Summers compares Trump to Rauner
Friday, Jan 20, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller
* Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers has floated his name for governor. Today, he lashed out at our new president by tying him to our governor…
Today, the 45th President of the United States of America was sworn in to office. I believe it is my responsibility as an elected official to respect the peaceful transition of power and do all that I can to ensure the success of the new administration. However, as Chicago City Treasurer and as a citizen, I cannot sit back and accept the behavior that has been demonstrated by President Trump and others like him, both during his campaign and leading up to today. Our city, state, and country cannot allow blatant racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination to be commonplace in our public discourse.
In Illinois, we have seen exactly what happens when our leaders prioritize divisive politics over people. Our Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, just like President Trump, wants to do away with the Affordable Care Act and leave roughly 18 million people without healthcare. Under Rauner, over one million people in Illinois have lost vital services because of the lack of a budget, and over 160,000 Illinois students have had to ask themselves if they can afford to go to college because their access to MAP grant funding has been eliminated. These partisan and political actions have placed our most underserved residents at risk, those who are working hard everyday in pursuit of the American Dream. We need leadership that focuses on a balanced budget, meaningful education funding reform and a jobs plan that works for all communities in Illinois, not just a select few. Simply stated, Illinois is no longer working for working people.
As a state and as a nation, we must unite in fighting against those who would promote hate and seek to marginalize our citizens who need us most. We must stand up to protect the important legacy of President Obama and the progress we have made as a nation over the last eight years.

Please. More of this. Trump’s ‘American carnage’ speech is exactly the same rhetoric Rauner uses about Illinois.
Tie these two clowns together.

That’s not fair. Rauner divested himself of his business before taking office. Trump still hasn’t resigned from his companies (which are huge and unbelievably successful, by the way).

Didn’t the city just ask for $1 billion for a train project? I’m not sure this helps cash the check.

There is one key difference between the two men:
Trump is in-your-face stupid, whereas you’ve really got to be paying attention to see how stupid Rauner is.
Credit where credit is due.

This is smart and a clear and concise way to explain Rauner to people in a state where Trump did horribly.
- Earnest - Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 4:10 pm:
The comparison between the two doesn’t resonate with me. Rauner has been a Governor for two years and Trump has been President for a couple of hours or so. Summers needs to sharpen up his attacks if he wants to rise above the noise.

===Rauner divested himself of his business before taking office===
He resigned, but much of his money is still tied up in that company.

===…but much of his money is still tied up in that company.===
Oh, well in that case, he’s just as bad as Trump. I guess it’s OK if you’re a Republican.

Here’s where Summers completely lacks.
===Under Rauner, over one million people in Illinois have lost vital services because of the lack of a budget, and…===
Whoa, slow down Speed Racer.
Summers is equating Trump to Rauner, using a two year budgetary standoff consisting of divided government not finding a budget while fending off an agenda that must be met first.
That’s Summers’ point…
Ok.
Trump hasn’t had a “budgetary standoff” existing because of agenda driven demands.
Summers comes off as the angry old man complaining about someone on their lawn by saying his mail comes too late like his neighbor.
This is actually embarrassing.
Did anyone read this and say to Sunmers “Yeah, this is great, let’s save it it’s so good”… then delete it forever.
Summers isn’t ready. Summers doesn’t even understand messaging, LOL!

Both need to negotiate with people they insult. That has not worked in Illinois.
- CharlieKratos - Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 4:21 pm:
Both will be campaigners 24/7.

I think it might have been someone here that said last year basically people thought they were getting a humane Romney in Bruce Rauner but what they really got was a burn it down jack— like Trump.

You know that, “Change is hard.”
- Sue - Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 4:34 pm:
Pure grandstanding and political posturing- only problem is the Mayor has his hand out for federal funding. Just brilliant - hope you remember this when your calls for help go unanswered
- JS Mill - Friday, Jan 20, 17 @ 4:35 pm:
One difference I note is that Rauner has normal sized hands.

And Trump wouldn’t be caught dead wearing plaid.

OW, Summers is talking to Illinois dem primary voters and they will be very receptive to a message that ties Rauner to Trump. The comparison doesn’t have to be razor sharp to be effective.

===The comparison doesn’t have to be razor sharp to be effective.===
So you’re saying Dem primary voters aren’t bright? Got it.
Summers isn’t ready, he can’t even lay out a simple message.
