Well, that’s a relief
Thursday, Jun 23, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller * Gov. Rauner just finished speaking to the Crain’s Chicago Business editorial board…
The governor explained that the state’s stack of unpaid bills would be too big to go that long without a full budget. He didn’t say what he would be willing to do (or the Turnaround Agenda issues he’d drop) to avoid such a disaster, however.

“Who knows” but he doesn’t think it’ll go for four years? You know what he also didn’t think? That he’d be running for a second term.

Rauner the Victim…
Rauner the bystander.
@RonSandack: I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate. - Ron Sandack, 9/28/15
The plan has been since the inauguration to hurt whatever will “drive the results”
I’m embarrassed for those fooled by Bruce Rauner.
- Huh? - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 2:50 pm:
“Who knows” but he doesn’t think it’ll go for four years?”
Just 3 years, 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
We are already 1 year, 11 months and 23 days into an administration that hasn’t done anything to pass a budget. What is another 2 years?

The governor of a state is supposed to be “the buck stops here” leader of that state. Rauner needs to accept that responsibility.

LOL, so Stacky isn’t too big yet? Just how big is he gonna have to get before he’s “too big?”
Munger estimated in March that backlog of unpaid bills could be $10 billion by July 1. Apparently, that’s not “too big.”
The backlog was $4.3 billion when Rauner took office. Apparently, that was “too small.”
- Square Pegs - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:00 pm:
He’s insane.

===The governor explained that the state’s stack of unpaid bills would be too big to go that long without a full budget.===
What business person would even consider going four years without being paid while they continue providing Illinois goods and services? I am shocked that more vendors of the state have not stopped providing goods and services as of today. How much longer can the vendors continue doing so without going bankrupt?
- Juvenal - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:01 pm:
=== who knows? ===
Um, shouldn’t you and your budget director?
He’s wrong, BTW. Legally and fiscally, there is no limit to how large the backlog can get.
Presumably at some point, vendors will either collapse or refuse to provide services, but there is every reason to think that the state will continue to stall that day by passing piecemeal budgets to keep the hostages alive, and that the governor’s office will continue to “warn” folks as they warned Mt. Sterling that criticizing the governor for failing to keep his promises has “consequences.”
So, it will end when the governor decides he is ready to stop stalling.
- Thoughts Matter - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:02 pm:
When he was inaugurated, no one truly thought we’d go this long without a budget. His comptroller seems pretty sure we’ve reached the end of our rope. I’d suggest he start governing and leading- time to quit with the ‘who knows’ stuff.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:06 pm:
The Raunerite goal is to keep hurting as many people as possible…
… blame Madigan for it…
… and when at the cost of the poor, needy, and those “not him”
“Simple”
Rauner proves, again and again…
People. Don’t. Matter.
People don’t matter to Bruce Rauner

Possible question of the day;
Knowing what we know now, if the GA had it to do over again, should they have extended the tax hike?
Not suggesting they were wrong not to do so, I don’t think its fair to say they should have predicted the current state of affairs. Just curious if thoughts on the matter differ now.
- Norseman - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:11 pm:
Quick, we need a graphic for Stacky.
- Stones - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:11 pm:
So what’s the tipping point? Somewhere between one year and four years? Shameful!
- Triple fat - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:12 pm:
People apparently don’t matter to the GOP members of the General Assembly, as well.

–DNR also did its best to try and get rid of the Illinois State Museum system. They are not the right agency to fold IHPA into.–
You could fold them into a Burrito Supreme, $75K a year ain’t gonna cut it on maintenance for 56 historic sites.
- Henry Francis - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:24 pm:
Why didn’t anyone at Crain’s ask the follow up questions?
“Why don’t you know?”
“How big of a backlog of bills will require the passing of a budget?”
The Gov demonstrates such a lack of respect towards the people of Illinois, he just says ridiculously dishonest or ignorant things and runs away. Meep meep.

My takeaway from watching is the video is as follows:
- Bankruptcy the only option for CPS
- GOP may pick up seats in November.
- Dems may pick up seats in November.
- Crain’s: Maybe what you’re doing isn’t working. Maybe it’s time for a rethink? Rauner: Nope.

===ask the follow up questions===
“Last question” had already been announced.
- Formerly Known as Frenchie M - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:30 pm:
These “more powerful” measures Rauner is talking about on the video — and the “not going to speculate what happens later this summer” — seems to be directly about AFSCME and a strike, no?
- wordslinger - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:30 pm:
===ask the follow up questions===
The Crain’s edit board has been very tough on Rauner on his inability to quantify the benefits of the Turnaround Agenda, his big-deficit budget proposals, the mushrooming bill backlog and for not honoring contracts.
Collectivists. What do they know about economic freedom?

This from a question about Rauner being the state’s cheerleader?
Wow.
- Handle Bar Mustache - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:38 pm:
Crain’s guy to Rauner (verbatim):
“By every measure the state is worse off since you became Governor.”
Read it and weep.
- Illinoised - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:38 pm:
I was one of the few people in my predominantly Republican downstate county who did not vote for Rauner. Our county seat is the site for a public university whose future is in jeopardy. One of our university trustees supports Rauner. Local businesses are suffering but the owners still back Rauner. Beam me up, there is no intelligent life here.
- Formerly Known as Frenchie M - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 3:46 pm:
BTW — I did like the jab at Rauner about “heroics”(right after Rauner praises the ‘heroics’ of his budget folks):
Crain’s: “I’d prefer to think of the real heroes as the social service providers.”

=Knowing what we know now, if the GA had it to do over again, should they have extended the tax hike?=
Of course. It was the logical thing to do then as it is now. But logic and politics rarely co-exist these days.

OW, what results? The destruction of IL?

How about 2 or 3 years? Does he think IL can survive 3 years without a budget?

Our state has become a joke. Friends, who aren’t particularly political people have asked me:
1) What in heavens name is going on with all the murders in Chicago and is it even safe to come visit?
2) Is your governor sane?
They hear about our bizarre issues on TV in their states. Maybe our governor and Chicago’s mayor find this to be their claim to fame? As if this is some soap opera and they get their names publicized more often this way?
- dray - Thursday, Jun 23, 16 @ 9:21 pm:
Please watch the video.
IMHO, Governor Rauner is not a good person. His motivation and ultimate goal, which he will inflict unmeasurable pain to obtain, does not ultimately benefit the citizens of Illinois. It will benefit those who contribute the millions to perpetuate the “agenda.” Class warfare.

== … so Stacky isn’t too big yet? Just how big is he gonna have to get before he’s “too big?” ==
If you follow that thought to it’s logical conclusion, until it is big enough that Illinois can not recover and the US Congress or SCOTUS will have to grant bankruptcy rights to states.
