* Tribune’s Inc. column…
“Hi, I’m Bobby Jindal and I’m running for governor.”
With those words, Ald. Ameya Pawar introduced himself Tuesday night to comedy fans and potential voters at Chicago’s iO Theatre.
“I didn’t know how that would go,” he admitted moments later of his ethnic joke, as the laughter from the audience of around 100 died down. […]
“I’ll be the first normal Indian governor,” he joked, in a barb at both Jindal and Nikki Haley, two Indian-Americans who previously served as governors of South Carolina. […]
“I don’t think wealth is bad but I don’t think wealth is synonymous with success, either,” he said, calling for changes to the tax code to support the middle class and describing it as “kind of annoying to listen to all these crusty old white men making all the decisions.”
* More Inc.…
Yes, billionaire would-be Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker’s wife really is called M.K. — and yes, they really do call each other by their initials.
“Friends joked that we should call our kids ‘A,’ ‘B’ and ‘C,’” J.B. told Chicago Inc. on Monday. […]
Rauner recently appeared in a campaign ad in a workshop holding the kludger’s tool of choice — a roll of duct tape — which he used as a metaphor for the fixes Illinois politicians have used over the years.
But Pritzker said he too is “reasonably handy, though my wife is probably handier than me.”
“I’ve fixed the toilet,” he said. “And I’ve been crawling in claustrophobic places… you have to deal with that when you become a homeowner.”

“Jindal and Nikki Haley, two Indian-Americans who previously served as governors of South Carolina”
Solid editing, Trip. Jindal was the Governor of Louisiana.
You expect better from what’s supposed to be our state’s top paper

Jokes that are lame “off the cuff”, self serving and deprecating are best… when pithy… and are spontaneous to real moments.
Otherwise, see; Rauner, Bruve.
- Dude - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 1:34 pm:
“I’ll be the first normal Indian governor,”
What is that supposed to mean?
- Anne - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 1:41 pm:
A friendly heads up: Jindal was governor of Louisiana, not South Carolina.
- Observant27 - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 1:49 pm:
So the Left can joke (as cover to) utterly dismiss/delegitimize conservatives based purely off of race and ethnicity? Wake up people. These well-connected and wealthy “progs” will tell you anything to grab more of your power and your money. Disgusting.

@Dude
A joke about the far right, I think.

As a white man, I am
Offended by his racist comments.

Ald. Ameya Pawar introduced himself
It will be funny if he ends up 3rd in the primary
the first normal Indian governor
Democratic. Because all Indians should vote D….
- Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 2:18 pm:
Anne, Haley was SC.
- Responsa - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 2:27 pm:
Oh brother. It’s going to be a looong year. The politics of identity—focus on ethnicity and class–has jumped the shark. Please, candidates, talk about something else. Talk about Illinois, not yourselves, and toilets, and other states’ Indian governors.
- JohnnyPyleDriver - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 2:33 pm:
eesh, apparently i’m the only one that thought Pawar’s joke was pretty funny.
Y’all need to lighten up, good grief

It wasn’t funny, but everyone clutching pearls right now needs to know they ain’t fooling anyone.

Agree to disagree I guess. I’m a big aziz ansari fan, maybe that explains why it’s so funny to me.
- Liberal Elite - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 2:50 pm:
I was in the room, the Jindal joke killed.

It was not funny and it was offensive
I have done comedy and I know comedy. He was not funny but was very offensive with his racist comments about white men.

Laugh all you want but the billionaire candidate is the only one so far has been the only one who has demonstrated an endearing and relatable personality. Pawar comes closest, Kennedy needs to fine-tune his game, and Biss….well Biss is Biss.

Who do you people hang out with? Maybe us downstaters just don’t understand what relatable means
- Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:07 pm:
So, to paraphrase Hall and Oates, “Biss is not on your List”.

White people making fun of minorities probably still off limits. Ethnic minorities making fun of themselves probably still ok. You guys seem to really struggle with the contours of this

Oh hush you anti-dentites!!
- Not It - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 3:49 pm:
What does it say about our State when only billionaires have the ability to seriously run for Governor?
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:15 pm:
@Not It:
What it says is that all campaigns start out with four resources: Time, People, and Money.
Everyone who isn’t famous starts with about the same amount of time. People and Money vary widely. But “people” and “money” vary widely.
That said, given the anti-incumbent mood, most individuals who already have a large network of people have an uphill climb.
So, yes, it comes down to money and the fourth thing.
- Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:21 pm:
YDD,
Four resources? What’s the fourth one?
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:38 pm:
Claustrophobia is a perspective of relativity. Depends on the size of the person speaking
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 5:42 pm:
“Four resources? What’s the fourth one?”
Our chief weapon is surprise! Surprise and fear… fear and surprise! Our two weapons are fear and surprise… and ruthless efficiency. Our *three* weapons are fear, and surprise, and ruthless efficiency… and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. Our *four*… no… *Amongst* our weapons…. Amongst our weaponry… are such elements as fear, surprise… I’ll come in again. [Exits]

@JohnnyPD
Grew up in a small, factory town so not sure why you are assuming I am some sort of elite with no context.
Go back and watch all the announcement videos and tell me who you find more personable than Pritzker.
Also, if you want to play this game: Rauner (a 1%er) did pretty well downstate just by hopping on a motorcycle and throwing on a Carharrt… So maybe downstaters don’t know what relatable means?
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Apr 18, 17 @ 8:03 pm:
@Chicago Cynic -
Special Sauce.
