Think before you tweet

Tuesday, Mar 7, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Um, OK…

If you click here [profanity warning], you’ll see a lot of folks misconstrued what Lou tried to say, like these folks…

* And then we have Rep. Ives…

If she was hoping for lots of support from the twitterverse, she was sorely mistaken…

Lots and lots more here, but be forewarned about strong language.

    1) Get off Twitter.

    To the Post,

When you only have 140 characters to articulate a political message that requires more than one thought through one sentence, don’t tweet it.

I think Rep. Ives tweets are hysterically out of touch as a legislator. “Why?” A personal preference on word choices within language misses the mark on what the message is saying in those words, and dismissing the message out of hand is a legislator only hearing what s/he wants to hear, not what s/he are suppose to be gleaning.

I do enjoy that Rep. Ives is so unaware of herself that her simple tweets say more than longer tweets that confuse context.

Poor Jeanne, doesn’t realize her neo-Confederate talking points are only hit with the white supremacist crowd.

  3. - Allen D - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:26 pm:

one thought come to mind, that isn’t strong language, it is weak to stoop to profanity to make a point, it means you usually do to one not having a valid point to make.

  4. - Allen D - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:28 pm:

and again my grammer hits me… love auto correct and not checking my grammar before posting…. guilty am I.

“one thought come to mind, that isn’t strong language, it is weak to stoop to profanity to make a point, it means you usually do to one not having a valid point to make.”

    Huh.

I feel the same way about failing to proofread.

I envision Rep. Ives literally clutching her pearls in shock.

==it is weak to stoop to profanity to make a point, it means you usually do to one not having a valid point to make.==

First of all grow up and join the rest of us in adult world. Second, whether someone drops a 4 letter word or some other profane term in an argument is irrelevant to the substance of the argument. The simple fact of using profane language doesn’t mean an argument isn’t valid. Again, grow up.

  8. - payton - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:40 pm:

I don’t think they misconstrued anything. We know that this was a jab at Rauner, but we can’t ignore the fact that he just denied the efficacy and credibility of a constituent’s voice based on their…occupation??? *cough* race *cough* a really gross implication from an elected official.

  9. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:42 pm:

I bet Ives is really down on that nasty Johnny Cash.

In 1955, he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

In 1968, he took a shot of cocaine, shot his woman down and then got a good night’s sleep.

Heck, the country music catalog would be virtually empty if you took out all the songs about cheating, fighting and drinking too much.

==we can’t ignore the fact that he just denied the efficacy and credibility of a constituent’s voice based on their…occupation??? *cough* race *cough*==

At the risk of claiming to read Lou Lang’s mind, it seems to me that his point was Rauner could actually get something accomplished if he talked to legislators. It was certainly too nuanced a point to reasonably think you could make it on Twitter, of course. But it’s quite a big leap from that to racism.

  11. - A Jack - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:47 pm:

It seems Ives didn’t have a valid point so she had to use language as a talking point. The problem is what is offensive comes down to a point of view. The word ‘Jazz’ used to be considered very offensive.

  12. - Jocko - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 1:50 pm:

I wonder if Chance’s organization had taken Jeanne’s coloring books.

  13. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:01 pm:

Chance is hardly a foul mouthed rapper. From what I’ve heard his music is hopeful and addresses serious subjects thoughtfully much more than the stereotypical “gangsta” rapper. There are many sub-genres of rap.

  14. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:08 pm:

An aversion to swearing and the misogyny and homophobia in Chance’s lyrics equals white supremacy and neo confederate talking points?

Even liberal Middlebury College had a problem with him. That is not a hotbed for white supremacists

In the email, Boggs also referenced student concerns expressed over the perceived misogynistic and homophobic language in Chance the Rapper’s lyrics. But for students like Luke Carroll Brown ’14, Co-Chair of the Community Council, limiting the lyrics and song choice was not enough.

“I think we can all agree that violent homophobia and misogyny are clearly out of bounds and have no place on this campus,”

  15. - Meh - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:08 pm:

I think I get, Lang’s tweets. I’m sure many felt the same way.
The governor has/is pretty inaccesible to advocates actually working on education reform. However, Lang FAILED to recognize the power & opportunity Chance had.

Representative Ives should be careful. She might slip next time and cross the kine. Then again POTUS has shown us you can tweet all you want with no consequences.

  16. - payton - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:08 pm:

“…it seems to me that his point was Rauner could actually get something accomplished if he talked to legislators…it’s quite a big leap from that to racism.”

could he not have made this point without comparing two different musical artists, both with vastly different catalogs, and without implying that the fact that they would want to speak with the governor is ludicrous? If chance were a business investor of a different race from Highland Park, would the thought of him meeting with the governor be so bewildering? Who would he be compared to then? Certainly not cheef keef.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

    - Lucky Pierre -,

Gov. Rauner went out of his way to congratulate Chance on winning Granmys for his music.

You should take up your questions with Rauner.

How dare Bruce Rauner advocate and congratulate Chance with his music the way it is!

    LOL

  18. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:29 pm:

Probably see an ad soon saying the Governor’s admiration of Chance is part of the Republican war on women.

  19. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:31 pm:

LP, you’re doing a lot of research on Chance.

Perhaps you should work on your arithmetic, given your whacky ciphering from this morning.

  20. - A guy - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:31 pm:

If swearing is forbidden, I may just have to get off this damn board!

  21. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 2:40 pm:

Yes I made a mistake Anonymous. 10 million private dollars would have to be raised for Chance to contribute 1 million dollars so teachers will not have to pick up the entire employee cost of their pension like other state workers.

Maybe they can pass the hat among all the people who have no pensions or retiree health care to come up with the funds to help the Kids.

  22. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 3:51 pm:

== to come up with the funds to help the Kids.==

The Governor could help do that by simply doing his job.

Yeah, I know, I know. He’s just a victim in all of this.

  23. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 3:57 pm:

    ==If swearing is forbidden==

People at my office would have nothing to say. lol

  24. - @MisterJayEm - Tuesday, Mar 7, 17 @ 4:14 pm:

“Probably see an ad soon saying the Governor’s admiration of Chance is part of the Republican war on women.”

It’s hard to make a coherent argument when the governor gives you so little to work with, isn’t it?
