*** UPDATED x1 - Pritzker campaign responds *** Question of the day

* The ILGOP reacts to JB Pritzker’s new TV ad buy

Hotel Scion Pritzker Using Inherited Wealth on Inherited Agenda
Pritzker’s Advertising Follows Gov. Rauner’s Action

Today, J.B. Pritzker launched an ad campaign that aims to mirror Bruce Rauner’s actions as Governor.

He’s using his inherited wealth to push for an inherited agenda.

Pritzker’s ad claims he helped 55,000 kids get school breakfasts and touts his support for early childhood education.

What J.B. won’t tell you is that Gov. Rauner signed a bill providing 175,000 children with school breakfasts last year.

As Governor, Bruce Rauner increased education funding by $700 million since taking office, including a $100 million increase for early childhood education.

If J.B. Pritzker wants to take real, impactful steps to fix our state, he should use his fortune to encourage Mike Madigan to come to the table and pass reforms.

* The Question: How would you rate the phrase “using inherited wealth on an inherited agenda”? Don’t forget to explain your answer.

*** UPDATE ***  From Pritzker campaign manager Anne Caprara responding to the above release…

“Yesterday it was reported that early childhood education programs were at risk of getting cut because of Bruce Rauner’s failed leadership.

“This is laughable. The only person Rauner’s convinced that he’s making a difference when it comes to these issues is unfortunately himself.”

I would rate it very poorly, I’m not sure what it means. I get trying to tie him to an inheritance, aka, silver spoon in his mouth, but I”m not sure what this inherited agenda they are talking about, it’s too muddy and too much explanation (if there is one).

  2. - Anonymous - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:17 pm:

The Roosevelts and Kennedy had inherited wealth. But, they looked out for average folks and worked to raise the unfortunate to better living conditions.

    Q: What is a scion?

    A: Toyota makes them

  5. - Texas Red - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

Not a bad phrase. And as long as JB does not inherit any of the MJM traits we will be in good shape come November 6th 2018 - no matter who wins.

  6. - Rabid - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:24 pm:

Lost focus, “using inherited wealth on an inherited agenda” the only one with an agenda is the turnaround agenda

  7. - IllinoisBoi - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:26 pm:

Rauner: using inherited wealth on a disinherited agenda.

  8. - Rocky Rosi - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:26 pm:

It’s ok but for the avg Joe or Mary the phrase makes a person think too much. Go back to the drawing board guys.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:27 pm:

    ===What is a scion?===

It’s a car driven by a great deal more millennials, but I digress…

    To the Post,

    That ILGOP…

Pritzker has every intention to push for truthfulness.

The only way the ILGOP can make this work is to admit Rauner IS a phony.

If the ILGOP is calling Rauner a phony, finally, then I vote it will work to embarrass both Rauner for his phoniness and Pritzker for showing honesty from message to governing.

If this is the ILGOP just pretending they have a phrase that pays, and they don’t admit Rauner is a flat out phony, it doesn’t work at any level of linguistics.

    ==What is a scion?==

Scion is a SAT vocabulary word - not an ACT one. It is no wonder you didn’t know is means progeny

  11. - crazybleedingheart - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:30 pm:

Bruce doesn’t have “inherited wealth” because he comes from “humble beginnings”

    https://capitolfax.com/2014/09/10/a-different-sort-of-out-of-touch/

His first campaign claims age exactly as well as Trump tweets, and for the same reason.

  12. - Swift - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:35 pm:

Is the “inherited agenda” the Rauner agenda? Is the ILGOP telling me I shouldn’t vote for JB because he has the same agenda as Rauner? Doesn’t that also mean I shouldn’t vote for Rauner?

I also seem to recall a prominent Republican who inherited wealth and is currently in the White House.

  13. - Norseman - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:39 pm:

Raunerites trying to delegitimize JB’s wealth by saying it was inherited versus Rauner’s earned money. My quick thought is to point out that Rauner made money by draining assets out of businesses. In fact, Rauner couldn’t tell us of any JOBS he created.

  14. - anon2 - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:40 pm:

The GOP wants to totally repeal the so-called “death tax,” aka the estate tax. This tax only applies to multi-millionaires. Repealing it would guarantee there will be even more “inherited wealth.” In short, the GOP is all in favor of inherited wealth, except when it’s inherited by a Democrat.

  15. - akron45 - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:45 pm:

The Flesch-Kincaid Reading level on the first sentence is 14.2. That should work well with most voters.

  16. - Responsa - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:55 pm:

Anne needs to redo her press release to clarify if it is the “report” that “is laughable” or Rauner’s claim that “is laughable” Haste makes waste.

  17. - JS Mill - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 3:57 pm:

=Hotel Scion Pritzker Using Inherited Wealth on Inherited Agenda=

    Let me double check that…

Did Brucie go to Dartmouth on a scholarship? MAP grant?

    How about Harvard?

Yeah, I hope he continues with the “Rich Guy” stuff. Without his families wealth he wouldn’t be where he is today.

  18. - winners and losers - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:01 pm:

The Pritzker Family Foundation is expected to receive over a 100 percent return on a Pay for Success (Social Impact Bond) loan to the Chicago Public Schools for Early Childhood.

    J.B. DONATING to early childhood?

  19. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:03 pm:

Rauner inherited privilege, which put him on second or third base as a starting point in life. Rauner has also profited immensely from millions of unionized public employees’ pensions over the decades.

