Rate the new “Do Your Job, Inc.” TV ad

Wednesday, Jul 19, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Tribune

A group that ran ads during the late stages of Illinois’ budget impasse is going back on TV for three days to urge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to support a Democratic plan to pay for the state’s public schools.

The group is Do Your Job Inc., which is led by state Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Tinley Park; state Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie; and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael T. Carrigan.

A significant problem remains with the budget plan enacted by lawmakers earlier this month over Rauner’s veto — namely a new method to distribute state public school funding. Without approval of a new funding formula, schools don’t get any state money. Democrats have passed legislation to change the distribution method, but it gives more money to Chicago Public Schools than a Republican alternative.

Democrats have withheld sending the bill to Rauner because he has vowed to use his veto powers to rewrite it, contending the money for CPS is a “bailout.” That ratchets up pressure as the opening date for schools gets nearer. […]

The tax-exempt group said it has purchased $118,000 of TV time on broadcast and cable markets across the state to air the ad from Wednesday through Friday evening.

* Here’s the ad

* Script…

90 percent. That’s how much of the school funding bill that Gov. Rauner agrees with. So why in the world would he threaten to veto it?

Because Rauner won’t budge on his extreme agenda. He digs in, no matter the cost.

Republicans and Democrats had to go over his head to fix Rauner’s budget crisis. And now, he’s after our schools. Without the money, some won’t reopen this fall. Other schools may close their doors by Thanksgiving.

Tell Gov. Rauner, ‘Sign the bill. Do your job.

    A+
The “simple is elegant” messaging that got Rauner the office (Shake Up Springfield) has been weaponized against him (Do Your Job).
PS - Thanks Chance the Rapper - you probably should have trademarked that one!

  2. - Roman - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:32 am:

Decent. The glass half full (or 90 percent full,) is clever, but maybe too clever. Surprisingly nice pic of Rauner.

But the “Do your job” theme works.

  3. - Rocky Rosi - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:33 am:

    I give it a C
That ad is not made for prime time TV. It a little to dark and gloomy for my taste.

  4. - Joe M - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:36 am:

A photo of Rauner looking disheveled or mean or both, might have been better than the smiling photo they used.

  5. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:36 am:

    ===Surprisingly nice pic of Rauner.===

    I noticed that, too.

  6. - d.p.gumby - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:37 am:

Solid A. And using the nice pix of Brucie increases it’s credibility.

  7. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:38 am:

Democrats have strange definition of an extreme agenda- pension reform. Funny how they leave that part out of the ad.

Even though Speaker Madigan says they are unsustainable, Chicago cannot afford to make the pension payments to CPS, President Cullerton proposed a comprehensive bill and Moody’s and Fitch’s say it is necessary.

As usual, they are in the extreme, refusing to fix a broken system that is bankrupting Illinois.

  8. - PublicServant - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:41 am:

Very good ad. I give it a A. As for the photo of Rauner being too “nice”, it separates the ad from the usual attack ad, emphasizing the message without relianceon cartoonish villain images.

  9. - Phil King - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:43 am:

Disingenuous. You have to ask what the 10% is.

  10. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:44 am:

The script needs to be tightened so “90 percent” and threat to schools not opening/closing can be said twice. Repition is critical.

I’d eliminate the second graph entirely and tighten the third to make air for it. No need to mention budget, the focus is schools.

    C.

A Plus. I love when the fans become the coaches. It’s a lot harder than you think.

  12. - My New Handle - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:46 am:

Seemed weak, too much explanation that I believe many won’t understand. Plus there shouldn’t there be some ask to “message this together?”

    ===…Moody’s… say it is necessary.===

Gov. Rauner says to ignore Moody’s. You need to set Rauner straight, - Lucky Pierre -

    To the Post,

    It’s a straight up “B”

    “Why?”

Flattering picture of Rauner is an unforced error and while grabbing pertinent headlines and framing, there isn’t really a strong “immediacy”…

… Thanksgiving? “That’s a long way away” was my thought people may have. There is little to speak to how grave it is when the “deadline” for some seems so “far”

It’s salvaged with “Do your job”

It’s critical that the comtinued drumbeat Chance coined about the disinterested governor continues.

They can do better here. It started so promising with the glass of water.

    Solid “B”

  14. - Real - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:47 am:

    LP

Following any of IPI’s advice is extreme. This is also why many of his top staff resigned recently. So not only do democrats believe he is extreme, but many of his top former staff and GOP leaders think so too.

