Nobel Prize for Dylan

Thursday, Oct 13, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Wow

Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday, a stunning announcement that for the first time bestowed the prestigious award on a musician for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

Reporters and others who gathered at the Swedish Academy’s headquarters in Stockholm’s Old Town reacted with a loud cheer as his name was read out.

Dylan, 75, is the most iconic poet-musician of his generation. Songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’” became anthems for the U.S. anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s. He is the first American winner of the Nobel literature prize since Toni Morrison in 1993.

    Certainly a great artist.

I hope they will have an English translation for the ceremony. /s

At least they waited until he “did something” before they gave him the award, lol.

How do you say “The Times They Are A-Changin’ ” in Swedish?

  9. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 10:19 am:

Awesome. One of my favorite stories is Dylan meeting The Beatles. It was quite an influential meeting.

If you live long enough, you could see anything happen. Wait til he finds out it comes with a million bucks. Congrats Mr. Dylan!

The Nobel committee must have heard vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme. If they had listened closely they would not have paid it any mind.

Never thought of it this was… but it works. Congrats…

I’ll probably get flamed for this but I think Bob Dylan is vastly overrated. I just don’t care for any of his work.

  14. - Huh? - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 10:40 am:

So the Nobel Prize was given to a guy with a nasal unintelligible singing style. Wow.

  15. - RNUG - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 10:46 am:

Dylan’s performing may or may not be your cup of tea, but he can turn a phrase. I’ve long thought the poets of our era are actually the songwriters.

  16. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 10:52 am:

    Dylan……..perfect!

And he’s as relevant today as he was in the sixties.

Come senators, congressmen please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled
    There’s a battle outside and it’s ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a’ changin’!

  18. - Saluki - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 11:24 am:

I hope they gave it to him for his lyrics and not his singing voice. Always sounded like a 80 year old going through a late puberty to me. Saw him in concert once. Glad I saw him, just to say I did, but the Brian Setzer Orchestra opened up and were alot better.

  19. - Soccertease - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 11:33 am:

Definitely for his lyrics such as:

Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes

You’d know what a drag it is to see you

Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street

As @skyfullofbacon tweeted, “Giving it to Dylan makes it even more surprising they never gave it to a filmmaker when the perfect Scandinavian candidate was alive.” That is, Ingmar Bergman.

  24. - illini - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 1:19 pm:

    Amazing recognition and long overdue.

Finally the poet of my generation is being recognized at this level!

    Unbelievable and timeless lyrics!

Few other singer/songwriter can ever compare!

  25. - Senator Clay Davis - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 3:22 pm:

Sometimes I think about this lyric while standing around the rail:

“Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can’t help but wonder what’s happenin’ to my companions
Are they lost or are they found
Have they counted the cost it’ll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they’re gonna have to abandon?
There’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend”

  26. - Johnny's in the Basement - Thursday, Oct 13, 16 @ 7:28 pm:

Which will be the first reporter to ask him “How does it feel”??
