Rauner takes questions for first time in several days

Friday, Jun 23, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner was on the Big John & Ramblin’ Ray show today

We’ve compromised relentlessly for two years. And we’ve backed off on so many things.

Right now there’s a proposal put forth by lawmakers. It’s a reasonable compromise. It moves on every regard. None of it is exactly where I think it should be. But it’s a good step in the right direction. It’s being criticized by the left, it’s being criticized by the right. That’s by definition a compromise. By definition it’s somewhere in the middle.

And what we’ve gotta do is get a balanced budget to my desk. These guys have gotta do their jobs. A balanced budget proposal is on the table. If somebody doesn’t like that, so be it. Put a balanced budget on my desk so I can sign it.

He’s obviously still having trouble with the concept of “compromise.” Backing off demands like “right to work” that can in no way ever become reality isn’t compromising, it’s recognizing harsh reality. And a Republican budget plan isn’t “by definition” a compromise.

Also, putting a balanced budget on his desk is about the easiest thing the House could do. It’s all the other stuff he wants before he’ll sign the budget that is the main holdup here.

* One other notable quote

We’ve gotta stop having politics and game-playing going on.

Practice what you preach, sir.

When they followed up by asking him about those anti-Madigan TV ads, he characterized them as “direct communication” to Illinoisans.

The man still has no self awareness.

It’s almost as though someone very close to the Governor and Rich Miller likes touting their brilliant “direct communication” strategy.

“We’ve compromised relentlessly for two years”

Someone needs to place a phone call.

    This guy’s toast.

    This is soooo spot on.

Rauner is inherently disingenuous to his political core, thinking everything he says will come across as honest, or wing be challenged by anyone.

So far, politically, it’s served Rauner incredibly well.

Even Rauner has to be amazed at the passes he continually gets, not by the press or overall media, but by Democrats as a whole. I mean, seriously, Rauner gets phonier and phonier by the hour and it’s like Rauner and his Crew push this envelope with open-eyed amazement… “We can say anything, there’s no pushback… Let’s try this… ”

Is there not 5-6 interns that can just… respond… to some of this?

Rauner doesn’t surprise me anymore, but what surprises me is how far Rauner and the Rauner Word Jumble will push, knowing they are the lone message. This is no exception.

” it’s being criticized by the right”

There is the reason why IPI went after it.

Simply so Rauner could say this

    Perfidy on Rauners part
    Perfidy on IPI/Proft part

    Which sets up the instinctual

“Reaction formation” of the base Republican.

===There is the reason why IPI went after it. Simply so Rauner could say this===

The institute would do this no matter who was governor. It’s their whole raison d’etre. If they favored a tax hike they’d lose their base. Period.

  8. - Anon221 - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 12:44 pm:

THIS is Dartmouth and Harvard logic???

” It’s being criticized by the left, it’s being criticized by the right. That’s by definition a compromise. By definition it’s somewhere in the middle.”

Sounds more like the Hokey Pokey.

  9. - The Dude Abides - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 12:47 pm:

Yesterday after meeting with Madigan, Durkin said that the House GOP would not discuss a revenue plan until they get reforms. Those instructions were straight from Rauner. What Madigan told Rauner two years ago is the same today. The non budgetary items Rauner is insisting on is making getting a budget passed much more complex and difficult. In politics it is very difficult to get too many things done all at once and that’s why we are where we’re at.
Our best and perhaps only shot at getting a full budget by fall is to not do a K-12 only budget between now and September.

  10. - Honeybear - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 12:56 pm:

Fair enough Rich. However I seem to have a memory of other raison d’être issues that they have been silent on. Whatevs as you say. Let me make another run at it.

Rauner counted on this reaction so that he could say this. Either way it supports Raunrs desperate desire to appear like he is compromising.

I believe that Rauner is incapable of compromise

    Compromise is not winning

  11. - Pundent - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:01 pm:

Rauner’s idea of compromise is “give me what I want so I can blame you for what I need,”.

    cdog:
You might be surprised (and a little nauseated like I am) at how much support Rauner has even with his poll numbers.
Where I live it seems like most of the people who are taking sides in the budget situation are on Rauners side because they are believing what he is saying on tv.

  13. - cdog - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:23 pm:

bttff, I know some of those folks too. I try to enlighten them but sadly the bottom line is both Rauner and Madigan have poor character and they’re allowed to still have power.

    Marginalize the bad eggs, Springfield.

(Reminds me of the educated eggdicator on Willy Wonka. :) Bunch of bad eggs.)

  14. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:24 pm:

RNUG, he’s doing a bit. Rauner is plenty aware of what he’s doing, but he can’t honestly cop to it for obvious reasons.

  15. - Biscuit Head - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:38 pm:

    More of the same.
He’s gotta keep lyin’ so he can keep foolin’ some of the people some of the time - or at least enough to get reelected and continue his destruction of the State for another 4 years.

This sounds much better to the public than “I have been unable to accomplish anything in 4 years because of other people that won their elections. Vote for me so I can continue to accomplish nothing.”

  16. - sonny chiss - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:51 pm:

===If they favored a tax hike they’d lose their base. Period.===

Do they have to come out so rabidly against it though? Seems to me like they doth protest too much. Plus, Rauner is working so hard at projecting this image of “I’m reasonable, I’m compromising and they are not”. Maybe I’ve got my tinfoil hat on but I think it fits Rauner’s MO.

  17. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 1:57 pm:

“Even Rauner has to be amazed at the passes he continually gets, not by the press or overall media, but by Democrats as a whole. I mean, seriously, Rauner gets phonier and phonier by the hour and it’s like Rauner and his Crew push this envelope with open-eyed amazement… “

Willy, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that Rauner is watching the success Trump has had lying his rear end off on a daily and often hourly basis with zero repercussions. I used to think the parallels between Rauner and Trump were misplaced. Now they’re acting like two peas in the pod. Dissembling. Disingenuous. Disgusting.

  18. - DuPage Bard - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 2:17 pm:

So how is Rauner paying for this balanced budget? The Capitol Compromise is $5 billion out of whack, right?

  19. - Pundent - Friday, Jun 23, 17 @ 2:50 pm:

Honeybear - The IPI only illustrates the problem that Republicans face. As Rich says this will always be the IPI’s position.

The Republicans can do math just as easily as the Democrats can. They know that revenue is required. But they’re in a corner because they’d like to lay this all at the feet of the Democrats (they’d do that regardless of whether Rauner was in office or not). This issue isn’t lost on Madigan and it doesn’t help that this clear need has been cast as a want by “taxhikemike”. It only increases Madigan’s insistence that more R votes are needed on the structured roll call. I’m not sure if we ever get to that point as bad as things are. But you can be certain that Madigan is not going to where the jacket for the tax hikes that Rauner needs so Bruce can get the reforms that he wants.
