I’m just so done with this US Senate campaign
Wednesday, Aug 24, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller * The two US Senate candidates are speaking to the Illinois Farm Bureau today. Tammy Duckworth has already spoken and an IFB official announced there’d be a brief break. “We tried to design this so that the candidates do not have an opportunity to to be seen together,” the official told the audience - with a straight face - after about 15 minutes. Sheesh. “So,” he continued, “Representative Duckworth is gone and Sen. Kirk will be here in about five minutes.” Attendees were then asked to take their seats. * Earlier this week, there was some doubt that BlueRoomStream.com would even be allowed to video the event, let alone livestream it. The company was told they’d be able to cover the post-event Q&A’s, if any, but that was it. By late yesterday, they were given the go-head to livestream and you can watch by clicking here. Both sides deny that they tried to suppress media coverage.

At this point, I’m willing to make due with just the one Illinois Senator till 2022.

Tammy should be leading kirk by +20 points, but she is too petty, tacky and incompetent, even by il standards. I am voting for her in the more in the parliamentary sense that I want a dems in dc to have a strong hand, but I have no illusions she’ll be effective for il.
- Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:50 pm:
Who’s got more to gain by appearing anonymous and invisible? Not Tammy D.
- Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:50 pm:
Whose*
- Mama - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:51 pm:
I feel Tammy will make a better Senator than what Kirk has done for IL. At least Tammy will make sure the Vets are taken care of.
- Precinct Captain - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:51 pm:
Yikes for me today! Maybe I’ll just be as invisible as the Senate candidates.
- @MisterJayEm - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:53 pm:
Precinct Captain,
And that’s why I never acknowledge my typos. (That and I don’t notice ‘em.)

I agree that this is becoming really painful. As for taking care of vets, that’s great but the job is a lot broader than that.
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 2:55 pm:
The campaigns are simply trying to avoid turning a joint appearance into a debate. SOP. Not sure why this is noteworthy. Annoying? Maybe. But it’s hardly strange behavior.
Also, I believe neither side is trying to suppress media coverage. They are trying to avoid joint questioning from either the audience or the media. Again, standard political scheduling practice.
The Farm Bureau wants to have one meeting for its members to hear both candidates, and neither candidate wants to appear alongside the other at a joint event. This is the compromise.

“We tried to design this so that the candidates do not have an opportunity to to be seen together,” the official told the audience - with a straight face…
What exactly did he mean??? Was he expecting a fight to break out??? That one statement is insulting, embarrassing, and possibly demeaning all rolled into one.

Their ads during the Olympics made me so happy to have functioning eyelids and a mute button.
- Last Bull Moose - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:03 pm:
I would say a pox on both candidates, but they both have enough health problems.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:08 pm:
What’s worse, both candidates and Crews acting like this, or both candidates and Crews not embarrassed at acting like this.
Geez, Louise, this race is for, arguably, a seat in the most important and influential legislative chamber on earth.
This is how y’all act?
- Illinois Bob - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:19 pm:
@OW
I don’t know how much you’re tied into the political cultures in other states, but the states where I spend most of my time think of Illinois politics as a leper colony that needs to be quarantined and contained.
No hope if getting Illinois straightened out by either party. all the nation can do is limit the damage outside of Illinois caused by its politics.
- Dance Band on the Titanic - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:28 pm:
Hard to find a campaign where both candidates have worked so hard to NOT earn my vote.
- SOIL M - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:39 pm:
Well two years ago we had a choice between Quinn and Rauner, now we have a choice between Kirk and Duckworth. I would ask is this that this State can come up with? But then I look at the coices we have for President and see that it aint just us. And the major parties wonder why so many people feel abandoned by both of them.
- SOIL M - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:41 pm:
That should be– Is this the best that this State can come up with?
Apologies
- A guy - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:46 pm:
This one really is a mess. I’ve been done with it from the start.
Sadly, this is one where the parties picked ‘em for us.
- Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 3:54 pm:
I decided a while ago Dick Durbin and Al Franken are my Senators.
- fleaIFB - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 4:15 pm:
IFB panders to all sides all the time….Ag term is chicken….
- illini - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 4:46 pm:
Simpson-Bowles report was issued over 6 years ago.
Sen Kirk what have you done during that time to try to implement its proposals?????
- Independent - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 5:27 pm:
You’d think the Dems would have gotten this right after the Alexi debacle six yrs ago. Now another weak nominee is served up to the flawed Kirk. I don’t get it.
- Well then - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 7:04 pm:
I’m still not over the “ride in on the petticoat tails” comment by Duckworth
- Mrs. Grundy - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 7:18 pm:
Precinct Captain: “who’s” is the contraction for “who is” or “who has” — you were right the first time, “who’s” as in “who has got the most to gain…”
- thoughts matter - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 8:43 pm:
I’m done with all the politicians for all the races, both state and nationwide. Cannot wait for mid-November.
- quad city democrat - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 10:49 pm:
Duckworth is such a disappointment …
- Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 11:00 pm:
If “None of the Above” was a ballot option for voters, neither Duckworth or Kirk would have a prayer of receiving a plurality.
- Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 24, 16 @ 11:01 pm:
–I don’t know how much you’re tied into the political culture of other states, but the states where I spend most of my time…–
What states (plural) are those, Bob? Catatonia? Delusion? Denial?
You’re just an International Man of Mystery: Building nuclear power plants and highways, teaching at top universities and inner-city schools, running political campaigns, picking out pink panties for male Hispanic prisoners with Sheriff Joe….
