“The wasteland that is Illinois”

Wednesday, Jun 29, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The Daily Show took a whack at Illinois yesterday, with a not so flattering focus on the governor. Also, the bit where Rep. Ron Sandack completely denies blame for anything whatsoever is truly something to behold

Ron Sandack is the phoniest phony in Illinois government. That’s an incredibly high bar.

He just has no shame. Good for Dan Biss to call him out.

  2. - CMSer - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:30 am:

    Very funny, sad and embarrassing.

  3. - Fusion - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:35 am:

Hilarious! The Owl could not have looked more ridiculous. And his antics put a spotlight on how out-of-touch much of the GOP is. They think that “taxpayers” and “business owners” face the same level of need as homeless youth, the elderly, mentally ill, and other at-risk populations.

  4. - Juvenal - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:36 am:

Republican lawmakers could not have a worse face than Representative Sandack.

He needs to try to atleast fake caring about the fact that one person has committed suicide while waiting for him to do his job.

“I sleep well at night”? Was that really his quote?

  5. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:37 am:

    Dear Owl,

    You are, indeed, a caricature.

To take you seriously now, is to treat a mocking farce as historically accurate.

I’m so embarrassed for you. This is you now, Owl, a punchline, a prop, a person so “corrupted” if truth that you can be publicly ridiculed and those listening either shrug at the rebuke or laugh at your absurdity.

What even more sad is that when you hold… yourself, mind you… as the true leader of “what’s really goin’ on”, your caricature is delicious because it seems no one has let you in on the joke… that is your position.

“Who”… “Who”… Who will help you?

I do read, often lately it seems, the nominations you received for the earned Golden Horseshoe, even the one I wrote, almost “whimsically”… how a person with such a lack of self-worth in the discussion was manipulated in such a way that he could be trotted out…

    … sorry…

…trots himself out as the “Leader” of false brovado and unhinged anger, at times, and just can’t see what others see now.

“Did I say something that struck a nerve?”

I doubt it. Odds are the Owl will enjoy this, relish his position as the owned prop of words even some “who” believe them won’t say publicly.

But, Ron Sandack is a leader. He tells us all so.

Maybe that is what strikes a nerve… to the funny bone.

  6. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:38 am:

Sandack’s bought and paid for. He needed Rauner to keep the Uihlein’s of the world off his back.

Still, why go on TV with that crazy talk? That was a choice.

  7. - Winnin' - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:41 am:

Both Rauner and Sandack owe it to Illinoisans to pull a David Cameron and resign to make room for better players.

  8. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:43 am:

    My absolute favorite line:

“With bickering Muppets running the state.”

    Classic

And I certainly hope Ron Sandack was just being funny because if not that’s just sad. Nope. I’m not to blame. He’s to blame. Thanks Ron. You’re perpetually 3 years old.

  9. - Jocko - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:44 am:

Nice piece. It’s telling when “fake news” is more informative than mainstream television and print.

To see 2013 Ron Sandack reduced to this saddens me.

  10. - Indochine - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:47 am:

I’m a fan, but Sandack needs to take a step back. That was embarrassing.

Good thing nobody watches The Daily Show anymore.

  11. - Lomez - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:47 am:

Biss must not have been on the Senate Committee that got its collective derriere handed to it by Nuding on why the line item veto retort is unadulterated BS here. So he’s still out there trying that because voters don’t understand.

  12. - Stones - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:48 am:

I’m really appalled that Sandack refuses to take any responsibility for this mess.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:50 am:

I’m excited the Owl sleeps well on weekends.

What rational human being involved in this says they sleep well… on weekends?

That’s arguably the most pathetic way to respond to “how do you sleep at night”

    Rep. Sandack,

You beat Uihline, and now you are… “this”?

That bed in the weekends must be lumpy with all that Uihline money in the mattress.

  14. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:51 am:

    Lomez:

He most certainly could have used his line item veto. Just because doing so would be complicated doesn’t mean he couldn’t have done it.

  15. - Illinois Bob - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:51 am:

So “The Daily Show, which is just a little bit to the left of the late Hugo Chavez, puts the hurt on a Republican governor. What a surprise.

There’s plenty to lampoon about Madigan and Cullerton who created this problem during decades of their state mismanagement, but, gee, that doesn’t get much traction on the show. Again, what a surprise.

  16. - Lomez - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:52 am:

Instead Edgar Republicans are leading the charge to focus on important issues like Ron Sandack Made Weird Faces and Doesn’t Care.

Meanwhile the Professor keeps pumping out substance free inanity about Not Sleeping Well because hey we’re all in this together. Deep talk.