  15. - Anon - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:49 am:

D for misinformation. It would be an impactful video if there were actually a school funding formula bill on his desk to sign.

  16. - Real - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:50 am:

I forgot to mention I give the ad a solid A

  17. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:51 am:

Never make your opposition look good/normal. Cartoon character Rauner would be better.

@Tom- The people who make the ads are not the audience. If they can’t handle a critique (if they are reading) then they have bigger issues. BTW- in my opinion @Word is a coach to me. His is some of the most insightful commentary.

  18. - Tom - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:53 am:

@Oswego @JSMill–focus group after focus group will tell you if you use a very unflattering picture of an opponent, the ad is less effective. Much easier from the stands.

  19. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:55 am:

Gppd point how can he do his job and sign the bill if the Democrats won’t do their job and send it to him?

Oh wait they are holding school children hostage for their agenda that protects their special interest groups and does not reform pensions.

  20. - Square Pegs - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:56 am:

I like the ad, generally. I do not like he “Extreme Agenda” section. It will be a turnoff for any moderate or undecided. People are so tired of the dramatics. Just get to the point.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:58 am:

    ===Much easier from the stands.===

    Huh.

No wonder Rauner continues to clean the clocks of Dems and Dem messaging.

    Thank goodness for Chance, eh?

Otherwise what would this ad really be about.

    “Much easier from the stands”

Thank goodness chance showed the “non-stands” players they grossly lack.

  22. - Me Again - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 9:59 am:

I give the ad a solid “A”. As Illinois goes into the toilet, Diana Rauner says that she’s never seen him so happy.

  23. - Tom - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:00 am:

@Oswego did you say cleaning clocks or cleaning house. Hehe. Great few months for the maids in the gov’s office. Oh–and last I checked, 36 percent in the public polling for Bruces favs. Good job, team. Great messaging.

  24. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:02 am:

==Democrats have strange definition of an extreme agenda- pension reform.==

I’m OK calling unconstitutional proposals that give the government the power to break its contracts extreme, so you’re just going to have rewrite your “Rauner the Valiant” fanfic.

To the ad: putting a negative ad on TV and reinforcing the “do your job” slogan is probably more important than any specifics of the script, visuals, etc.

  25. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:04 am:

    – too dark and gloomy–

Closing schools is a tough subject for a “Bringing Up Baby” screwball rom-com. Plus, the point is to heighten urgency to drive the call to action.

  26. - Seats - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:05 am:

Can a list be found anywhere of schools who have said they won’t be able to open in the Fall or have given other specific times that they’d have to shut down such as x-mas break.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:06 am:

    - Tom -

Good thing Rauner is cleaning house for Dems. They’ve owned the stage.

It’s quite pathetic to take credit for being so inept that Chance was a better messenger than all the Dems combined.

I may have to rethink how awful those thinking they “know” screwed up 6 seats that went to Rauner.

  28. - Anon - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:06 am:

Frankly incredibly misleading. As others have stated - what is this 10%? I bet most people don’t know that it’s a CPS clause. What’s more, didn’t he already go on record that he will line item veto it not outright veto? If so- then he will be true to his word, right? He agrees with 90% and will veto the 10% he disagrees with.

Lastly - and perhaps most to the point, it needs to be on his desk to do anything. Why is the legislature dragging its feet on this? (rhetorical question because it is obvious - they want maximum chaos by pushing it as close to school start as they can… stop playing games legislature, get this to his desk to keep it moving, bad or good).

  29. - Sue - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:08 am:

For those of you open to facts- look at the other voices section on bottom of Tribune opinion page. What a shock- total correlation between states with Blue control and their fiscal solvency. And of course we are the worst of the worst

  30. - Cindy Lou - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:16 am:

The very happy picture of Rauner fits the ‘he has never been happier’ theme Diana told us about. Doom and gloom approaches, yet Rauner is happy happy happy.

  31. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:17 am:

    ==what is this 10%?==

I mean, unless he was talking about percentage of words in the bill, it kinda doesn’t matter. If you like 90% of a bill, declare victory and throw a party.

==What’s more, didn’t he already go on record that he will line item veto it not outright veto?==

Amendatory veto. The process is different enough that it threatens school openings in a way that a line-item veto wouldn’t.

== If so- then he will be true to his word==

    The charge wasn’t that he’s a liar.

