Not computer literate enough to provide a link, but if you google “Monty Python Splunge” I think that probably shows the type of Trib meeting Ferro had that came up with “tronc”. Although maybe it reflects a Rauner meeting with his people.
“I remember seeing Verne Gagne face off against Tronc Pazandak on the DuMont Network’s ‘Wrestling from Marigold’ — Ol’ Verne sure whipped him but good!”
A dangerous combination of alcohol and cough syrup sweeping the rap world and millenials, similar to sizzurp. E.g. “I’m sorry baby, I was krunk on TRONC when I said those things.”
Ferro’s attempt to break the record for most major Chicago newspapers heavily damaged by an owner. (Murdoch and Lord Black are currently tied with him, with one each.)
“Murdoch and Lord Black are currently tied with him, with one each.”
One could make a strong argument that Sam Zell’s damages to the Tribune far exceeded the Sun-Times losses under Murdoch. But in any event, Ferro makes them both look like Katharine Graham.
My point is that this guy must be doing something right to have been able to make that kind of money. No one should kid themselves. The Tribune is and always has been a for profit business. And in business, yes, making money is the measure of success. I don’t like the name or what he is doing to the newspaper either, but it is his business. It is not the community’s. He bought it with his money. He gets to call it whatever he wants.
My point was that the guy must be doing something right to have made all that money. The Tribune is and always has been a for-profit business. The employees there don’t work for free. If this is what a guy who has been successful in business thinks it takes to be able to keep paying them and get a rate of return on his investment, maybe people should defer to him. And yes, in business, making money is the measure of success. Otherwise, employees don’t get paid. I don’t like the name either. But it is his business, not the community’s. He gets to call it whatever he wants.