  17. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:52 am:

Once again Bob plays the victim. Maybe you and Ron Sandack should get together and lament about how nothing is their fault and that it’s not fair that they are being blamed at all.

    Grow. Up.

  18. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:53 am:

Classic! Got a great chuckle out of that! Then remembered this is not a comedy skit, it’s our sad reality

  19. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:54 am:

    Lomez:

The focus is on Ron Sandack continually acting like a 3 year old.

He needs to stop away from Twitter and, really, any sort of media whatsoever. He makes himself an easy target for ridicule. He’s bringing this on himself.

  20. - New Slang - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:58 am:

Bob, take in the humor. I’m not far left, far right, far anything. I find TDS’s segments hilarious, but more importantly…enlightening. They expose the real idiocy in people. We need more of this. Anyone who is poked at by TDS deserves it and earned it.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 9:59 am:

RonSandack: I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate. - Ron Sandack, 9/28/15

    - Lomez -

That IS Ron Sandack. It’s “Who” Ron Sandack is…

The Owl chose to tweet, the Owl chose to speak.

    The Owl… is NO victim.

The homeless are victims of a Ron Sandack.

Social Services are victims of a Ron Sandack.

Ounce of Prevention is a victim of a Ron Sandack.

Only “taxpayers” aren’t victims, they are “heroes”… of what I dunno.

    - Lomez -, if you don’t care, that’s on you as well.

  22. - Lomez - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:05 am:

==The focus is on Ron Sandack continually acting like a 3 year old.==

However you feel about him, he’s consistent. What I saw there is what I see every other time with him, edited to make him look even more Sandacky than usual. Nothing new.

And the Professor continued to say absolutely nothing in a completely insufferable way. Again, nothing new. Just loses my attention without the easels and fire juggling.

  23. - New Slang - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:07 am:

Bliss: “…DUDE???…” Hilarious. And Sandack does look like a Muppet. Sorry.

  24. - cdog - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:07 am:

Anybody with a Phd in Mathematics from MIT is worth a listen, and respect, even if getting punked by CC.

By nature, a gifted mathematician deals in numerical truths. There is no room for ooda-loops, hyperbole, or exponential exaggerations unless talking about calculus.

That’s Biss. He is worth paying attention to.

Can’t say much about that Sandack guy or his boss. /s

@FakeRonSandack - yeah, I’m still frustrated. The light bouncing off my head is distracting from the lunacy of my arguments #ReadyForMyCloseupMrUihlein

@FakeRonSandack - I would generally care but when Bruce and Mr. Uihline found out my price, I lost quite a few emotions #TuneOutAfterTunedUp

  26. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:10 am:

I wanted to hear Sandack say this hostage holding is worth their pain and suffering.

Rauner’s Court Jester doesn’t do well on camera; he should stick to tweets.

The video was very embarrassing for Illinois. It will do nothing good for the image of the state and will probably have some negative impact on tourism. It is also another negative for business in Illinois.

  44. - Handle Bar Mustache - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:38 am:

==the line item veto retort is unadulterated BS here==

No, it’s not. Here, in full, is the Nuding answer to “why not line item?” It tries to hide its inaccuracy in gobbeldygook:

“DONNA: Why didn’t the governor just veto the budget down to a level that was affordable? Couldn’t he have done that?

TIM: This is a claim that a lot of Democrats that supported the unbalanced budget have made. Because of the way the budget was presented, that approach was not feasible. I’ll explain. The Legislature locks in a lot of state spending in various big-spending areas by state law – state law that can only be changed by the Legislature. So, vetoing appropriations in those areas would not have resulted in savings, because the spending is controlled by law, not by appropriation. Since those laws weren’t changed to reduce costs, simply reducing the line items would have done nothing to cut costs. It would have resulted in higher backlogs of unpaid bills. The budget would not have been balanced at all.

So by leaving many spending laws intact, the Legislature effectively prevented the governor from making vetoes in those areas. What was left was a more than $4 billion out-of-balance budget that mostly protected areas such as Medicaid, state-employee pension payments, and payments to cities and counties, while leaving funding for our schools exposed to the veto pen. And be assured, the Democratic majority structured it this way by design. They knew exactly what they were doing. They were daring the new governor to veto funding for schools. It was politics.

As a result of this approach, where the Democrats protected almost every other area of the budget, the only true option the governor had with his veto pen was to slash funding for schools by billions of dollars in order to balance the budget. Because education is the governor’s top priority, that was not an approach consistent with his values or his priorities. Therefore, he signed the education-funding bill and outright vetoed the rest of the budget, asking the Legislature to send him a balanced budget. The Legislature hasn’t passed an alternative budget since.”

