Misadventures in campaigning

* Kennedy campaign fundraising pitch…

Rich,

This past week, my dad was on WCPT 820 Progressive Talk Radio’s The Ben Joravsky Show. He told Ben that in order to fix gun violence, address poverty, and figure out school funding, Illinois deserves a governor who cares.

As governor, my dad will fix our broken government so that it does what government should do — which is to work for people, not against them.

Thank you,
Clare Kennedy

* The accompanying photo…

He’s definitely not the most photogenic Kennedy.

* Meanwhile, Daniel Biss has shut down access to his Dank Meme Stash…

* Biss’ Dank Meme Stash began as a group that encourged Biss supporters to share “dank” memes about their guy. However, once Biss dropped Carlos Ramirez-Rosa from his ticket, the meme stash turned on him…

* And people are sharing the fact that they can’t access the page. Here’s one of several…

…Adding…

* Looks like somebody is making lots and lots of campaign robocalls…

Whew.

* Press release

Gubernatorial Candidate Tio Hardiman Keynote Speaker for 9/11 Ceremony in Campaign, IL

Dear Members of the Media,

Gubernatorial Candidate Tio Hardiman has been invited by the American Legion Post 559 Commander to be the keynote speaker for the 9/11 Ceremony on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m at the American Legion, 704 N. Hickory St., in Campaign, IL .

One typo is a simple mistake. Two? Not so much. I do, however, think I’d like to live in a town called Campaign.

* And the “candidate” who no longer is?…

6,000 allegedly fake followers out out 10,200 is quite something, but I’m still kinda surprised that he has 4,200 “real” followers.

got a JB poll call this weekend. started with “I’m x and I’m from JB for gov” then straight up asked for whom I’d vote in Dem Prim giving a list that started with Biss. don’t know what else they would ask because when I answered undecided, they ended the call.

  2. - JohnnyPyleDriver - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:28 pm:

the meme stash got overrun with radical leftists calling for armed violence against cops and the government. I left for that reason. Not surprised they started screening

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood….

  4. - Almost the weekend - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:32 pm:

Somewhere the Daiber, Drury and Pawar Campaigns breath a sigh of relief, and quietly pat themselves on the back for not being included on this thread.

Now love to see the reaction from the other three campaigns just to see who they think Rich is backing now. It must be Drury!

  5. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:34 pm:

Tio and Alex are side notes to a campaign season that has interwoven and conflicting themes on the Dem side that should have the same goal of defeating Bruce Rauner and Raunerism.

    It’s Monday, Chirs Kennedy…

… Where o where is this running mate?

This is a serious question. Where is your number 2.

Truth be told, both Pritzker and Biss have solidified themselves with their picks and no matter the far left fallout and dismay, Biss’ second choice is far better than Biss’ first. It’s just a political fact.

If it is, indeed, in the field, Pritzker, two weeks ago or just before Labor Day getting a snapshot would’ve been a better window, and maybe more useful to make and take a measure. That said, they need to do something to get some momentum and reap some numbers from the ads.

  6. - TopHatMonocle - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:35 pm:

I laughed way too hard at the bike meme..

Would be more accurate if Brad Schneider pushed him off the bike though.

  7. - Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:37 pm:

This whole pre-primary season has stunk. I think I’ll just leave it at that.

  8. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:40 pm:

To be fair, I don’t think it was the Biss campaign that actually controlled the meme stash…

  9. - ILPundit - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:40 pm:

Look, Chris Kennedy is who he is, and looks how he looks. Suggesting his looks are a “misadventure” seems like a bit of a cheap shot IMHO.

There are plenty of fair shots to take on Kennedy, this isn’t one of them.

  10. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:40 pm:

Is there such a thing as a smile coach or therapist? If so, Kennedy needs to hire one asap.

  11. - VanillaMan - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:44 pm:

Now you know why so many people believe they can run a political campaign better than current professionals.

  12. - VanillaMan - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:47 pm:

Kennedy makes Dawn Clark-Netsch look like Jim Edgar.

  13. - AuH20 - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:49 pm:

As a member of the meme stash, it’s done a(nother) full 180 in the last few days.

Some people left after the Rosa flap, and now the stash is back in Unite the Left mode.

Lots of people blaming nefarious forces (JB, Madigan, Rauner - take your pick) for the Schneider un-endorsement. Which is about as silly as connecting a $1 million grant for a popular project in the middle of election season to a donation from J.B. Pritzker.

