*** LIVE COVERAGE *** Gov. Rauner’s “unity” address
Tuesday, Jun 20, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * The governor will speak live tonight from the Old State Capitol starting at around 6:03 pm. The address is scheduled to last three or four minutes (apparently it’s designed to fit into local TV news broadcasts). I’ll post a ScribbleLive thingy before then and we’ll also use that for reactions. Background on the speech is here. The governor’s campaign Twitter account tweeted about the speech this afternoon and he posted a notice on his campaign’s Facebook page. The tweet and Facebook post directed folks to a page on Rauner’s campaign site where people can sign up for an e-mail “recap” of the address after it’s over So, he appears to be using his address tonight to beef up his campaign e-mailing list, which is often used for fundraising. There’s also a “donate” button on that campaign page. That’s the same campaign, by the way, which is currently running ads sharply critical of Speaker Madigan and his “puppets” for blocking a budget when he, himself repeatedly blocked a Senate budget. Anyway, check back around 6 o’clock. You can watch the speech on the governor’s Facebook page (click here) or his campaign site (click here). Also, check your local TV stations because some will be carrying it live via a special satellite feed. * And away we go…

Could he come out and say and do something useful???????
Not holding my breath!
- Henry Francis - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:07 pm:
This is just on Facebook, right? Are tv stations going to broadcast it?
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:08 pm:
===Are tv stations going to broadcast it?===
I’ve seen some tweets about it from stations, so yeah.
- Henry Francis - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:20 pm:
Thanks Rich. I didn’t know Proft’s media empire had expanded into television.
- Jibba - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:22 pm:
What a joke! A three minute address is a campaign commercial, not any serious proposal.
- Miss Marie - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:24 pm:
I wonder if there will be any protesters there. . . . . I’m asking for a friend . . .

Some advice for the Dem leadership in IL, from a centrist Dem who voted 2x for President Obama, but supported DJT last cycle.
The working and middle-class are OverTaxed in Illinois. You want to win the governorship?
Then campaign on freezing the tax take from the middle-class. No (i) hikes in the property tax rates, (ii) sales tax rate, (iii) excise tax rate, parking/car taxes.
You want more revenue? Campaign on a graduated income tax that will target HHs earning more than 200K a year.
Otherwise, we will lose. And we will lose big if we nominate Pritzker to be our standard-bearer
- DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:27 pm:
Three or 4 WHOLE minutes?
What is the over under on the word Madigan, term limits or property tax freeze?
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:27 pm:
===Three or 4 WHOLE minutes?===
It’s obviously designed to fit into local newscasts.

