Unclear on the concept

Monday, Apr 3, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The concept being “empathy”

Cathy McClanahan, executive director of the Women’s Center, which offers programs to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and serves about 1,200 people annually, said the center has not received a payment from the state since December.

“We have about three months’ worth of payroll left in order to keep the building open and keep it going,” she said.

[State Sen. Paul] Schimpf responded by saying there are many examples of suffering the budget has caused. He and [state Sen. Dale] Fowler thanked McClanahan for bringing the matter to their attention and said they would seek a resolution to the problem.

“There are companies right now that are wanting to come to the state of Illinois,” Fowler said. “… but they’re not coming to the state of Illinois because we don’t have these several reforms, especially in our workers’ compensation.”

Sen. Schimpf better call the governors office and get permission to speak lest he get primaried.

    Dear Ms. Cathy McClanahan,

This is Sen. Dale Fowler, telling you…

“Businesses mean more than you. Once we get businesses, and Rauner’s reforms, I’ll care about you.”

    Make NO mistake

Sen. Fowler thinks less about helping people, but cares greatly about businesses… that aren’t even here yet.

Sen. Fowler is empathetic towards Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, not those hurt in Illinois being held hostage.

Speaks volumes, Sen. Fowler… Thanks for making sure it’s not confusing that you prefer Rauner’s impassable agenda… to those being held hostage and hurt, because unknown businesses need your empathy first.

    Wow.

Nice way to talk right past what she’s saying. And it makes me wonder if it is because it’s a woman talking about issues that affect women more often than men.

  4. - wordslinger - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 12:58 pm:

Was Fowler on that extended, super-secret criss-crossing of the nation with Rauner lining up those dozens of companies?

    Pay your bills, Sen, Deadbeat.

  5. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:00 pm:

Apparently the belief we must be competitive before we can be compassionate isn’t limited to the Gov. I mean, these poor companies are being made to wait! Where’s the empathy for THEIR suffering? /s

  6. - Precinct Captain - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:07 pm:

Did Fowler clear that with the governor? According to the governor businesses only locate in states with term limits, making worker’s comp a secondary issue.

  7. - illinoised - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:15 pm:

Fowler evidently wasn’t paying attention in kindergarten.

  8. - @misterjayem - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:20 pm:

    Abominable.

My dad used to beat the hell out of my mother, repeatedly, as little kindergartener me watched helplessly from the staircase.

My blood boils when I read this craven nonsense.

  10. - SMH - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:29 pm:

But I thought University employees were getting laid off because prospective businesses wanted term limits. Now it’s workers comp reform? Oh, the humanity!

  11. - illini - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:29 pm:

It appears that Gov Rauner and the ILLGOP have bought the exact kind of dowwstate members of the GA they wanted.

Expect to see them showing even more compassion for their constituents, local agencies and SIU.

  12. - Norseman - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:30 pm:

I hear from companies all the time that term limits is the hold up for coming into the state. NOT!!!

  13. - Impasse Casualty - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:31 pm:

Fowler should concern himself with Illinoisans who are already in the state and suffering rather than those who could theoretically come to Illinois if certain reforms were passed.

  14. - Oh the humanity - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:35 pm:

…and here I thought University employees were getting laid off because prospective businesses wanted term limits.

  15. - The Captain - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:38 pm:

The only difference between what Fowler said and the pretending-to-care that more seasoned Republicans typically offer up is the pretending part. Seasoning will fix that though I’m sure.

  16. - Earnest - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:51 pm:

It’s really impressive how well Rauner holds discipline in his legislators, even in them parroting his designated talking points.

    >“There are companies right now that are wanting to come to the state of Illinois,” Fowler said

There are out of state companies wanting to contract for social services once existing, local agencies are extinct. It’s happening when Rauner has an opportunity.

  17. - Gruntled University Employee - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 1:53 pm:

===“There are companies right now that are wanting to come to the state of Illinois,” Fowler said.“===

    Oh really Senator, name one.

  18. - zatoichi - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 2:36 pm:

Apparently Sen Fowler has not had a family member need or used the services offered by the Women’s Center. Worker Comp changes do not seem to be stopping Amazon from building new monster distribution centers or any of the companies who are filling those million square foot warehouses in Bolingbrook along 55. So, Senator, name those special companies waiting to come.

  19. - Get it Solved - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 2:56 pm:

After the announcement last week of a 30 million dollar cut at SIU Carbondale and now a Women’s Center that serves 1,200 domestic violence victims annually, all Fowler and Schimpf can offer up is the same broken record turnaround agenda talking points. So much for fighting for your district.

  20. - VanillaMan - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 3:14 pm:

Schrimpf said what Rauner supporters say when hearing a hard luck story - BOO HOO!

He’s not unclear on a concept - they don’t care about the human costs of people they see as living off Illinois taxpayers.

You cannot beat Rauner using Democratic BOO HOO stories. His voters don’t care.

Rauner supporters believe that times are tough - too tough to think that a state program is going to do anything but raise their taxes.

Democrats are going to have to think like Republicans in order to claw back Rauner supporters next year.

If i didn’t know better I’d assume some of the gents in the GOP just didn’t have mothers, sisters or daughters.

    Linus,

Thank you for putting a human face on the awful suffering. It’s hard to imagine what you went through.

Too often people read about the people who have been hurt and they can’t relate because they don’t know anyone in that position. It’s all so damned tragic.

  23. - RankinFile - Monday, Apr 3, 17 @ 4:12 pm:

Organizations and individuals should check the Illinois State Treasurer’s unclaimed money/property lists to see what they might have in reimbursements, uncashed checks, etc. Don’t let Bruce have your money!
