Senate approves education funding reform bill 38-13-4
Tuesday, Aug 29, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * Roll call… Sen. Hunter rose after the vote to say she meant to vote “Present” instead of “No.” Also, notice how Sen. McCann voted. He’s a strong IEA ally as well as a possible GOP candidate for governor. * Not unexpected…
* This is a valid point. There’s no question that the leaders rushed the bill through and no hearings were held on new stuff, like the income tax credit…
* Every statewide candidate is still in the hunt for a teachers union endorsement…
* This is an historic vote and Sen. Andy Manar really deserves a lot of credit for sticking with this issue for well over four years and finally bringing it home…
* Best chuckle of the day…

Can somebody help me remember what Schimpf said a couple weeks ago about CPS bailout.
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:02 pm:
Congrats to Sen. Manar and all who worked so hard to put together and pass this historic legislation.

“The funding disparity between what Chicago gets and what the rest of the state gets is fairly significant,” Schimpf said. http://www.bnd.com/news/local/article167020232.html

This historic bill makes Manar a strong contender for Senator of the year.
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:06 pm:
Excellent points all around. Congratulations (exclamation point)

Rich. Thanks
He must have thought they were shorted

Illinois won… Let’s get this signed.

“Sen Harmon (with a dig to Gov Rauner): “I rise in support of 90 percent of the motion.”
Touche Don Harmon!
And yea, nobody on my side of the aisle likes the pseudo-vouchers. But sometimes you have to accept 90% of a loaf and move on. This was one of those times.

Looks like Moodys just upgraded CPS TO AA-.

I don’t like Sam’s vote … but I understand why he voted that way.

Will the scholarship tax credits pass constitutional muster?
- Ed Observer - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:15 pm:
Truly, this is an historic day in Illinois. And done so in a bipartisan manner. Good for kids, good for schools and good for Illinois.
- Loop Lady - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:17 pm:
I am proud of the legislature for the first time since…
- Blue dog dem - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:17 pm:
RNUG. You know me. Forever the cynic. Dont most of these folks do what they do for the same reason? Isnt it usually political calculation?
- Sue - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 2:55 pm:
A case out of the Seventh Circuit is now up at the Dupreme Ct to revisit the Freidrich 4/4 ruling. When the Supremes Outlaw the mandatory dues for public sector unions both the IEA and IFT will lose their clout which will greatly benefit Illinois legislative politics
- thechampaignlife - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:12 pm:
If they hate the scholarship program so much, pass a trailer bill to eliminate it.
- Redraider - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:28 pm:
Sue, yep great point you make. It is always better for our politics when corporations are considered people and decisions like Citizens United do nothing but help the people get their voices heard. At least you are consistent in your support of freeloaders, corporate and union
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:28 pm:
Look at all those Republicans voting to spend that tax increase. Good for them.
- Rod - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:39 pm:
So Senator Lightford who voted for concurrence on SB 1947 says after the vote: “Vouchers are a national Republican effort and a last-minute add; hope it doesn’t take funds from public schools system.” That is a deep thought. Does she think it will add funds to public schools?
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:46 pm:
Michelle, politicians who vote against taxes but for more spending always get away with it.
It’s those who raise taxes and cut spending who usually take the beating. See Pat Quinn.
- SAP - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 3:52 pm:
The Catholic church came out in support for providing more money to the public schools while the Chicago public school teachers opposed it. You can’t make this stuff up.
- Huh? - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 6:21 pm:
Was there any talk of MOU’s being signed?
- Can'tWaitToLeave - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 6:33 pm:
And where was State Sen. Oberweis?
- Just Learning formerly newbie chic - Tuesday, Aug 29, 17 @ 6:53 pm:
I am thrilled this is over I am not fond of the tax credits but otherwise great. I have a family full of Teachers and grandkids in school. Thanks to all for teaching me so much.

I guess we now know who owns Biss, if there was any question before today.