“The working and middle-class are OverTaxed in Illinois”… how can that be when Madigan the all powerful 30 plus year leader of the House, says he is fighting for the hard working families of Illinois ?
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:50 pm:
===It’s obviously designed to fit into local newscasts===
It’s genius to maximize the live aspect during the 6 pm newscasts.
Gotta give props for maximum exposure.
- Conn Smythe - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:57 pm:
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen local news broadcasts carry a love prime time speech like this.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 4:59 pm:
How many working people are home by 6? Is he courting the unemployed?
- Annonin' - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:01 pm:
Perhaps the governor will answer the followin’
1. How much of the $275 million did Chase give your “blind trust” , Griffin, Uhlein
2. Any luck on findin’ the letter from the lottery sayin’ you are dumped?
3. Hard count from Nick’s hat passin for the Pence criminal lawyer
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:01 pm:
Not going to happen, but I would love it if the tv outlets would just do a rebroadcast at 9 or 10, but not a live. It’s a free campaign commercial, nothing else. If the Rockford Register Times could do it in the past, surely at least a tv outlet could. And don’t send the attack dogs out after me. This is just a wishful wish.
- cdog - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:02 pm:
It would be very entertaining if there were protestors and he cancelled.
The courageous one. Ha!
- Archiesmom - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:07 pm:
I wish this crew were half as good governing as they are is campaignin’. If they spent half the time trying to figure out answers to our problems instead of figuring out the best way to hit the 6 o’clock news, we’d be in decent shape right now.
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:10 pm:
I can’t remember… is there a tunnel from the State Capitol building to the Old State Capitol building? Because if there isn’t, and there are protestors, I agree with cdog. Rauner may bail.
- Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:15 pm:
If they air his non campaign speech, do they have to give equal time to JB
- filmmaker prof - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:19 pm:
(In the words of Richard Nixon), Let me make something perfectly clear: Madigan is bad, but Rauner is worse.
- Cindy Lou - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:29 pm:
I think a big ‘no’ to protesters. Even if some are out front and surroundings…I’m sure whatever guest (if any) for the speech allowed inside will be hand picked.
The man didn’t go to this much trouble to plaster his face across the screen to let any nonsense get in his way.
3 to 4 minutes? My guess is the word ‘Madigan’ at the least 10 times and ‘hard workin’families’ another half a dozen. The word ‘compromise’ 8 times. Without a doubt we’ll hear ‘good faith’ and ‘negotiations’ both too.
- baloneymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:50 pm:
it’s genius…
maybe, if networks actually broadcast entire speech, and if people actually watch it, otherwise just normal sound bites that will replay at 10pm and most people won’t pay attention to.
- Thoughts Matter - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:50 pm:
If it’s meant to be incorporated into a campaign commercial, it’s not going to be a serious unity speech. Any insults toward his opposition defeats that whole unity thing.
- JS Mill - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:52 pm:
BVR: “Unity for me, dishonest campaign ads for you”
- baloneymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:54 pm:
if Rauner mentions Madigan or Dems have not compromied, or if he doesn’t mention revenue is needed/tax increase in order to balance the budget, I don’t see the point of this other than normal campaign talk.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:54 pm:
===maybe, if networks actually broadcast entire speech, and if people actually watch it, otherwise just normal sound bites that will replay at 10pm and most people won’t pay attention===
It’s the editing to make the commercials.
Like…
“We’re going live to Gov. Rauner, speaking about unity.., ”
News outlet after news outlet, their lead ins… all saying “Rauner” and “unity”
It’s genius.
- baloneymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 5:58 pm:
I was speaking to the perceived “honest” attempt to get a budget passed. if this is only for a tv commercial down the road, its wasting everyone’s time. mad genius maybe I’ll give you.
- baloneymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:07 pm:
well my local NBC station said they would go live then never did. speech is over and news just finished the weather.
- Because I Said So.... - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:07 pm:
Another smiley campaign speech. More of the same, ugh!
- Henry Francis - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:09 pm:
We all remember his “off script” break from his SOTS where he personally thanked leader Cullerton and Radogno on their efforts towards the Grand Compromise.
This is more phony lip service to hide his true intentions.
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:10 pm:
From the Scribble Feed:
Dem Rep. Greg Harris: “The governor is talking out of both sides of his mouth”
I watched WICS’s coverage, and Rauner looked like he had taken a happy pill. His mouth was also somewhat twisted, so it did look like he was talking out of both sides of his mouth. Very plastic delivery of little substance.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:10 pm:
One tie, two dropped “G”s, a reference to Lincoln’s “House Divided”, and not much else…
- Aspects - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:12 pm:
I have never watched a Rauner speech, but I only made it thirty seconds before changing the channel. His smile seemed disingenuous and made me feel uncomfortable.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:13 pm:
It’s Rauner’s way or the highway–no surprise there. The screen shot of Rauner’s supporters misspelling words in this thread is hilarious.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:13 pm:
The purpose of the exercise was to generate local TV talking heads and front pages saying “governor calls for unity and balanced budget,” to be used in future ads.
That’s it.
- DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:14 pm:
Same old tripe. how cleaver to work in a house divided reference. Next time go to the Thompson Center and say the state if falling apart just like this building be creative. And please please tell me how balancing a budget can result in term limits? Altho to give him created he magnanimously threw himself on the term limit sword. Sort of a Kamikaze effect, at least if I go down I will take Madigan with me.
- DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:15 pm:
PS: find a G when speaking
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:19 pm:
He really had to quote Lincoln’s House Divided speech in the Old State Capitol for this cynical, nonsensical, ego-stroke?
No clue, no class.
- Amalia - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:20 pm:
watched the last half of GDrop on CBS Chicago, and then the whole thing on line. better on tv than the weird side lighting and GDrop waiting on the side in the dark coverage on his campaign site.
It was all rainbow/pony/puppy and lacking substance. Except for that term limit bit he dropped in the middle of a budget discussion. He clearly thinks his speech will prompt people to call and urge a vote for the GDrop compromise. He is wrong. weak.
- Annonin' - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:20 pm:

