MWRD President Spyropoulos interested in AG
Tuesday, Sep 19, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * Metropolitan Water Reclamation District President Mariyana Spyropoulos is interested in running for attorney general, according to a person very close to her. I didn’t even know she was an attorney, but I didn’t need to be reminded that she’s got enough personal and family money to help self-fund a campaign. Her Greek-American name will definitely stand out on what might wind up being a long ballot. Anyone else?

well, she does know what moves the electorate. still recall her ad for MWRD that included choice information. Odd but stood out.

Especially considering the building she’d be working in.

I heard, possibly, Frank Avila, Jr.

There are a lot of folks in Worth Township that will happily work against her election.

Indeed. Also remember his writing from ND which would sink his ship if he sought a democratic nomination in any election ever

Does this person very close to Spyropoulos have the initials JJ?

Sure it’s just MWRD, but she’s run three countywide campaigns which aren’t a cakewalk. She’s the president of the board there and has done a good job. I would take her seriously if she jumps in. That being said it seems like a bit of a stretch, she would be a more natural choice for a Cook County office like Treasurer when Pappas leaves.

A sewage treatment plant! Think $1+Billion budget. https://www.mwrd.org/pv_obj_cache/pv_obj_id_4760DAE816371678AD4B235D3352E87B238E3800/filename/2017_Budget_In_Brief.pdf

I thought I was the only one! (Although I did get a call from an oppo researcher about it once asking if I had copies of the articles. I declined to participate in whatever their deal was.)

Frank Avila would be a great AG and a fighter for consumer rights and would be very entertaining.

Mariyana Spyropoulos is smart, hard working, can self finance, and has done a decent job at MWRD. She is not, at least so far, that exciting and is a bit of an unknown, but she has decent environmental and conservationist credentials and fiscal credentials at the MWRD. I don’t know much about her legal careers but heard she does drivers license reinstatements as one of her practice areas as a lawyer. She is smart and driven and could be a good AG.

Interesting. The ability to self fund will be huge in this race, especially with the Dems spending all of their money on keeping seats in the GA. She may be able to scare off some other potential candidates. She also doesn’t have the baggage that comes with being in Springfield for years. Also doesn’t hurt that she would be running as the president of a AAA bod rated agency…can’t be many of those in this State!
- How's it - Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 7:38 am:
When I lived in the city I used to see her hug billboards during election season. I thought to myself, why does this woman want this water reclamation job so badly? And what is water reclamation anyway? There’s no office of water reclamation in any other state.
I was so naive. Then a friend of mine explained it: “Don’t think ‘water reclamation,’ think ‘huge pile of taxpayer dollars that you can dole out to people whom you like.’”
Then it all made sense, and I understood Illinois politics.
- Who-dat - Wednesday, Sep 20, 17 @ 8:06 am:
Ummmmmm…..every state has several water reclamation or sanitary districts, including Illinois. MWRD is one of the largest (and best run) in the world.
And, seriously…is anyone REALLY a matchbox 20 fan?

I think that commissioner spiropoulos would be a good attorney general. I met her a couple times and the mwrd is probably the best run unit of government.
