Rauner explains his weight loss

Friday, Aug 18, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Tribune

The lanky governor — he’s 6 feet 4 inches — didn’t exactly carry excess baggage on his frame to start with, but he’s lost 20 pounds since his election, he said on WTTW-Ch. 11’s “Chicago Tonight” earlier this week.

Asked about it during the Illinois State Fair this week, Rauner said there’s no secret, special diet or workout regime behind his weight loss.

“It’s just hard work,” he told Chicago Inc.

* Pretty much everybody who has seen him up close, particularly when he’s not wearing a jacket or a vest, has noticed how thin he is these days. You can really see it in his own video…

    “Backbone of our state”

    “It’s a broken system.”

    “Well, I’d say … it’s a broken system.”

“My wife and I have given millions.”

    “Backbone.”

    “Madigan.”

    “Madigan.”

Billionaire politicians rarely, if ever, get it. You can’t buy an office and then think you can do everything your way.

    He’s stressed out. No doubt.

  3. - Archiesmom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:45 am:

It’s been easy to tell from the way his clothes hanging off them, even when he’s wearing a jacket.

  4. - Archiesmom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:46 am:

Clothes are hanging off him – I hate the way dictation gets changed before you even have a chance to hit the send button.

  5. - Flynn's mom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:48 am:

    His body is broken.

  6. - Anon221 - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:48 am:

Or, maybe it’s too much rollerblading. /s

I love CapFax but I have to ask: who cares? I greatly dislike the guy and everything he stands for but it’s not like it’s some big secret he’s got an incredibly stressful job with lots of travel.

Don’t know that cracking jokes about his physical appearance is smart or kind.

  8. - Flynn's mom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:49 am:

You’d think a rich guy like him could hire a tailor.

His devotion and selflessness are moving.

It’s just hard work, not sleeping at night, barely eating, stress…

  12. - Curl of the Burl - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:52 am:

I sat behind him when he attended my church near the end of session. He looked much thinner than the last time I had seen him. He has always been thin, though.

  13. - Dirty Red - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 9:54 am:

    = who cares? =

The health and well-being of the state’s chief executive is not something to be concerned about?

= Don’t know that cracking jokes about his physical appearance is smart or kind. =

    Agreed.

Really sad comments by too many here on this.

I think its way more than 20 lbs. Maybe some medical marijuana would fix the problem?

  20. - Texas Red - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:00 am:

Hope there is noting seriously wrong with the Governor. I sincerely wish him and all our elected officials good health, regardless of party.

  21. - Nice - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:01 am:

Maybe he’s losing weight so he can be the complete opposite of JB….

  22. - Jocko - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:03 am:

He hasn’t been honest about anything else…why start now.

  23. - Real - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:04 am:

Holding budgets hostage, withholding school funding, and doing nothing but campaigning for 3 years is not hard work.

  24. - LINK - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:06 am:

Reminds me of, “Education is our future, because schools IS this nations backbone.”

  25. - Soccermom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:06 am:

When I’m under stress, I gain weight. Why is life so unfair?

  26. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:06 am:

    Money can’t buy you happiness.

  27. - Earnest - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:09 am:

    >“It’s just hard work,”

I’ll take him at his word on this. Agree or disagree with his actions, he has worked very hard.

    ===The lanky governor — he’s 6 feet 4 inches===

    I thought he’s 6′7″ or 6′8″?

  29. - DuPage - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:15 am:

Governor, don’t neglect your health. See your doctor regularly for check-ups, and anything unusual like losing 20 pounds when you are not trying to lose weight.

  30. - Rocky Rosi - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:26 am:

I just spoke with him and his weight loss is due to diet and long work hours. Veggie and fish diet can do wonders.

  31. - wondering - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:32 am:

We now know J.B.’s true motivation for running. And we thought noblesse oblige.

  32. - Mike Royko - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:35 am:

most people are overweight and so people who aren’t look sick.

