An image is worth a thousand, um, empty seats
Tuesday, Feb 21, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * From the IFT President…
Maybe it really was a “great turnout” if not many were actually invited, but that picture surely doesn’t show it. Also, it’s not technically Rauner’s grand bargain, even though he’s taking credit for it. The package is still stuck in the Senate. And Sen. Biss voted for some of those bills.

Do yourself a solid…
Never take a picture of a crowd unless the “absolute” desired effect (full house, empty house) is seen without any question.
Staging and framing an image to continue a narrative is the goal.
This is embarrassing. Stop. Stop tweeting. Stop… whatever social media you think is helping you.
At least have everyone “move” in the first 4 rows, crop a picture, then have everyone move.
Seeing this, the failure is that… I’m seeing “this”
Ugh.

OMG. Just stop. This is so hurtful to send out an image like this.

“Poised for a quick exit.”

But forget the substance of why people might want to oppose the “Grand Bargain.”
Focus on crowd size.

Cardinal rule: you’re always better off booking a room that’s too small rather than one that’s too big.

Then don’t tweet a ridiculous picture mocking the message you want highlighted.
How about that?!
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 5:16 pm:
BB that tweet of his was all about crowd size and not substance.
- Phenomynous - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 5:18 pm:
They were LOUD enough to fill the venue.
- Blue Bayou - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 5:27 pm:
RM, but this blog isn’t.
I get that’s it’s a stupid tweet (not a rare occurrence), but I’m curious about why teachers and the IFT are against the GB. That’s why I come here.
Not for lulz. (OK, occasionally, when Sue posts.)
- Railrat - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 5:58 pm:
Love this just maybe like all union tradesman that are tired and oppose democrats and union bosses that control of their families lives ? Maybe just maybe
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 6:00 pm:
==Not for lulz===
If not for lulz, I’d go insane. So lulz it is.
- blue dog dem - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 6:25 pm:
Ok. What the heck is lulz?
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 6:30 pm:
Plural of lol
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 6:38 pm:
The crowd is as small as the one seen at the premier of the movie, “Deuce Bigelo: Threesome”.
- tobias846 - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 6:42 pm:
At this point, I’m astounded that anyone who cares about Illinois would be categorically (and indiscriminately) opposed to the Grand Bargain. I mean, I can understand people having a problem with certain aspects of it, sure, but just screaming “no no no” to the only grown-up, reality-based attempt at a budget doesn’t accomplish a thing. Do these people seriously think that prolonging the impasse is better overall?
The GB is the only game in town. It’s not as if someone has a much better plan ready to go. If this fails, we could be looking at another two years, minimum, without a budget.

Yea, the non-controversial ones. Wanna’ take a bet on whether or not he votes on the more controversial bills
in the package that labor hates?

Wow! Just a few more than IPI’s last get together…
- Cadillac - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 8:39 pm:
The rest of them all all grading homework… yeah, that’s it.
- Honeybear - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 9:35 pm:
The sad truth is that so few people give a crap anymore. We are outliers here on Capfax. It’s terribly hard to get anyone interested in something that directly effects them. I get it Mr. Montgomery. I’m happy you had a good crowd.
- JoeMaddon - Tuesday, Feb 21, 17 @ 10:30 pm:
FWIW, 50-60 people (which is about what I count in that picture) is a pretty good sized group for this type of event. But the room is way too big, so the picture looks terrible.
- notbuyingit - Wednesday, Feb 22, 17 @ 7:52 am:
Yes, that is a great turn out compared to any AFSCME gathering I’ve been to lately (in Springfield). yes, honeybear, deNILE is rampant in IL.
- Phenomynous - Wednesday, Feb 22, 17 @ 8:23 am:
As teachers, shouldn’t they know to sit at the front of the room?