Wow. How embarrassing for our state. This video just made me want to cry. I’ll bet we’re kissing a ton of tourism $$$ away, especially with all the Chicago-bashing the Governor Rauner has been doing.

===as if he said or did anything that was in any way different than what he says and does everyday===

Good point. It just looks more ridiculous on basic cable.

  47. - Me too - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:39 am:

He’s consistent. He’s still frustrated and all of this has been worth it. Vetoing in full a budget 3.5 billion dollars out of balance for last year out of principle, or line iteming it to bring it in line with revenue, was fiscally responsible. Remind me agian, including the money we owe everyone not on the Comptrollers backlog, how much deficit spending was there last year. I know it was 10 billion only including the bills we are counting. Were we to reimburse social service agencies, universities and others it would be far more.

What is sickening, is that a lot of this damage is permanent. Skilled staff have taken other employment, homeless shelters and soup kitchens have closed never to reopen. It would cost billions to develop the non-profit social service infrastructure we had before. I’m not even certain money could do it. I’m sure no one will be too keen to rely on State grants in anyway in the future. On the bright side, I now agree with the governor’s initial campaign that Indiana is a far better run state than Illinois. Good job governor. You made us look worse than Indiana. For shame. The fifth largest economy in the country and the seventeenth largest economy in the world is a laughing stock.

Maybe Illinois GOP legislators named Ron S.should stay off The Daily Show. This post is reminding me of the Ron Stephens Plan B segment back in the day but I guess Blago got the worst in that one.

I don’t think I was faintin’ or doin’ it over any couch…

… but, if The Owl isn’t looking more ridiculous to you, then your opinion of what is “bottom” is a tad high?

    ===a left wing show===

Joe McCarthy has become popular in the Illinois GOP these days, what with all Rauner’s “collectivist” talk and now some of the comments here.

The “left wing” show didn’t do anything to Sandack. He did it all himself.

As a “civilian” reader of this blog, I’ve been interested in the perspectives of commenters who have real inside knowledge of the issues and personalities involved in state government. I’ll admit, though, that I’ve occasionally wondered if maybe some of the anti-”Owl” criticism wasn’t a bit overblown or personal.

However, after seeing this segment, I now think maybe y’all understated the case. Sandack came off like some sort of cartoon villain, maybe from the “Batman” franchise (”Cueball”?). Seriously, he appeared borderline deranged. And he’s a person with a lot of power and influence in Illinois government? Ugh. Lord help us. …

And the Sandick clown show continues. This guy would be hilarious if he was in on the joke. The entire system is falling apart and he wants us to be concerned about business owners over homeless youth. Just keep being you, Ronnie.

  73. - Gooner - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 11:59 am:

What’s happened to Ron Sandack is really a shame. I’ve known him for about 20 years. He was always a good lawyer and a decent guy.

For a while, he was a real model for what the GOP needed to do if they were to win statewide.

However, he’s gone off the deep end. He’s taking extreme positions and any sense of decency is gone. It is a shame.

Actually, no. The criticism isn’t because someone isn’t acting like a Democrat. The criticism is because Sandack has no self-awareness, and no ability to see that, yes, he is part of the problem and deserves part of the blame.

He doesn’t get it. And that deserves even more criticism than he got on The Daily Show.

    @@FakeRonSandack - you see Sen. Biss’ face! I really showed him a thing or 3 #ShowedHowSillyOwlsAre #ShowedCaringForPeopleIsntMyThing

  78. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 12:48 pm:

@FakeRonSandack - I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate.

    Aw, Geez. My bad.

That’s on me, everyone. I thought that was a fake tweet…

@RonSandack: I’m frustrated 2, but taking steps towards reforming IL more important than short term budget stalemate. - Ron Sandack, 9/28/15

    It wasn’t.

The joke is on everyone else?

@FakeRonSandack - yeah, I did that tweet, then I realized that sounded like I still kinda cared and have been trying to do better since. #FrustratedDecimation #AgendaFirst

  79. - hockey fan - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 1:12 pm:

Biss as Muppet Beaker is funny, but really not accurate.

He’s more like Kermit on the inside. Sandack more like Fozzy Bear.

The piece was sad and funny, it was first piece of the Daily Show I have seen since the bigoted misogynist Trevor took over that show. It’s horrible.

  80. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 1:39 pm:

Senator Biss neglected to mention that because there was no change in the law it was impossible to line item veto the budget into balance.