    “push for an inherited agenda”

That is nonsense and poor messaging. What’s an inherited agenda? Pritzker supports taxing people like himself more. Rauner supports shoving the sacrifice onto the backs of millions of workers and wrecking the state in the process.

  20. - Arsenal - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:12 pm:

Not great. Too much to it in theory, and in practice, it drags Rauner into a debate over his term in office, which is the last thing he wants.

  21. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:15 pm:

“using inherited wealth on an inherited agenda”

I guess Pritzker should have earned his money the old fashioned way: by turning nursing homes into slaughter houses.

    – MrJM

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:15 pm:

To Pritzker campaign manager Anne Caprara,

Nicely measured, and still holds Rauner up for inspection of truth.

    Pithy and pointed.

    That’s really well done.

  23. - The Dude Abides - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:15 pm:

Rauner increased education funding by $700 million? How do they figure that?

  24. - Commander Norton - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:16 pm:

I give it an F. I think the average guy trying to scrape out a living in the lower or middle class is not going to be impressed with hair-splitting over where each candidate got his riches. And I agree with several other commenters that it’s not at all clear what “inherited agenda” means.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:19 pm:

    I guess I’m still confused…

Inherited Agenda… The ILGOP thinks the agenda is a failure so Pritzker is glomming on a failed agenda…

… or an inherited agenda means the agenda of campaigning and fooling people, and actually not deliver on anything.

If the ILGOP can answer that, boy, that would be so helpful….

  26. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:24 pm:

“Pritzker Using Inherited Wealth on Inherited Agenda”

I read that to mean he’d be inheriting Speaker Madigan’s agenda i.e. status quo because of the last sentence in the ad.

  27. - Responsa - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:24 pm:

I thought JB was having a pretty good day with his “Big” ad. I don’t think either ILGOP’s response to it here or the Pritzker campaign’s response to that response which Rich posted below it are on target or effective. Campaigns don’t always need to have the last word about everything every single time. Wish more of them understood that.

  28. - IllinoisBoi - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:31 pm:

Rauner’s dad was a lawyer and senior vice president for Motorola. Bruce received a degree in Economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard. Yup, he was born in a log cabin he built with his own hands.

  29. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 4:33 pm:

Very poor and leaves the door open to, “vulture wealth for a vulture agenda.”

–How would you rate the phrase “using inherited wealth on an inherited agenda”? Don’t forget to explain your answer.–

I give it an “F” because I don’t know what it means. Whose agenda did he inherit?

If you’re going to engage in poor writing, the message should at least be clear.

How’s about “hotel scion?” Did the Rauner crew hire some washout from “Dallas” or “Dynasty” or something?

For crying out loud, don’t forget the “JB” — that’s the perfect name for a nighttime soap “hotel scion.”

  35. - Wensicia - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 5:23 pm:

Not that good, but worse: using parasitic wealth on a dystopian agenda.

“Bruce Rauner is about as self-made a man as Bruce Wayne. What a Joker.”

  41. - wordslinger - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 6:04 pm:

I find it revealing that the Rauner crew did not choose to attempt to one-up Pritzker on creating jobs in the private sector.

Candidate Rauner got all deer-in-the-headlights on his private sector record on that. Or hiring a person of color, for that matter.

“Creating jobs” wasn’t exactly the objective of the Rauner vampire business model.

  42. - Gooner - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 6:54 pm:

In the context of IL GOP stuff, it is not bad.

The inherited wealth line is OK. It is more about defense than offense though. Rauner is going to be criticized as an out of touch rich guy, and the line does serve to counter that argument.

The only real problem I had was the criticism of school breakfasts.

First, it points out that J.B. did close to as much on his own as IL did as a state. That either makes J.B. look good or IL look bad.

The second problem with the line for Rauner is that to the extent that it shows Rauner did more, it points out that state spending can be an effective force for good.

Does Rauner really want to remind people that government spending benefits people?

  43. - walker - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 10:54 pm:

Too complicated. Not a differentiator. Fail.

  44. - peon - Tuesday, May 2, 17 @ 11:15 pm:

Draws attention to bad news for the Governor. The closing Mdigan swipe is sad.

  45. - Rabid - Wednesday, May 3, 17 @ 12:48 am:

“this is laughable” what a yaffe riot “use his fortune to encourage” like someone can buy compliance

  46. - Gruntled University Employee - Wednesday, May 3, 17 @ 7:21 am:

Pritzker inherited something good and arguably made it better, Rauner inherited something bad and made it infinitely worse.

  47. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, May 3, 17 @ 8:53 am:

As a guy who loves rhymes, catch phrases and song parodies, I give that phrase a C-.

    Here’s why…

No one understands what an inherited agenda is - even those who should. The coupling of the words inherited and agenda is forced, in order to give the more commonly used term, inherited wealth more power and balance.

The word inherited isn’t a negative word. So using it with the word agenda isn’t instantly understood as negative.

Then, the words inherited wealth isn’t really negative either.

I hope no one got paid for coming up with this phrase. It is amateurish, clumsy, not memorable in a positive way, and a poor attempt at being clever.

I can do a whole lot better - but won’t post any examples here. Considering the literary and political poverty exposed by this phrase’s author - he, or she would just plagerize it.
