IL GOP may get a few laughs from this quasi-clever rebranding, but are they also laughing at the 30 years of futility and incompetence when it comes to challenging the Speaker’s power?
- Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Aug 18, 16 @ 9:28 am:
Looks like those buttons yesterday got a rise out of Mr. Speaker.
I oppose term limits because I think they create a system that relies too heavily on staff expertise (as if we don’t do that already)and direction to shape agendas, and reduce the opportunity for elected officials to become champions and get into understanding the nuance of the issues they work on.
So that’s the policy-based argument.
As for how effective this photo is, I under what the GOP would start looking like if they suddenly found old, rich white guys unfit for public office.
As someone not particularly thrilled with Madigan or DPI in general, this photo does not make me dislike him and mostly comes across as making fun of a dude for being old.
The irony here is that the Dem’s could use the same messages and put the faces of many “career” republicans on a poster too. I can’t believe how many people seem to forget the 26 year run of republican domination prior to the last 15 years. The republican party apparatus is by far most at fault for their failures from enabling bad, corrupted, or uninteresting candidates - throw in really lame campaigns and viola’ - Democratic domination.
So obviously, combine the two, and wrap them around your dem opponents. Brilliant. Except madigan keeps getting his members elected. Better the republicans recruit solid candidates to run against the sue scherers of the world. I just got a mailing from sue, still talking about “going through the budget line by line.” In the current situation, thats rich.

No kidding, my initial thought was why President Bush (41) was positioned next to a Mike Madigan button.
Not a flattering photo of our Speaker. But he is coated in political Teflon so no worries…
They can’t use that image widely, I think it could be seen as an attack on Madigan’s age - just the images alone feel that way. But they aren’t - this is just a social media thing for their base.
They are smart, this is a very good professional crew and they know that they need to help motivate turnout for the fall. That’s the only battle they are fighting now - try to get GOP voters to the polls because Trump is likelt to severly depress turnout among moderate Republicans.
Humor based social media playing to your base. Good stuff - but not going to persuade any leaner voters that’s for sure.
I can’t stand Madigan or his party, but it isn’t smart to use this photo. He just looks like a sad old man. Making fun of that seems mean. Find one where he doesn’t look so decrepit if you’re going to use this tactic. Better yet, show some class and just don’t.

Gotta hand it to the Rauner Crew here… This is really, really good if they can build on it.
The picture? Couldn’t photoshop a picture better for this, at the Fair.

Doing the same thing over and over, and then wondering why there is no progress.
How many years have they been doing this? What has it gotten them? Democratic super-majorities.
The Speaker should pay for those ads.

As a major distributor of “Fire Madigan” paraphernalia, this is good for my business.
The twist of “Career Politician Day”, as a stand-alone retort here… IS good.
It’s good for the Day. If they can build on it… for the day… it’s good.
Tomorrow? Not so much. Today, it’s really good.
