Mixed messaging is always the best messaging

* The governor’s campaign sent this out late this afternoon…
It’s been a busy week in Illinois where we took steps forward on pension reform and criminal justice reform, and legislative leaders came to an agreement on a historic school funding bill that will bring more money and more choice to our education system. Gov. Rauner applauds the legislative leaders for coming together to compromise and looks forward to passing this legislation.

* The Sun-Times, by the way, picked up on the governor’s Marion comments…
Gov. Bruce Rauner told Downstate business leaders on Friday that legislators are “very close to a final deal” on education funding reform — but he blasted Speaker Mike Madigan for putting “a bunch of bad things” in the bill — including “money that shouldn’t go to Chicago.”
The governor’s tone is unlike a statement his office released on Thursday in announcing the agreement in which he applauded the leaders and said he looked forward to seeing a deal get passed in both chambers.
On Friday, the governor told the Marion Chamber of Commerce he wants to “fix” problems within the deal in another bill. […]
Madigan spokesman Steve Brown on Friday declined to comment on the governor’s call for another bill, but remained optimistic that the deal could be finalized.
“There’s no reason to believe anything has changed,” Brown said.
Background is here.
I’m getting whiplash.

Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown.

It doesn’t even make sense.
There’s not even a first bill yet. Why would there be a second bill to undo what he’s agreed to?
He gets really scatterbrained off-script.

Ever notice now Rauner’s eyes cross when he thinks?

Really? I thought you would be used to this administration constantly sowing confusion. I certainly am.
- Anoniphone - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:01 pm:
I want to you play poker with Rauner. He, literally, is all tell.
And the look when he realized it needed 3/5? My god — that was priceless. A guy nowhere near as smart or savvy as he thinks. He’s a fish.

Let him pound out his frustration in a trailer bill and move on.

There are still some competent professionals left in the Governor’s office.
Whether the Gov himself is a competent professional…

Pass something now and we’ll fix it later. (Never works that way, never.)
If he saying that he’ll fix it later, it means he lost the game but doesn’t want people to think he lost it.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:03 pm:
It’s an old dodge that Rauner hopes no one is paying attention overall to what he says, or to whom he’s saying it to.
Upstate, Downstate, this Edit Board, that Organization…
I stand for this, I need to say that…
Honesty? Why should Rauner start being honest now?
- VanillaMan - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:05 pm:
Rauner is so disconnected from his duties as governor, he doesn’t know what to begin wrecking until he sees something accomplished first.
He seems to really think his job is to wreck any possible accomplishments. He’s the driver who thinks that the guardrails are there to let you sleep at the wheel. He really seems to think his job isn’t to do anything constructive, just destructive.
What a horrible character trait for a leader.

Seems to me Rauner is just playing to what he sees as his base supporters. “See, there’s this reform bill that Madigan added nefarious stuff to. Well, I gotta sign it cuz I got no choice. But don’t worry, your knight in shining armor will ride to your rescue with a bill to fix it later”.
- Gruntled University Employee - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:06 pm:
Mixed messaging from the Rauner camp? Gee, it’s like he fired his communications team. /s
- Henry Francis - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:07 pm:
He was just peddlin’ snake oil to the rubes in Marion.
He will sign the bill (if it gets to him). He has to.
There is no fix it (duct tape?) bill.
- Earnest - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:07 pm:
I think pieces of paper just got mixed up. The clean up bill left over from the Superstars and SB1, the bunch of bad things stuff was from the BTIAtm AV, the close to a final deal is just something he’s says out of habit these days, and the Madigan is bad thing is his argument for being re-elected. /s

It’s late Friday afternoon. Isn’t it time to fire somebody, Governor?
- Michelle Flaherty - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:20 pm:
that’s quite the Rauner turnaround.

If he can create enough “fixes” needed in another bill(s) he’ll obviously need a second term to for all those needed fixes.
- G'Kar - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:24 pm:
That should be 47th Ward
- Honeybadger - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:26 pm:
He just can’t help himself, can he?

How did the Marion Chamber take this ramble down delirium lane? With lots of eye rolls, or is this what passes for competent stewardship to them?
- Mama - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:32 pm:
I still don’t believe Rauner will sign the education reform bill because it doesn’t break the teacher’s unions. He will just continue to claim Madigan made changes he did not agree with.

- JS Mill - Friday, Aug 25, 17 @ 4:35 pm:
Huh, the governor is not happy with a bipartisan deal that he was lauding?
That is so unusual, it almost never happens. /s

The Gov was just servin up some Friday red meat to the base - nothin wrong with that because you know what, it ain’t Lent.
