Call for bipartisan cooperation met with accusations
Thursday, May 25, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * From the twitters…
* The dustup started this afternoon when Rep. Steve Andersson (R-Geneva) rose to call for compromise. Andersson reminded the chamber about the 33 House members who signed a letter encouraging the Senate to wrap up the grand bargain. And he said it was now time to work on what the Senate had sent the House. Some of it was bipartisan, he said, some partisan. But the Senate, he said, was very close to a deal. “Let’s pick up where they left off.” Andersson said the chamber’s appropriations committee leaders were meeting, which he called a “good sign.” Rep. Andersson also addressed yesterday’s blowup on the floor about who should be invited to negotiate with the governor’s chief of staff. “It’s not the time to debate who last invited whom to the table, Andersson said. “Just come to the table.” “And my call, most importantly, is to compromise,” he said. “Let’s push our leaders as hard as we can.” * Rep. Lou Lang then rose to speak. Andersson is the GOP’s floor leader, so he may have struck a raw nerve with Lang. “It’s one thing to say you want to do a budget, it’s another thing to do one,” Rep. Lang said. Lang went on to say that today Gov. Rauner “invited 13 House Democrats to a meeting to discuss all these issues, completely ignoring the letter that Leader Currie, Leader Hoffman, Leader Turner and I sent to him offering to sit down and get these things accomplished, completely side-stepping the negotiating team that’s been created here in the House on our side of the aisle to meet with the governor. “Instead the governor has chosen, very carefully it appears, 13 Democratic political targets to meet with. I think that says a lot about his resolve and it says a lot about his desire to work with this General Assembly as a co-equal branch of government.” Lang then encouraged Republicans to “pull away” from the governor and work things out. “That’s when the crisis will end.” * However, I’m told that the 13 Democrats were simply invited by the governor’s legislative shop to a briefing about where the Senate situation stands. And the beat goes on…

Ken Dunkin was still on that list of 13, wasn’t he?
- Anon221 - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 2:58 pm:
My question: Did/Will they go? The 13 should demure to the Dem team already in place.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:01 pm:
You definitely go.
If it’s extortion, they’ll know.
If it’s an update, they’ll know.
If it’s a threat, they’ll know.
If it’s a chance to find 60, honestly, they’ll know…
… and the beat goes on.

–Andersson is the governor’s floor leader, –
Maybe they could just Skype a meeting.
- Lance Mannion - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:03 pm:
Andersson is Durkin’s floor leader, just as Lang is one of Madigan’s.

Typo on my part, but, really, is there any difference? lol

===However, I’m told that the 13 Democrats were simply invited by the governor’s legislative shop to a briefing about where the Senate situation stands.===
And also to hear the latest robo-call that will be overwhelming telephones in their districts.
- wordslinger - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:11 pm:
–Andersson is Durkin’s floor leader,…—
Geez, no need to embarrass them all like that. They and everyone know who the boss is.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:14 pm:
===Andersson is Durkin’s floor leader===
And Durkin is Goldberg’s floor leader.
- Anon221 - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:14 pm:
If they go, may want to make sure a hostage team is standing by;) Or a locksmith in case the doors to the Governor’s office suddenly get stuck and the members are needed on the floor to vote!
- DuPage Moderate - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:14 pm:
We’ve elected a bunch of children.

You assume they can agree as to who initiates the call.

===We’ve elected a bunch of children.===
My children behave better than this. But then again, the person in-charge of them has a clear, concise set of expectations and doesn’t move the goal post every other minute….
- Lance Mannion - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:46 pm:
And you’re Madigan’s troll, 47th Ward/Wordgauger, et al.
You can’t tell the players without a scorecard.
- VanillaMan - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:47 pm:
GO!
LISTEN!
LAUGH YOUR @$$ OFF!
SAY NOTHING
JUST LAUGH!

Aw - Lance Mannion -…
Snark is good for the soul…
- 47th Ward - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 3:55 pm:
===you’re Madigan’s troll, 47th Ward===
Lol. I’m a partisan Democrat, but I speak for myself here and call ‘em like I see ‘em. I’m pretty sure Rich will back me up on this, for the most part.
Also, to believe you, you’d have to believe MJM controls a sophisticated social media messaging platform. Lol. Nobody on Team Madigan knows who I am and I prefer to keep it that way.
Good day sir.

You ever dissected a carrier pigeon? Really examined the complexity of two-tin-cans-connected-by-string?
- 47th Ward - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 4:03 pm:
Sometimes I have a hard time with the smoke signals, Word, especially on days with lots of puffy clouds in the sky above the Capitol.
- Skeptic - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 4:08 pm:
“You ever dissected a carrier pigeon?” African or European?
- Norseman - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 4:27 pm:
=== … the 13 Democrats were simply invited by the governor’s legislative shop to a briefing … ===
So Rauner’s staff can only brief 13 Dem reps at a time. LOL
- Louis G. Atsaves - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 4:29 pm:
“Andersson then encouraged Democrats to “pull away” from the Speaker of the House and work things out. “That’s when the crisis will end.”
Fixed it. Then realized that fixing it made absolutely no difference.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 4:33 pm:
Maybe Goldberg got a Baker’s Dozen donuts and didn’t want any legislator to feel left out.
If you think of it that way, it pretty doggone thoughtful.
Thank you, Governor’s Staff!

Words keep pounding rhythm to the brain,
And the beat goes on…
Thanks for the brain worm.
That brought back some memories.
- Dome Gnome - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 5:43 pm:
Does anybody have a list of the 13 Dems?
- cdog - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 6:10 pm:
Lang said, “…completely ignoring the letter that Leader Currie, Leader Hoffman, Leader Turner and I sent to him offering to sit down and get these things accomplished, completely side-stepping the negotiating team that’s been created here in the House on our side of the aisle to meet with the governor.”
Goodness. Madigan’s team is complaining about being ignored? Accusing folks of side-stepping 11th hour negotiations?
That sounds more like a Madigan pattern. All strategy to preserve the nationally known disaster. The Blue State Mecca. Last year’s brilliant Hail Mary from that crew was a $7b short budget. Will we have to endure 50 years of this? Gosh, I hope not.
You know what they say about karma. Reapin’ and sowin’. Going around and coming around. Marginalize people for years, expect to be marginalized.
Let’s hope that more reps listen politely, then ignore their overlords and get something reasonable done.
- Rabid - Thursday, May 25, 17 @ 11:33 pm:
Its a trap, anything they have to say they can say it publicly, looking for their next ken dunkin they can throw away when their done with you
- Ahoy! - Friday, May 26, 17 @ 8:35 am:
Eh, Democrats (Lang especially) can’t complain about playing politics, they do it all the time and quite frankly their usually better at it. This was plain hypocrisy by Lang, but that’s all part of the game. So is asking the Republicans to step away from the Governor, as the House Democrats could always step away from Madigan.
In fact, maybe both sides should overthrow their leaders since they are frankly… not leaders.