  33. - Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:36 am:

Wow he is even skinnier now than three months ago. Hope he is okay. From a political standpoint, he should try gaining back some weight. When your negatives are as high as they are, you aren’t even going to have a chance to win an election if people think you are sick.

  34. - David - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:37 am:

I have a veggie and some fish diet but I have not managed that kind of weight loss. He can afford to see the Doctor. But if he wants to waste all his money on pointless crusted so be it.

  35. - Glengarry - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:38 am:

he’s just in anti Pritzker mode.

Umm, Hello ?!?Madigan has been buying the state jobs,, for..40 years! Who’s kettle is blacker?

  37. - Tough Guy - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:49 am:

Saw the Governor drinking Stag beer (Steak, Taters, And, Gravy) last Thursday night after the parade in the Coors tent. Thought he looked thin then. Few more nights of drinking Stag will take care of that.

  38. - RNUG - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:51 am:

== doing nothing but campaigning for 3 years is not hard work. ==

Actually, campaigning is hard work, little exercise, and all kinds of generally unhealthy food or just snacks because of skipped meals.

Seriously, whether intentional or not, the weight loss foes make him look stressed out.

  39. - Langhorne - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:52 am:

    “Succeeded at everything”

    “Never been happier”

  40. - RNUG - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:52 am:

Does, not foes … although I have to admit spell check did give it an interesting twist.

  41. - Keyrock - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 10:52 am:

I do hope he is ok. He may need to go off the Pineapple
    Diet.

sharkette - the only difference is Rauner uses his own money to buy the office, Madigan uses everyone else’s money.

  44. - Mittuns - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 11:18 am:

Bruce Rauner and the calories he controls.

  45. - cdog - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 11:36 am:

Somebody bring the guy a few milkshakes per week. That will fix it in no time, trust me.

  46. - LizPhairTax - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 11:41 am:

Mark Giangreco would advise saying nothing

  47. - RIJ - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 11:49 am:

He looks like my father did just before his final cancer decline. Is Rauner physically ill? I’m actually concerned for him.

  48. - walker - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 11:55 am:

Noticed this and simply hoped he is well.

  49. - Soccermom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 12:08 pm:

Mike Royko, is that really you?

(Seriously, that name belongs to one person, and he’s gone. Cut it out.)

  50. - allknowingmasterofracoondom - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 12:11 pm:

He is my friend. He is not sick, but appreciate the concern and I am sure he does as well.

  51. - Anon - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 12:31 pm:

He’s trying out his David Byrne costume.

  52. - Because I said so.... - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 12:40 pm:

I work pretty hard during session and have the opposite problem.

  53. - Amalia - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 12:52 pm:

I dislike the guy, but the weight police have to stand down. enough with body observation. action observation, brain activity observation please.. I don’t care who looks however. I care what people do. Lookist stuff is ridiculous.

  54. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 1:04 pm:

Soccermom, I have the same problem you do with stress and I have plenty right now. Elastic waist pants only go so far…

  55. - igotgotgotgotnotime - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 1:41 pm:

Droppin'’Gs” and droppin’ ‘lbs’, comes with the territory.

  56. - JP Altgeld - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 2:11 pm:

He’s obviously under a ton of stress which is tough. He’s done some super strange things in the last few years but I doubt anyone can ever say that he hasn’t absolutely worked his tail off. Probably the second hardest worker in SPF.

  57. - IllinoisBoi - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 2:21 pm:

I’m not a Rauner fan, but seriously — he looks so gaunt that I wonder about his health.

  58. - Veil of Ignorance - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 2:36 pm:

It’s the “shaking up Springfield” diet…

  59. - X-prof - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 2:48 pm:

Could be stress, depression or something even more serious. Not a healthy look or something you’d work for. Although I detest his policies and callousness, there’s no snark from me on this one.

  60. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Aug 18, 17 @ 4:18 pm:

This job and the way he works at it are clearly a long way from the cigar room at GTCR. Godspeed, Governor.