  81. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 2:01 pm:

    - Lucky Pierre -

Everyone forgot to mention Gov. Rauner’s $4 billion out of whack budget outline too.

    That’s fun.

@FakeRonSandack - yeah, I said business are more important than homeless youth and I sleep well think that. But I only sleep well on weekends. #RiskyBusinessChoosingBusinessOverHomeless

  82. - FYI - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 2:04 pm:

Perhaps the most arrogant part of this is that Sandack thought he could be smarter and/or funnier than a professional comic…who has editing equipment.

  83. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 2:06 pm:

@FakeRonSandack - in the unedited version I look even more arrogant and even less caring. Thanks Daily Show! #Unvarnished #RealMeUninterrupted

  84. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 2:48 pm:

@fakesenatorbiss I can go on a left wing cable show and say- Dude the Governor can line item veto the budget into balance under our state constitution. The fact that this is an obvious falsehood because the legislature never changed the underlying statutes and guys like Oswego Wily will post 25 posts about Ron Sandack and let me get away with it.

  85. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 2:54 pm:

    - Lucky Pierre -

Try to get within the 140 characters, just in the neighborhood.

You forgot to talk about Rauner’s $4 billion unbalanced outline, again.

@FakeRonSandack - I don’t take any blame for a budget, intimidating Staff on the floor, swearing at colleagues or tweeting pictures of colleagues. Props have no control of their uses #Tool

  86. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 3:20 pm:

God the Daily Show is stale. Feel like I’ve seen this bit 800 times before.

  87. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 3:22 pm:

Oswego Willy as you know the Goveror supports revenue and also Senator Cullerton’s pension bill as part of a package of reforms that would reduce that 4 billion dollar deficit significantly. If our economy grew at the same percentage as the nation over the past 15 years we would not have a budget deficit currently. The House passed a budget 7 billion dollars out of balance and no reforms to grow our economy that you seem to have no issues with.

===If our economy grew at the same percentage as the nation over the past 15 years we would not have a budget deficit currently===

    LOL

You ever meet a legislator? They’d have found a way to spend every dime.

  89. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 3:29 pm:

    ===Goveror supports revenue===

Revenue is Required, it’s NOT a give.

    Not a give.

===7 billion dollars out of balance and no reforms to grow our economy===

1.4% or $500+ million isn’t getting it done.

If you have billions more to show, show it.

@FakeRonSandack - when people ask me if I care about people, I ask how much is it going to cost. Money to business is worth more #WorthOfManLostOnMe

==The House passed a budget 7 billion dollars out of balance and no reforms to grow our economy that you seem to have no issues with.==

Enough already with you absolutists. Why is it so difficult to understand that opposing the Governor’s “reforms” does not mean you support the alternative.

You’re like a constant barrage of press releases for the Governor’s office in every comment you make.

  91. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 5:01 pm:

==The fact that this is an obvious falsehood ==

    No, it’s not.

  92. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 5:10 pm:

Demoralized you must have missed the Senate budget meeting with Director Nuding where he refuted your premise with surgical precision. The Senators advocating your position looked foolish. Perhaps you can explain

  93. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 5:20 pm:

seems like a Biss set up.

    When it mattered…

Ron Sandack chose business over the needy…

Ron Sandack chose “taxpayers” over the homeless.

Ron Sandack answered freely. Ron Sandack answered honestly.

Ron Sandack takes no ownership to pain, to frustration, but steps to reform Illinois are just more important… than people.

That’s the owl. That’s Ron Sandack. That’s the Ron Sandack we saw.

  96. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 7:03 pm:

    Interesting…

@RonSandack - I agree. It is noteworthy that the show has a political slant/agenda.

Not one person… made Ron Sandack… say anything… Ron Sandack said.

Slant, no slant, you said it, Owl.

    You said it.

  97. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 8:30 pm:

OW- these kids did a great job on this parody, but parts do pertain to our “Owl”. :)

    - Anon221 -

That was pretty fun, it made me smile.

  99. - Property of IDOC - Wednesday, Jun 29, 16 @ 10:04 pm:

The point about the line item veto is, sure he could have done it…but then he would not have achieved the crisis he was planning.

What is up with Sandack’s eyebrows?? Lol

  100. - Demoralized - Thursday, Jun 30, 16 @ 8:56 am:

    ==Perhaps you can explain==

I already have. Something being extremely complicated and difficult is not the same as being impossible. You can choose to understand that or not. I don’t care. I suspect, given your penchant for making comment after comment using Raunerite press release language, that you really have no interest in understanding anything.