For a guy who (on paper) would be progressive in most states, JB sure has a lot of enemies on the Left.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:51 pm:

    Here’s a “think”

Kennedy is asking for cash at a time when he can’t circulate petitions, physically can’t legally, because Kemnedy is lacking a LG.

So, sending fundraising letters during a time that he is legally unable to circulate to get in the ballot while his opponents can and are circulating…

… at what point do you think, Kennedy Crew, you’re doing this right?

Why would I or anyone give you monies to run when the time to get on the ballot with signatures, with a running mate, you are unable to try to accomplish the first, and arguably the most important campaign task… get on the ballot.

Kennedy Crew, you’re doing it wrong.

  15. - Mr B. - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:52 pm:

Pritzker isn’t exactly eye-candy either. Pawar is even less handsome. Come to think about it, the Guv isn’t exactly stunning. However, a very good looking candidate is running against Lisa Madigan.

  16. - Blue dog dem - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:53 pm:

Whate the heck is dankameme? Couldnt find it in my Websters.

  17. - JohnnyPyleDriver - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:54 pm:

    dank = choicest
meme = funny internet pictures with captions

  18. - VanillaMan - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 1:56 pm:

    Hon C. Kennedy,
    Dear Sir,

My father was just home from the fair and brought home your picture. I am a little girl only eleven years old, but want you should be governor of Illinois very much so I hope you won’t think it bold of me to write to such a great man as you are. I have four brothers and part of them will vote for you any way and if you let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you. You would look a great deal better for your face. All the ladies like whiskers and they and their husbands would vote for you and then you would be governor.

    Good bye
    Grace Bedell

  19. - Crickets - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:00 pm:

Hey JB, the vendor you hired to do robo calls in far So. IL is hurting you down here. We get called every day and either there is no one on the line, or, when we press a key as instructed, nothing happens, just that robo-voice saying the instructions all over again. It’s frustrating and, with his name plastered on call ID, it’s not helping his reputation.

  20. - Kyle Hillman - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

I think it is worse noting, the “Daniel Biss’ Dank Meme Stash” group isn’t shut down. Looks like the admin closed the group to the public. Which is understandable.

Also I don’t even think the campaign is running it - the admin appears to be an intern for another Rep. who I don’t believe has endorsed yet.

  21. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:07 pm:

Just exiting the Cave of Caerbannog

  22. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:09 pm:

JB robocalls should stop. Too much too soon.
Chris Kennedy calls to find a running mate should increase in intensity…now. Biss already had two!

  23. - City Zen - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:15 pm:

“He told Ben that in order to fix gun violence, address poverty, and figure out school funding, Illinois deserves a governor who cares.”

No money needed? Fantastic. Kennedy for President!

  24. - G'Kar - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:19 pm:

To the picture: Kennedy thinks he is in Minnesota and is doing his best impersonation of Goldie Gopher!/s

  25. - Kyle Hillman - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:20 pm:

    *WORTH noting. (oops)

  26. - G'Kar - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:20 pm:

Ooops, I just realized I used a banned punctuation mark, so let’s try again.

To the picture: Kennedy mistakenly thinks he is in Minnesota and is doing his best impersonation of Goldie Gopher./s

Lincoln’s opponents were merciless when attacking his looks.

  28. - lake county democrat - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:24 pm:

(No, I’m not comparing him to Lincoln!)

  29. - Shytown - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:31 pm:

These are priceless Rich. Please keep the campaign follies coming. We’re going to need quite a few laughs throughout the course of this election cycle.

  30. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:35 pm:

==Lincoln’s opponents were merciless when attacking his looks.==

I think you’ll find the importance of TV has risen a little since Lincoln’s day.

  31. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:41 pm:

When Biss’ dank meme stash turns on him, it should raise some serious questions on the left, among them:

1.) Is the “Bernie Sanders model” really the future for winning elections nationwide and influencing progressive policies, or is it just a very imperfect step in that direction?

2.) Is the “Bernie Sanders voter” really the future of the electorate that will carry the movement to an ultimate national majority, or simply an under informed, loud bloc of voters with an outsized sense of ideological purity, not unlike a left wing tea party?