==Why is the legislature dragging its feet on this?==

Because when the Gov says he’s going to veto your bill as soon as you send it to him, you hold off in hopes of changing his mind.

  32. - hisgirlfriday - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:20 am:

Watched without sound and like others thought they picked a too-nice photo of Rauner. The 90 percent full glass was smart but overall ad not too impactful IMO.

  33. - JoeMaddon - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:20 am:

Sue - correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that each of the bottom five States had GOP governors.

  34. - lake county democrat - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:20 am:

Is it just me or is this ad *more* persuasive because it doesn’t demonize Rauner with a terrible picture? This ad aims higher than most. Overall I think it’s pretty good.

  35. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:22 am:

    Good ad.
    Clean and clear.
You have to be an extremist to quibble with it.
    Or willfully foolish.
The quote is from a Rauner cabinet officer.

    What was the 10%?
Common sense says you take 90% and not ruin everything by demanding the other 10. Governors cash in a winning hand of 90%. Anyone would, except someone who wants to deliberately ruin everything.

These pro-Rauner posters are an embarrassment to common sense.

  36. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:26 am:

When everything is “extreme” nothing is extreme. I think the ad has a potentially receptive audience and a theoretically decent message about the 90%. But since it contains two of my no-no’s for political ads–the overused word “extreme” –and the ever bossy “tell so and so to do so and so”, I can only give it a C. Change those two things and they might have had an A ad.

  37. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:30 am:

Since there are 33 Republican Governors and only 16 Democrats and one independent, it would stand to reason that more Republicans would be in the top ten and bottom 10

All of top 10 are Republican led by two Republican leading blue states Massachusetts and Maryland. The bottom 10 have 8 Republicans and one Democrat and one independent.

The common denominator in the bottom 10 are large unfunded pension obligations.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:34 am:

===Since there are 33 Republican Governors and only 16 Democrats and one independent, it would stand to reason that more Republicans would be in the top ten and bottom 10===

This is the updated poll from yesterday

Actually bottom 10 have 2 Democrats and one Independent

  40. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:35 am:

A- The ad could have mentioned that the budget bill reformed state pensions by adding a choice of tier 3 for new and tier 2 employees.

  43. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 10:48 am:

As Sue states from today’s Tribune editorial page What Others Are Saying Section:

According to the latest ranking of states by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, the most fiscally sound states in the nation are all low tax strongholds while the 10 least solvent states are almost all high tax and heavily Democratic.

Nearly bankrupt Illinois is at the bottom of all but one of the five individual measures. Of the top 25 most solvent states, all but 4 are solidly Republican. Of the bottom 25 states all but 5 are solidly Democratic.

    https://www.mercatus.org/statefiscalrankings

We will see if Illinois voter choose the candidate who will address this insolvency by promising to reform pensions or choose the party that is ignoring the problem.

Democrats have promised reforms now that the budget is passed.

Who really believes they will act now after stonewalling for 2 1/2 years?

You are making a case that “Pat Quinn failed” because of Idaho…

    What?

Rauner is a failed governor. That’s on him, not on Michigan or Colorado, or even New Mexico.

    Good try, thou.

  46. - Sue - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 11:05 am:

Joe Mason- do you think because we have a R Governor that the Dems don’t rule the Roost-

  47. - Dome Gnome - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 11:06 am:

I like it because it puts the focus on Rauner’s lack of work ethic. What has he done for us lately? Or ever?

  48. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 11:08 am:

    Let’s make this clearer.
I’m not voting for a Republican if it is Bruce Rauner.
I don’t live in any other state, but Illinois.
I cannot vote out Madigan to end this horrific government disaster.
I don’t care about any other state. I live here.
    Do you?
If you do then you must be fully aware that the current governor must be replaced. Not because of party. But because he has no credibility as a governor, can’t pass his reform agenda, and can’t sell his reforms because he’s been a disaster.

I don’t want to read comparisons.
I want Bruce Rauner out of office so badly, I would vote for OJ Simpson if he wanted the job.

See what you pro-Rauner bloggers are up against?
I am not a Democrat. I am no fan of the status quo. I don’t want higher taxes. I don’t want liberal government. But based upon reality seen by having Bruce Rauner as governor,

Stop defending the indefensible. Stop digging through Rauner’s mountain of manure to find that pony he promised you. Stop being a gullible rube and start looking for a Rauner alternative now.

