Rate the new Pritzker TV ad

Friday, Sep 8, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I saw this on TV last night and was impressed enough to ask for a copy from the campaign

* Script…

I’m Juliana Stratton and I’m so excited to be running for lieutenant governor and to be a part of JB Pritzker’s team.

About two years ago I remember sitting at home and watching the nightly news and I saw what Governor Rauner was doing and I really saw our state heading in the wrong direction and I decided to run for state representative.

I have seen JB in so many different contexts and he is the same. He’s the same in a one-on-one conversation. He’s the same when he’s before a group of people. He is sharing his heart a sense of economic investment and job creation his concern for making sure that children get the best start in ife

I believe that JB is the right person for this job. He has the ideas, he has the leadership capability and he has the values to really invest in our state and making sure we get on the right track.

B+, it doesn’t seem to offer anything new or particularly exciting, but my guess is that the ad was cut to educate people on the Stratton pick and woo over AAs in the primary race. It seems like it furthers that goal.

    Nice.

  3. - Arsenal - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:46 am:

As I’ve said before, I’m rubbish at rating ads, but I think the fact that Juliana is proving herself to be such an effective surrogate (when we’re getting real time demonstrations of how hard it is to pick a running mate) speaks well of Pritzker.

  4. - John Rawlsss - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:46 am:

    Terrible

  5. - Gruntled University Employee - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:47 am:

A solid A. A good positive piece with just enough dig at Rauner while answering the “why I’m running” question.

  6. - Northside Southerner - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:49 am:

Does better for Stratton than JB, overall good for both though.

  7. - Last Bull Moose - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:51 am:

    A. My wife and I saw it and really liked it.

  8. - Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 9:51 am:

A nice introduction. This is the type of ad that can be run anywhere in the state. I like it.

    Grade: A
    Stratton gets it.
First LG Rule: Don’t hurt the G.
Second LG Rule: Support the G, i.e. “be a part of JB’s team.”
Good forward momentum for Team Pritzker.

I like it. Mikey likes it to (see 70’s life cereal commercial, not Mike madigan)

I won’t lie. This gave me chills. I’m so proud. Democrats have good choices. It is a good feeling!

  12. - Anonish - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:00 am:

    A
It impressed someone I know who was put off by the size of the bus JB was using for his state tour.

  13. - So_Ill - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:03 am:

I saw it last night and and as soon as it was over, I rewound it and watched it again. Great ad.

    A

  14. - Slam dunk - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:08 am:

The exposure will turn her into a strong asset during the campaign. The sooner she becomes a household name the sooner she becomes a force.

  15. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:13 am:

I rate it a B+. The only problem I have with it is that Stratton looks down and to the side, as if she’s reading script. I believe people should not look like they’re reading when they’re doing ads.

I get a dig at Rauner’s working class, regular guy phoniness when she says Pritzker is the same in different settings. I like that part.

I wish a woman would run for governor, like Comptroller Mendoza. We need diversity in leadership to reflect who we are as Illinoisans, instead of white males all the time. Plus, Mendoza would be up in Rauner’s grill, fighting him, so it would be fun, campaign-wise.

Thus far, I am most impressed by the Pritzker campaign. I think it’s doing a terrific job and gets messaging.

  16. - Anonymous - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:14 am:

    Is she related to Bill???

=== … someone I know who was put off by the size of the bus JB was using for his state tour … ===

In today’s political environment, you have to have a big bus to throw people under.

To the post: I thought it was a good introductory piece. I’m seeing a positive trend out of good stuff out of this campaign crew. Keep it up

  18. - Northside City Dweller - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:20 am:

C+ Minute spots have to be really engaging for anyone to watch that long. When someone is speaking to camera you need to hold their attention. This fails at that. Pritzker’s ads haven’t been particularly good, they’re just bland, and this one is no different.

  19. - lake county democrat - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:37 am:

A-, simply to preserve the “knocked-me-over” value of an “A” grade.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 10:47 am:

    It’s a solid “A-”

It covers all the intro boxes to be checked, Stratton showcases why she has been the best choice, “so far”, for any candidate for the office of LG.

It’s embarrassing how grossly ill-prepared Ole Slip and Sue was when Stratton can show a clearly stronger grasp of statewide issues and a vision while being a partner with JB and not someone “looking to be hired”

Stratton is an asset and Pritzker’s Crew showcased her as such, unlike Slip and Sue who was missing in action the entire budgetary crisis, even failing to show up a press events.

What would’ve made it an “A”?

Just a tad lighter. Just a lil.

    Otherwise, great work.

  21. - Jimmy H - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 11:11 am:

JB doesn’t wear costumes… doesn’t drop g’s. Great concept, genuinely expressed by Juliana.

  22. - Arsenal - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 11:17 am:

==It’s embarrassing how grossly ill-prepared Ole Slip and Sue was when Stratton can show a clearly stronger grasp of statewide issues and a vision while being a partner with JB and not someone “looking to be hired”==

I’ll go one further and say that every running mate since 2010, with the exception of Tracy and Stratton, has actively detracted from their tickets. This system just isn’t working.

  23. - Arsenal - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 11:26 am:

Also, no one’s commenting on the subtle jab at Kennedy and Biss.

  24. - Amalia - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 12:24 pm:

Why is someone I don’t know selling me on JB for Governor? it introduces us to her and she seems fine enough, but I find it weird, having her laud JB. Of course, he picked you as his running mate. B

  25. - Santige - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 12:51 pm:

When you inherit $3.5 billion and get some slack on your property taxes, this is as good as anything else you can spend money on.

  26. - W Flag - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 12:52 pm:

Watching this commercial reminded me of the nominating convention in 1976. After Reagan addressed the convention (having lost to Ford), an observer remarked “We just nominated the wrong candidate.” That makes me think of how much better Juliana Stratton is on camera than J.B. She is more natural. He seems to be faking it. After he lost a Congressional bid, apart from writing checks to Blago, he essentially disappeared for years. Solid “A” for Stratton.

  27. - Ghost - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 1:22 pm:

A-. She needs more eye contact but the messaging is excellent and easy to follow. She has far bettter presence the. our current gov lite

  28. - siriusly - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 3:00 pm:

Rep. Juliana Stratton is probably the best candidate for IL Lt. Governor, ever.

  29. - walker - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 3:45 pm:

Just right for an introductory ad. Pleasant, positive, seems competent.

  30. - wordslinger - Friday, Sep 8, 17 @ 4:04 pm:

Great script, delivered like it’s spontaneous and unscripted. Not easy to do.

As Samuel Goldywn said: “The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that you’ve got it made.”

It’s an intro for Stratton, but she’s selling JB ( and dinging Rauner) very effectively.