  32. - Miss Marie - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:51 pm:

Yeah, Biss’s campaign didn’t start that facebook page or run it. It looks like some college kid who was a big fan of Biss started it a bit ago and then it got overrun after the Lt. Gov mess.

  33. - Arsenal - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 2:54 pm:

==When Biss’ dank meme stash turns on him, it should raise some serious questions on the left, among them:==

Well, the Dank Meme Stash hasn’t turned on Biss en masse, just an indeterminate number of its posters. There’s still pro-Biss messages on there.

But it is true that this shows the limits of the kind of “cult of personality” that was a bit of a thread in Bernie’s campaign.

  34. - RosaWilly - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 3:07 pm:

JB has enough money to annoy people all over the state by September–major accomplishment!

  35. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 3:13 pm:

Rich, you are officially nominated as the journalist most adept at using “Understatement”. (Photogenic - Kennedy). Yikes, Chris. Be a different kind of politician, and do us all a favor: Don’t Smile .

  36. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 3:24 pm:

Chris Kennedy sure does a great Ed Grimley impression I must say

  37. - Belden Ave. - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 3:33 pm:

I think Biss (or any candidate) should worry about the “Dank Meme” crowd when the “dank meme” crowd starts doing something that may help their choice candidate win an election like knocking on doors, calling their friends to support their candidate or donating time or money.

  38. - anon - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 3:42 pm:

you should cover up the names of the people screenshotted from facebook—it’s common practice

  39. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:12 pm:

===I do, however, think I’d like to live in a town called Campaign.===

Thanks to Rauner the whole state could be renamed Campaign.

  40. - anon - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:15 pm:

Any Kennedy petitions on the street yet?

  41. - Arsenal - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:34 pm:

==Any Kennedy petitions on the street yet?==

    There literally can’t be.

  42. - TopHatMonocle - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:37 pm:

Kennedy has recently been cancelling public events, or at least one that I know of directly, and his field director recently left for another campaign. If he had a great Lt Gov lined up you’d think he’d be sprinting to announce it. Not a great sign.

  43. - Michael - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:44 pm:

    FYI-
The group wasn’t “overrun” by leftists. Most of the members who posted memes expressing disappointment in Biss were in the group before Rosa was on board. Isaac was a prolific poster for months, as was I. The Admins of the group themselves have all signaled disappointment with Biss’ recent decision:

“To address [the] comment about kicking people who are upset at the action to drop Rosa the mods FULLY sympathize and will allow a range of discourse on the topic.

Even if I ultimately vote for Biss, I still think actions need to be held accountable.”

  44. - Michael - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 4:49 pm:

Many long-time members have left the group or gone silent. Many have begun voicing their concern about Biss’ recent misstep. There seems to be a small minority left in the group who are committed to silencing and shaming any members who express disappointment or anger, without taking their concerns or the energy their cohort could have brought to the campaign seriously.

Some of them are saying things like this:
    https://imgur.com/Fgu1Jeo

  45. - wordslinger - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 5:48 pm:

    Robocalls are just rude.

I know they’re cheap, but I find it hard to believe they convert anyone. Maybe they work to fire up the true believers.

  46. - Scott Cross for President - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 8:27 pm:

On the heels of Trump’s ending of DACA and starting the clock on the deportations of thousands of Latinos in Illinois, the Mexican Independence Day Parade drew record numbers yesterday. Senator Durbin and Congressman Guiterrez were recognized as fighters for Dreamers and statewide and local elected officials and community leaders marched in support of Mexican-Americans.

And the only gubernatorial candidate to march ? JB.

Not Rauner, not Biss, not Kennedy, not Pawar. Only JB Pritzker.

    Duly noted.

  47. - cdog - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 9:27 pm:

I was going to write several sentences about how it’s not nice to say things about a person’s physical characteristics, but I decided I would not.

I think Kennedy looks very happy, and obviously enjoying the moment.

  48. - Teddy - Monday, Sep 11, 17 @ 11:43 pm:

Scott Cross for President, there have been marches were Biss was there and JB wasn’t. They can’t all go to all of them; they have crazy schedules planned weeks in advance. Come on.

You know what Biss has done? Co-sponsor the TRUST Act, which will do a lot more for immigrants than going to a march.

  49. - Flippy - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 9:14 am:

Geez, enough with the physical looks. Who cares? This is what we’ve become? I’m most interesting in hearing their plan to do the job they’re running for. I can’t be alone in thinking that.