  49. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 11:21 am:

Exactly Pat Quinn failed because of Idaho

You have jumped the shark OW.

The most unpopular Governors lead states with huge unfunded pension liabilities.

You blame the unfunded pensions on Rauner.

Rauner is promising pension reform. Democrats advocate sweeping the problem under the rug which is how the pensions got in such bad shape in the first place.

Chris Kennedy is calling out the property tax shenanigans but no one is touching the 3rd rail of Democratic politics, pensions for state workers

  50. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 11:27 am:

    No, - Lucky Pierre -

The people of the fair state of Idaho didn’t elect Rauner or defeat Pat Quinn.

Just as Trump won the Presidency, but Hillary won Illinois by 17 points.

It’s Illinois. It’s always Illinois. Rauner is the failed governor of Illinois. Candidate Rauner tells me so.

===Chris Kennedy is calling out the property tax shenanigans===

With the money raised and burned through by Kennedy, he should think about using all that property tax ammo and run for Assessor, lol

  61. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 12:18 pm:

The Rauner team will be very pleased with the image they used of him that is allowed to endure through a long length of this and then is even reintroduced. That image really dominates the messaging. If you were casually passing and not listening closely, this could easily be construed as a Rauner promo. The Voiceover isn’t supported as well by the graphics coming up. Voice is more dramatic than the smaller graphic headlines.

This was done by an artsy person whose greatest desire is to win an ad award. It really flatters more than it attacks.

It’s the nicest produced “fail” I’ve seen in a long time. This crew is good and needs much better direction.

  62. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 12:37 pm:

Don’t be disappointed my blogging friend.
Both Woody and Cousin Oliver are more beloved and popular than Coach or Greg Brady.

  63. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 12:45 pm:

OK but both of you guys are more like Otis Campbell, than Woody or Coach.

Whatever you say. Decades to de program me?

How about decades to de program supporters of the Speaker for the past 35 years.

They somehow think the policies will start to work sometime soon, despite the failed record of his tenure in Springfield.

  64. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 12:52 pm:

===Please tell me we were never that gullible, were we?===

Taking points aren’t gullible. They can be wrong and stale and embarrassing and deflecting, but to be gullible, you have to care.

We care, so we had to be more gullible. Programming doesn’t allow for independent thought.

The “Oliver”, that stung, bud, lol.

You have my marker - VanillaMan. OW

    - Lucky Pierre -

Here’s the “sitch”… “Do Your Job” and “Bruce Rauner Fails” ring true to people because in governing… it’s true.

Otherwise, Chance and others wouldn’t have struck such a nerve.

    Thems the breaks.

  65. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 12:56 pm:

Keep digging for that pony LP.
Yup - that could be pony poo.

Excuse the rest of us as we move on. We have to find a real governor with real ponies, not just the horses**t, that Rauner has given us.

  66. - Trapped in the 'burbs - Wednesday, Jul 19, 17 @ 4:21 pm:

Hey LP, Rauner has to wear the jacket for his utter failure to achieve any of his objectives. When Oswego Willy makes any point about Rauner, you accuse him of being a Madigan sycophant. This attack and deflect method is useless. OW is no Madigan apologist. Your scam is like denying Illinois should fire Lovie Smith because of his record of wins and losses by pointing out a coach at a different school has a worse record. Man up and accept that your guy has failed miserably at his attempt to fix Illinois. In large measure, he has yet to articulate any plans to achieve any of his objectives, present a balanced budget or demonstrate any path to success. Saying no when he lacks the votes to pass legislation is not leadership. Accepting Madigan is largely responsible for the mess and pointing out that Rauner found a way to make it worse doesn’t make me a leftist bomb thrower. I’m just paying attention. Try a come back that doesn’t include accusing everybody of blindly supporting Madigan. Address Rauner’s failure to this point and explain his path to turn around his administration.

Again, it’s funny you identify the Governor as a complete failure with your comments and you don’t even realize you’re doing it.

Why would I want to vote for a guy who hasn’t managed to accomplish anything while he’s been in office? The environment isn’t likely to change as far as the makeup of the GA. Still going to be Democratic I would imagine. So why do I want to vote for a guy who has proven he can’t get anything accomplished with that GA?

If you want someone who rants and raves and consistently plays the victim then Rauner is your guy. If you want someone who can govern, I would suggest people look elsewhere.
