrow operational funds. I never thought I would see an Illinois where a governor and lawmakers seem to have lost their souls and seem willing to let their fellow citizens become cannon fodder in a political war.

  10. - Chicago Taxpayer - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:47 pm:

Don’t try to “win” by dividing. Don’t be parochial and insular. Don’t pit one part of the state against another. Stand up, at a critical time, for all of Illinois.

  11. - Keyrock - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:47 pm:

    Pass a stopgap–any stopgap.

Draw back from the edge of the abyss, finish the job, and pass a real budget (with real revenue).

  12. - BBG Watch - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:47 pm:

DO NOT GIVE UP! Go for a “real” budget - not just something to hold us over for another few months. People are hurting … they’re depending on you … as elected officials you need to do your job!

  13. - cdog - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:49 pm:

I do not want the Governor to continue to speak for Dem leaders, caucus, or members.

He continues to use his road show as an opportunity to make statements that are completely unacceptable at best and lean more towards being outright fabrication. His only purpose with this is to manipulate, all the whole knowing the truth is not how he presents it.

“They want this, they want that.” This is a type of mockery that is completely unacceptable at this level. When has a democrat said they want a massive tax hike? Crisis? Hostages? Leverage?

Rauner’s better spirit needs to overcome his
    nature. Stop speaking for Democrats.

  14. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:50 pm:

DON’T keep using Illinois, and the People of Illinois, as a pawn in a Grand Masters Challenge. Servant Leadership over Self-Serving Interests. To Reps such as Bourne and Jimenez, either stand true to your words or look for another way to “serve”. November is closer than you would like.

  15. - Flynn's mom - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:50 pm:

Stop all of the hating!! Why can’t we grow up and address the real issues and quit trying to one up each other?

  16. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:50 pm:

Do not pursue the “impasse” declaration from the ILRB.

Return to the table Governor Rauner. Forcing us to accept you Last, Best, and Final offer or go out on strike will destroy both the workforce and effective state government. The only way we’ve been able to keep going is because of the state workforce. It certainly wasn’t because of the superstars’ performance thus far. We lose the workforce we lose the state.

WE CANNOT HAVE THE GREAT LABOR WAR DURING THE SUMMER OF HORROR.

As much as you want to make AFSCME the sin eater it will never wash the sins of the past away.

Return to the table and negotiate.

  17. - Beaner - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:53 pm:

I do not want to see a additional issuances of GO Bonds. We are a wealthy State with a significant infrastructure and we have no need for further bond issuances. Issuing Bonds is a tax hike delayed and is wrong according to Sham Governor Ruiner in February 2016. On this we concur.

  18. - NoNews - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:54 pm:

I don’t want rank and file to stop talking to each other. Last night was nasty, but them working together is the solution.

  19. - @MisterJayEm - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:55 pm:

“After last night’s dreadful end to the spring session, what’s the one thing you don’t want people to do?”

Please don’t pit Downstate versus Chica– What?

    He did?

    Already?!?

    Never mind…

    – MrJM

  20. - unspun - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 12:59 pm:

There seems to be an appetite for a fix, if only short term. It would be helpful if the Governor toned down the rhetoric on his roadshow. Cullerton was baited by the media yesterday and could have launched verbal grenades (he would have been well within his rights to do so) but he chose the high road in order to maintain peace. Learn, Governor. Learn.

  21. - Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:01 pm:

I don’t want people to forget the oath they took for Illinois

  22. - WIUOvlivion - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:02 pm:

Find a way forward that benefits as many of the state’s residents as possible. Let the force of the better argument prevail. (In Federalist 1, Hamilton asked whether it is possible that we “are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice,” or whether accident and force must always dominate. Good question, and still unanswered.)

  23. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:03 pm:

Don’t allow a repeat of the current year by giving Governor Rauner a “clean” k-12 approp. All or nothing. They’ve had a year to prove that Rauner’s reforms are never going to get 60 votes. I don’t know why the Superstars haven’t learned that lesson yet, but I don’t think we can wait much longer.

The governor needs to do his job. Don’t let him off the hook again by funding schools only.