- DeseDemDose - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:31 pm:
Worse than Predicted, nothing from Rauner, Zip, Zero, same old old stale routine. He conned his way on TV, the top story on the evening 6:00pm news, and all us chumps watched. Unprecedented buffoonery.
- Macbeth - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:32 pm:
That whole thing — from the walk on to the walk off — was creepy from top to bottom.
The abandoned room. The sole light on Rauner’s right. The footsteps on the wooden floor. The worn, tired “house divided” quote. And then — above all else — Rauner’s delivery. It was like he was talking to a bunch of invisible idiots in the third grade. I mean, did this guy just learn how to read?
Finally — as if that’s not enough — the whole “god bless” invocations at the end. Three, slow, painful invocations? Good grief.
Hands down — hands down — the creepiest political speech I’ve ever seen. Ever.
- just sayin' - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:32 pm:
Wonder how much he paid for the smile coach? Also interesting how no “ing” ending words that I noticed so he didn’t have to fake the hillbilly thing this time.
Beyond that, just same old mush. No explanation why he ignored duty to submit a balanced budget all this time and of course no mention of enormous tax increase he’s ready to help the Dems impose on everyone.
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:32 pm:
Bruce should remind Illinois that decades of Madigan have ruined Illinois.
- Last Bull Moose - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:35 pm:
Does he realize that the “House divided against itself ” killed 600,000 people out of 20 million before unity prevailed? Our Civil War is our greatest political failure to date.
Makes Rauner look like a piker.
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 6:36 pm:
I’m tired of Bruce Rauner’s gubernatorial cos-play.

No, but underground parking garage entrance.
- cdog - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:02 pm:
“It is truly balanced.”
Ya, because Cullerton passed the revenue bill with all dem votes.
What’s he talking about? Will he have GOP votes on a revenue bill?
If so, that will be portal to the getting beyond this.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:02 pm:
So far… Best “Drop” of the Night…
Kennedy Crew on Rauner… “A few empty remarks in an empty room”
That’s a pretty good drop.
- Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:14 pm:
Epic fail, the first five minutes is always local news, went live to hear the govenor say “god bless” then laughter from the anchors. Red Skelton always ended his comedy skit with god bless
- Henry Francis - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:22 pm:
===Kennedy Crew on Rauner… “A few empty remarks in an empty room”. That’s a pretty good drop===
Agreed. I see JB used “sham” again. Too bad Goldberg didn’t trademark that, I am guessing it is gonna get a lot of use the next 16 months.
- peon - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:24 pm:
Very strange. Publicly defines failure as no budget in 10 days, and ties himself to the negotiations and crisis.
Does he know he is an incumbent ?
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:43 pm:
To be fair, Pritzker did respond with some trolling of “sham”… and this…
Biss… “Illinoisans were just subjected to the worst infomercial in our state’s fiscal history.”
That’s solid to the “salesman” trolling angle.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 20, 17 @ 7:49 pm:
Yeah, that was some weird show biz. Very funereal.
What’s he lookin’ at, anyway? Shouldn’t he be lookin’ at the camera, connectin’ with the viewer?
His peeps put it up on their website. For some reason, they didn’t edit, and left about two full minutes at the beginnin’ of Rauner just standin’ by himself in the corner in the dark.

Exactly. What I said above: one of the creepiest political addresses ever. Not sure what his folks were thinking: empty room, footsteps, no audience, ghost lights?
And the weird hissing soundtrack at the beginning? Bumps, footsteps?
Hands down: creepiest political address by an Illinois governor — ever.

He’d definately make a good Lurch for “The Addams Family”.