  24. - Mama - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:07 pm:

Governor - Stop doing what you have been doing for the passing 18 months. It is not working! It is insane to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results! DO BETTER!

Learn how to compromise. Learn how to negotiate a deal where both parties are winners. That is what the voters want.

  25. - Mama - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:07 pm:

Don’t forget to take care of the people of IL who truly need your help.

  26. - Cubs in '16 - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:17 pm:

    Don’t stop believin’
    Hold on to the feelin’…..

  27. - Mama - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:18 pm:

Do NOT throw the teachers or state workers and the retirees under the bus for a couple of bucks! You have already destroyed enough lives via social services.

  28. - Saluki - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:20 pm:

    Don’t follow the leaders

  29. - Earnest - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:25 pm:

I don’t want them to pass a budget unless it leaves no hostage behind.

  30. - Uneasy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:36 pm:

To echo many previous comments, DON’T pass a stopgap bill. It seems like many in the public aren’t personally harmed by this crisis so a stopgap will keep that from happening.

Compromise without immense public pressure hasn’t happened in the last 12-16 months, so why not up the pressure? Pass something with language that ensures schools don’t open, all public services shut down, and state employees don’t get paid until full appropriations are approved.

Get everyone, and I mean everyone, angry and maybe we’ll get something accomplished.

  31. - A Modest Proposal - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 2:11 pm:

I don’t like it, but I have to agree with Uneasy… last year they took away the pressure points. I would want those pressure points to stay, to force us to have a budget.

  32. - blue dog dem - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 2:21 pm:

Don’t accept the status quoe. politics of the past got us where we are today. Not saying Rauner is right on anything, but tax and spend has got to slow down.

  33. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 2:45 pm:

    == Mama - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:18 pm:

Do NOT throw the teachers or state workers and the retirees under the bus for a couple of bucks!===

They can’t throw them under. They’re driving the bus.

  34. - Keyser Soze - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:01 pm:

    Gloat. No need to explain.

  35. - Illinois Bob - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:07 pm:

Don’t keep expecting that rational people are running Illinois government and that the power brokers in Springfield give two whits about the well being of the state.

There’s only one answer here….MORTAL COMBAT! Two (or three) persons enter, one person leaves….with the power to set the agenda and budget.

Master (Madigan) Blaster (Cullerton) against “Alton Road Warrior” Rauner.

This certainly isn’t any more ridiculous than what’s been happening down there.

Who would be “Aunty Entity”? Rich, your table is waiting….

  36. - railrat - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:18 pm:

don’t cancel the appointment(s) you may have with real estate sales persons, talk with real resolve to your spouse/partner/family and make every attempt to flee this sorry state asap. what a sad comment for a state so complex and with so much to offer !!! sad but so true….sheesh

  37. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:55 pm:

I don’t want union members and households to vote for Republicans, especially the seven who wrote the letter in support of AFSCME to get a fair contract but repeatedly turned their backs on their constituents when it counted most.

Some Republican legislators in Missouri stood up for their constituents and voted against RTW–even in the face of attacks and threats from the very rich backers of anti-union legislation. Not this craven bunch.

  38. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 4:01 pm:

Avoid the level of discourse provided by the governor and his crew. Focus on the need for a balanced budget and reject unneeded political one-upmanship.

  39. - peon - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 4:48 pm:

Don’t stay home on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November.

  40. - walker - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 6:16 pm:

Don’t run your mouth unless you have a real accomplishment to report.

Rich: Naps are good. Vacations are better. Don’t let these people wear you down.

  41. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 7:01 pm:

    Don’t kid yourself.

–“I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions.”–

    Dorothy Day

  42. - foster brooks - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 7:01 pm:

don’t call for a federal takeover

  43. - steve schnorf - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 9:44 pm:

Don’t blindside each other That is very close to the ultimate small p political sin. Make a phone call first. That will take away a fair amount of the bridge burning that’s been going on.

  44. - mokenavince - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 10:35 pm:

This is a battle between leadership,it’s time for a mutiny. The house members have to stand up to their leader. And do what they were elected to do serve the people.
